NEW ARTFUL RIOT - Camden Barfly, London
(20 Oct 2005) |
We tipped up to the Barfly on Thursday night.Having ascended the stairs we entered a world of heat, darkness and awesome noise.
Having had a hard day's housework behind me I retreated to the downstairs bar for a quieter lead up to the SMASH gig.
After taking a pew with Salv I noticed four girls giving a photoshoot on the benches. This turned out to be not the last I would see of them.
The girls were called 'The Fairies Band' and yes, they each sported fairy wings. They took the stage prior to SMASH and whilst they had what appeared to be quite a large (spotty male student) following they lost their credibility with me that not one of them played any form of instrument. The volume rose considerably with the girls shrieking into the mikes with a velocity that has not been heard since the end of limb amputation without anaesthetic.
The SMASH set had been delayed due to an extra band being added to the bill therefore time was tight. The boys blistered their way through 14 songs in what seemed a flash. Fast & Furious Rock & Roll Hot & Heady. Ace Banana guys. Old and new numbers sounding great alongside one another.
Following the set we descended to the downstairs bar again where the Fairies Band were 'treating' the punters to an impromptu disco floorshow on the benches following their 'triumphant' set.
The DJ could clearly not resist the temptation to play (drizzled with ironic aplomb ) 'Fit But You Know It' by The Streets. The Fairies went deliriously mad with misguided personal assurance that their looks were being bigged up.
Many thanks to Helen and the Boys for finding a seat for me on the SMASH Tour Ambulance on the journey back. The trains as usual were knocked out back to WGC.
