Stretch Princess
Self Titled
by Tony Brown
Review Date: 1/1/99

For those people who are into finding new bands, those people who are often heard to say "I saw them way before anybody ever heard of them," I've got just the band for you. Stretch Princess is a three-piece band from the UK that just may fit the bill. Singer/bass player Jo Lloyd, Guitarist James Wright, and percussionist Dave Magee combine to bring us a mostly unique, great sounding self titled debut CD.

Its not all roses on this one, so lets give ya the bad news first. The disc starts off on the wrong foot with a Veruca Salt sounding track that doesn't quite work called "OOOH." The songs "Twisted," and "Free" may have you wondering who put in The Sundays "Blind" CD in when you weren't looking. But patience pays off because it's all uphill from there. On the second track "Sorry" the band settles into a more comfortable, slower tempo. It's at this speed that the bands' abilities as songwriters and musicians become obvious. "Shoes " is a perfect tune for a mixed tape and the best track on the CD. It's a gorgeous song complete with a big hook and soaring vocals. The tracks "Heavy" and "Free" also fall into the gorgeous territory.

This CD reminds us that a very small percentage of good new music actually makes it to the radio, but here is your chance to be to say "I liked this band first."

I found out I won't be here from December 11, 1999, to January 13, 2000, I'm going on holiday in Vietnam. It is unlikely that this webpage will be updated, or that I can answer/read emails. So, please avoid me in that time period.

Also, I'm totally excited about dmoz.org which actually index your site through a category system much like Yahoo. Although Yahoo rarely, if ever, will list your site, you can become a Dmoz editor and help induct other websites (as well as your own). All the major search engines, like AOL, Alta Vista, Netscape, and Lycos, are using dmoz.

    Stretch Princess

    Wind Up

Stretch Princess has the chance to be really big. Their non-threatening girl rock sound fits right in the Natalie Imbruglia/Veruca Salt/Sundays generic vein. While there is nothing bad about their album, with its jaunty tunes and pleasant vocals, it's all fluff that doesn't stick to your ribs. From the uptempo first track "Oooh!" to the power ballad "Heavy," each previous song is forgotten by the middle of the next song. Lost in a blizzard of blandness. But someone out there is going to lap up this stuff -- teenage girls. The fact Stretch Princess has already had songs pop up on teeny bopper programs like Felicity and the teen girl fantasy movie She's All That showcases the band's intended audience.

    Stretch Princess
Though Power-pop trio Stretch Princess call New York their home, its members -- singer/bassist Jo Lloyd, drummer David Magee and guitarist James Wright -- hail from as far away as Australia, Ireland and England.

Vocalist/bassist Jo Lloyd met drummer David Magee and guitarist James Wright in London in 1996, while all three were honing their chops in various bands. Lloyd, a seasoned pianist and native of Ireland, was making rounds in several piano bars, while Magee and English-born, Australian-raised Wright, were busy making noise in heavier bands.

They began hitting clubs through England with just seven songs under their belt and later were picked up by several UK radio stations after contributing to Dedicated Records' Best Kept Secrets new band series.

Soon after, they inked a deal with Wind Up Entertainment and released their self-titled debut in 1998. An American tour followed.

there are some cool Stretch advertisements in a couple of magazine this month...one is in Seventeen ...its has only a tiny picture of the album ..and doesnt say anything about the band or the album on the page..but it does have a number you can call to listen to the album. the other ad is in YM [ Young Miss Magazine ] and its a really cool one. Its an ad for Sorry and it takes up about maybe a little less than 1/3 of the page. it has a big pic of the album and says "featuring the hit single Sorry from the movie teaching mrs tingle" or something like that.

