Abdoujaparov - THURSDAY 5TH MAY 2005
TICKETS £8 (Box Office Cash Sales - Charges Apply To Other Sales)
Formed in 1998 following the demise of UK indie legends Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, Les (Fruitbat) Carter's current musical outing Abdoujaparov sees a return to punk/pop/rock roots mixed in with some sweet acoustic ballads.
The band is named after a famous professional cyclist from Uzbekistan. He was the only true punk rock cyclist, famous for running over a police officer on the Champs Elysees during the final stage of the Tour De France. Unfortunately he was forced to retire after testing positive for a banned substance and now races pigeons in Italy.
The last six years have seen a steady growth in popularity for the band both at home and overseas. There have been seven independently released EPs so far, and 2002 saw the release of the debut album Air Odeon Disco Pub. Now in its second pressing, the album continues to sell well. A new album is planned for autumn 2005.
In February this year, Abdoujaparov released a four track EP entitled "Ultra Cool". Recorded in London and Melbourne, the EP has received national radio play and is already a favourite on the indie dancefloors of London. 2005 is going to be a busy year on the road for Abdou, with live tour dates in Australian, the UK and mainland Europe.
Les is also currently working on a rock musical 'Tommi & Chris' which he is hoping to stage in the UK before the end of 2005. He has also contributed music to a new computer game and to a short film entitled 'A Working Class Zero Is Something To Be'.
