1999 - There Is No Time For Idle Dreaming In My Life

Pouring lovely and warm out of your stereo speakers, Sometime Never assert themselves from the opening brush strokes and delicately picked guitar lines of their debut full-length, "There is no time for idle dreaming in my life." Possible comparisons abound, as the love of such bands as The Cure, The Smiths, Sleeper, and Mojave 3 can be heard in singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Reynolds' quiet, personal songwriting. But not so easily pigeonholed are Sometime Never. From such disparate elements comes something new, vital, and much more than the sum of its parts. Electric guitar winds itself around acoustic based melodies that contradict the more common "pick on strings" acoustic sound. Not relegated to the background, the acoustic guitar is richly and warmly recorded and shares the spotlight with Reynolds' plaintive vocal melodies. The bass guitar is deep and resonant in its own right, and light brush and rod drum work underscore and complement the music without overpowering it.

Frustrated by the break ups of several past ventures, and wanting to put his own song ideas into reality, Chris Reynolds formed Sometime Never in the summer of 98 in Orem, Utah. Building on the ashes of those past groups, Reynolds recruited Joseph Heagany and Chris Allman for guitar and bass, respectively. Both had played with Reynolds in the short-lived This Dance. For drums, Chris Rediske from Limesix was enlisted. With the full lineup in place, the band began to practice Reynolds ever growing cache of songs. They played to critical acclaim in several local venues, and in late 1998, went into the studio to record their first release. The self-titled demo that resulted sold quite well, and they continued working on new material.

This album, "There is no time for idle dreaming in my life," is the hard earned result. From the quiet beauty of "a moment of silence," to the driving beat & haunting e-bow of "Desperation," this is a band on the verge of greatness. The engineering presence of Scott Wiley in the control room is evident in the warm precision of the album, and the songs flow through like a fully realized dream. Reynolds may not have time for idle dreaming, but you'll be glad you do, as repeat listenings reward you with the full scope of Sometime Never's beautifully realized vision. Sink in, pull on your headphones, & enjoy.