    From Gavin Report

Success Is No "Stretch" Of the Imagination
    By Katie Zarling

Jo Lloyd is hanging out in her Los Angeles hotel room, where she and her band, Stretch Princess, are staying while shooting the video for "Sorry," their debut single. The song has just been selected as the lead track for Teaching Mrs. Tingle, the upcoming Miramax summer film-just part of the mass attention the record has received. As we talk on the phone, Lloyd keeps putting me on hold: "Sorry!" she says as she repeatedly answers the door. She comes back to the phone, breathless. "A big electric guitar just arrived," she says, elated. "See how rock 'n' roll this is?"

Rock n' roll indeed. Less than a year ago, Stretch Princess-then a little-known pop act from England-performed at Gavin on one of many stops of their national radio tour. They came equipped with acoustic guitar, a little hand-held drum, and Lloyd's beautiful voice. We were all very impressed.

The band traveled the width and breadth of America in this manner, performing virtually everywhere they could. "You're very vulnerable when you play like that," Lloyd recalls. "It teaches you a lot, and doing that stuff was the biggest confidence-raiser. People seemed to really like it, and I got braver." The band was recently signed to Wind-up Records.

Does she feel it's taken a long time to achieve success? "It's really funny. When it's your own music, you can love it and let it go," Lloyd says. "I like hard work and I want to feel that I've earned any success that we get." Then: "Oh, I've got to get the door again-sorry!" More gifts arrive. It's tough being a rock star. "I don't look like a rock star," Lloyd laughs. "These people are probably really looking at me. I've just woken up. I've still got my Tigger T-shirt on..."

Stretch Princess got together two and a half years ago in London when Lloyd handed drummer Dave Magee a demo tape. He was really into it and said he'd help Lloyd find a guitarist. Through the Melody Maker ad pages they found James Wright, an Australian who had just recently relocated to London to write music. "He came to the audition, and immediately, we all clicked," Lloyd recalls. "It was just a really good vibe and we sounded really good together."

They had a lot of interest from different record labels in England, but since they only had a few songs, they retreated to rehearsal space for eight months. "We rehearsed nearly every day," Lloyd remembers. "We did all these eight-track demos and just really, really focused." At the end of the rehearsal stint, Stretch Princess traveled to the U.S. for CMJ. It was there, as the story goes, that Alan at Wind-up got his hands on their demo tape and was so impressed that he said, "If they can stand up and hold their guitars, we'll sign them."

The rest is history. And judging from the band's recent success, you'll be hearing about them for a long time. "Music is always there and it's all I love doing, so I want this to be a career," Lloyd says. "I don't just want to have one song take off. I want people to buy the album and get into it. And then we'll make more albums."

Look, you can bid the debut CD from Stretch Princess for as little as $1.50: Ebay: Stretch Princess CD

Stretch Princess played four times in our country [ Europe ] last month [ March 1999 ]. Under the 'London Calling' flag, a flag that doesn't do justice to the name anymore (you know: Oasis rip-offs playing beat-music and looking like The Who or Blondie). Stretch Princess received good reviews.

David tells and his eyes are shining from happiness. His music has set him free. For how long? "At least four records, because that's how long our record deal lasts. And then we are really free, with millions of records sold with our name on it. Or we are free with a debt to Epic records. Nice thing to look forward to, isn't it."

This story is old, but it goes on: Vu normally sit and daydream at work. When he gets home, he likes to sit around and gather dust. His idea of an exciting night is going online, working on his various webpages, and optionally read a book before he goes to bed. Because Vu is only happy when he's sleeping. Then one day, something odd happened, he noticed a new receptionist at work. Abby was her name. Abby didn't look happy. Abby doesn't smile. Abby smokes a lot. She smokes a pack of Camel Red Light a day. Vu thought to himself, she's hoping for an early death. Abby started talking to Vu whenever he came in the office late at work, because he could never wake up in the morning. They had decided that they would be friends because they both had no friends. Abby lost all her friends in a freakish baking accident. Vu, well he hadn't lost any friends, he just never found them.

