S*M*A*S*H - Mau Mau Bar, Portobello Road 2 September 2005.
One day thousands will claim they were there!
"The veterans of Britpop", as they were referred to on the posters advertising the gig, treated the Mau Mau Bar audience to not one but two sets, the first featuring a number of new songs, including the never heard live before 'Beautiful Like Peace', & the second including all the old favourites plus some more new songs.
The Mau Mau Bar is a typical Notting Hill bar & it was good to see some old fans lounging around on comfy leather sofas, singing along & clapping hands, especially during new song 'Icon', encouraged by Ed in a style reminiscent of Romeo from The Magic Numbers! The stage was very small, so there was little room for Salv's usual scissor kicks, but this meant that he put all his efforts into singing & produced some excellent backing vocals, particularly during 'It's Got Me Heavy'. Ed said it was one of the best gigs he had ever played & he got an enthusiastic "not bad" from Rob, whose tequila-enhanced performance behind the drumkit was even better than normal! All in all it was a great night &, as Ed said, "one day thousands will claim they were there!!!"

Not really in a position to report much on the Mau Mau bar as I was only there for the soundcheck and the above number of minutes into the first set before being whisked back to KX for the usual torturous train ride back to WGC.
The boys were in fine form and I wish I could have stayed longer but duty called back in WGC. Looking forward to the next SMASH outing.

The 2 set thing is..... a quote from The Velvet Underground (either Live at Max's or 1969) I think Doug Yule drunkenly says "we could play 2 short sets or 1 long set....."