     August 11, 1999 Top 40 "Sorry"
News - A quick plug: go to the Stretch Princess Bulletin Board. Jo often post there under the name of jofesine. Here are explanations of the new version of "Sorry", from Jo, herself.
we had to record a "top 40" version of 'sorry',..we thought we could add something to the middle bit so we let james do a guitar solo,..i think that means he has two guitar solos now..!!..he's allowed one a year...it was mixed by Bob Clearmountain,i think that guy has a future,..amazing!...we have just started to get adds at top 40 radio,..and i'm not sure, but i think that 120 minutes will play the video for a while,..i don't really know,..i'll find out and tell you,..

i actually re-sang all the verses,..we did it in new york,..a lovely man called Steve Addabo helped us,..he worked on all Suzanne Vega's albums,...i can only play one song on guitar and it's,"the soldier and the queen"..(i think it's called that)!,..steve played it on the album and we sat together and i sang and he played,..it was a very big moment for me,..after we'd added stuff,..i'm sorry james,..after james' ethereal additions we went to another studio and did a live link to Bob Clearmountain in LA,..he played us his mix of it through specially trained phone lines,..so that's the version you hear on the video, and that is what all the lovely listeners at top 0 will hear,..

Someone told me that the chat will be featured on the official website, so you didn't totally miss out. Some things that were discussed are the song "Comets", the video to Sorry (for the film soundtrack), and the Blair Witch Project.

Note: The Sorry video is supposed to premiered on MTV's 120 Minutes (the alternative music program) this Sunday at midnight.

The first Video, "Sorry" is currently in post production (shot a few weeks ago in LA) and should be released very soon. The song's on the "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" Soundtrack, so I'm sure they want to coordinate the video with the movie promoation.

I've seen the rough cuts and can tell you it looks great and it's a fun video... just like Stretch! We'll let you know as soon as it's released.

The guitar pop of the English band STRETCH PRINCESS was catchy but nothing earth-shattering. The trio seemed as though it could use an additional guitarist to bolster its sound.

Gigs - Thanks to Tim Hensen for his reviews for Trax, Charlottesville, VA (May 6, 1999) and Mayo Island, Richmond, VA (May 8, 1999)
Both shows were amazing. They all seem to have a lot of fun on stage, despite the fact that the crowd was a little relaxed. Most of the people there came to see Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and there was more than a little bit of gray hair in the crowd. I asked Jo how they ended up on tour together and she said they share the same management.

Other observations: Jo is damn cute, funny, and more than a little chatty. Dave is very cool, and has to eat after every show. I think he had a bowl of lasagna in C'ville, and shortly after the Richmond set he ran off to the concession stand in search of a hot dog. And I didn't get to talk much with James. Might he be a bit quiet?

They [Stretch Princess] look like some label executive woke up convinced that the main thing the world is waiting for is a version of Eve 6 fronted by a woman with Aimee Mann's hair, and they sound like an extremely meticulous pop archivist has gone through the catalogs of 'til tuesday, Sarge, the Sundays, the Bangles, the Rose Chronicles, Grace Pool, the Cranberries, Veruca Salt, Emm Gryner, the Go-Go's, Paula Cole, Lush, the Primitives and Marry Me Jane, extracting only the purest moments of glossy melodic passion. There's probably something ghoulish about that, but I'm not about to spend a second trying to figure out what when I could be listening to this record instead.

Log Line: A kidnapped baby spurs Talon to get involved - exposing her to the police - which forces Draven to step in. Meanwhile a jittery Capshaw is back on the job, and Albrecht is asked to keep an eye on her.
Aimless and guilt-stricken, Hannah/Talon (Bobbie Phillips) has been wandering the streets of Port Columbia when her spirit crow leads her to a distraught mother, Nancy Meyers (Stellina Rusich), whose infant daughter has just been kidnapped. Hannah decides to intervene but her brutal methods for extracting information from anyone who may have been involved awakens interest in the police.Draven, unaware of the havoc Hannah is causing, and the trouble she is in, has gone to a special glade in the woods where he and Shelly spent time. Shelly appears and, not sure if it's real or not, Draven loses himself in the wonder of being together again. Capshaw is finally back on the job, but her nerve is gone. She was instrumental in getting Albrecht demoted but in an ironic twist, Vincennes asks him to keep an eye on her. He has his hands full though with two Crows on the loose. He plays back-up as Draven and Hannah rescue the child but Hannah takes off with the baby as a replacement for her dead child and it is up to Draven to try and put things right.

i made a mistake kids, kinda... but it wasnt my fault... im blaming david. i told you the wrong title to the new song.... apparently Dave wrote the set lists and put "sleeping in your kilt" just to be silly... the title, right now is "sleeping for days" which would explain why i thought i heard jo say "sleeping for david" or whatever... hehe but anyhow, just so ya know, it has nothing to do with kilts ;)
    Excerpt from Larren
That new song is very cool, I'll look forward to hearing it again sometime. After the show, we went out and hung out for awhile and then talked to the stretchies for a bit. good clean fun.. must do it again and again... this summer, whatever tour dates stretch has planned, i'm there ;)

    Delaware's Entertainment Paper (March 1999)

Stretch Princess' self-titled debut album is an intriguing collection of melodious acoustic pop and aggressive electric rock. At first listen they sound similar to Belly, but lead singer Jo Lloyd's voice is much more breezy and inviting than Belly's.

The album beings with the upbeat "Oooh!", which is basically a Veruca Salt song with better musicianship. "Shoes" the third track, is a soft serenade with fantastic dynamics. Again, Lloyd's voice take center stage putting the emotional stamp on the music.

"Nice Thing" is wistful, enabling it's subtle majesty to shine and proving Stretch Princess' diversity. "Heavy" is a perfect title for the morose aura this song contains. With a church choir ending it puts an exclamation point on a disc full of beautiful songs.

Stretch Princess is a band with outstanding arrangement, fronted by a Princess who sings like an angel.

       - Articles Thanks to Jon Vatner (again) for sending the article which was published in Harvard Independent (4th March 1999). The interview is edited, but does contain some comments from the writer:
Falling in the category of "Some people have heard their song, but nobody knows their name," Stretch Princess, with their self-titled debut, seem poised to leap into the category of "Everybody knows their song, but only some people know their name." Quite an accomplishment, considering that big sales these days are only open to the peach-pop of Britney Spears and the rap leviathan (which we Puritans can't seem to understand), not to a melodic rock band from the UK. The Indy recently met up with the exuberantly talkative lead singer and bassist, Jo Lloyd, as well as the some-what reserved Australian guitarist, James Wright, before their concert last Wednesday at the Paradise.

    ANNA LEE STRACHAN/Independent
They may be tired of their endless touring, but they put on a solid show, featuring a collection of their album's strongest songs. Jo's voice clearly couldn't match the likes of Celine Dion's power pipes, but her lyrics blended in well with the rest of the music. James had a blast, stomping around the stage with his guitar in between quick backup vocals. Dave Magee, the third member of the band, played like a maniac, removing his shirt after a few songs, to the delight of the swarm of girls in the audience. Stretch Princess captivated their audience with their music, but they could have found ways to rile up the audience to a greater degree.

James: Even when we get back to New York (Stretch Princess' US headquarters), and we think we're going to have a little bit of time off, it never happens, there's always stuff to do. We just shot a video in New York with a guy who's called Kevin Pearslade (Kevin Kerslake), who's done Nirvana and REM and people like that. So that was amazing, but it took up the week off, didn't it? Jo was up at like 4:30 in the morning, you know, finishing shooting at 8 o'clock, 9 o'clock at night.

Jo: And then stuff like, if we have days free, I'll go into our record company, and maybe just do stuff for the internet, you know, our website and stuff like that. There's always something to do. Or, we rehearse, or we write. We get busy, but we like it like that.

I: So have you written any new songs?

Jo: We have; we've got about 6 or 7 ideas; a couple are pretty much finished, aren't they?

    James: Yes, that's right.
