Sleeper on KROQ

Part 1 (of 2)

Radio interview with Rodney.

Rodney: Introduce everybody to our listeners?
Louise: OK. There’s Jon here who plays guitar and Andy who’s the drummer and me, I’m Louise.

R: Right! And now the member of...
Andy: Diids out in the hall.
L: Diid’s yeah out in the hall ha ha.

R: You did a video today?
L: Yeah we’ve been making video all day for “Inbetweener.”

R: Where’d you shoot the video at?
L: We shot it at the Amassitor Hotel which I think is where erm...

R: Robert Kennedy...?
A & Jon: Yeah
L: ...got shot.
A: Joe Dimagio and Marilyn Monroe got a blind date...

R: Was there any Kennedy vibes in the room there?
A: The place’s fairly spooky, wasn’t it?
L: A bit spooky yeah...
A: A few ghost around I think.
L: It's a bit delerick around its a great place.

R: I want to congratuate... you guys did a great show and I like the stage set up. I like the way it said “Sleeper” y’know bands don’t do that anymore, but that was amazing... really cool.
L: Cheers
A:Thanks a lot. Thanks for introducing us.
L: Ha ha!

R:Real quick. Quick to the point. So anyway, how long have you been together?
L: I think we’ve been into two years now.

R:Whats the deal? Are you from Manchester?
L: ... No. ha ha ha!

R: Whats the truth? Where are you all from?
L: I’m from London.
J: I’m from Manchester.
A: I’m from Sheffield and Diid’s, our bass player, erm, from sort of...
J: Everywhere. Somalia and England, half and half, y’know...
L: Ha ha!

R: Wow. So how’d you like America so far?
L: It’s good.
J: It’s great.
A: It’s awesome.

R: You like L.A.? Of all the city which is the best city youve been to? Let us say L.A., ha ha ha.
A: Oh! L.A.!

L: L.A. was--
A: Easily the best!

R: Anyway, I’m going to play the first song you open the show with last night. This is “Twisted.”

R: I’m here in the studio with Sleeper and you guys are wide awake right?
L: No, we’re fully asleep.

R: Anyway right. Before Supergrass and I know theyre one of your favorite band right? You like Supergrass?
L: Yeah, they’re a really good band.

R: We heard your first single called “Alice in Vain,” when did that come out?
L: Erm, when did that come out? A year and a bit ago. Our very first-- only 1500 copies and...
R: Right. Before that we heard “Twisted,” the first song you open the show with. And so I’m going to ask you, who writes all your songs?
A: Jon and Louise.
L: I write the lyrics as well.

R: You got to meet one of your idols last night, Bert the drummer from Blondie.
A: That was pretty amazing. Its great.

R:What do you think of seeing good ol’ Clam.
A: Just looks the same as he always does.

R: So what do you think about Oasis don’t have a drummer now?
A: Yeah, apparently.
L: Is that true?
A: It’s hot news, isn’t it? There’s been a spade of drummers going...
L:I think the Stone Roses lost their a bit so Oasis thought we better do that as well...
A: We can do that as well!

R: What would you do if they ask you to join Oasis?
A: Erm, I think I have to turn them down.
L: Start drinking a bit more.
A:Yeah, I couldn’t keep up with them, really.

R: Someone called and wanted to know if you’ve heard of a place called Red Lion, in Manchester, its a pub I--
L: Yeah, I have yeah.

R: So what happened. You played with Belly, what happened to Superchunk?
A: Don’t know. Everybody tells us different things. They left or they didn’t leave or they were kicked out or they weren’t kicked out. Shame really ‘cos we wanted to see them. If theyd been on we’d been-- ergh.

R: So are [you] planning to coming back to Los Angeles again to do more shows?
L: Yeah! Were going to Europe. Tomorrow were flying to Madrid.

R: Madrid? Really? Wow.
A: Espanole.
L: We’re touring with the Boo Radleys for a month.

R: I love that new album. It’s so pop, it’s amaaazing!
L:They’re really good with pop. They’re great.

R: Who else have you been touring with?
L: We toured with Blur in Britain last year.
A: And the Manics.

R: What’s the story with the Manics? Have you heard from Richey?
A: No. He’s still completely disappeared. Its pretty sad really.

R: Where do you think he is? Hiding out?
A: Everyone sort fears the worst really.
J: Magazines in England have started doing like...
L: It’s become a Kurt thing, y’know so hopefully he’s hiding out somewhere and he’ll turn up in a few...
A: The Manics aren’t doing anything until they find him.

R: I know they have that one album out... That Jesus album. Well, anyway, let me play a song from the album, the albums out on Arista Records. How come you guys have Astronauts on the cover? Who are these astronauts? Why are there astronauts here?
A: They just are. I saw it in a book, in a space book. I was flipping through it. Just great front cover. If you look closely three of them are wearing their white, wearing their Dr. Martens and they’ve sprayed them white. Cos obviously they’re going into space and they need to spray them white.
L: They thought it would be the thing to protect their feet.

R: At least you got your picture inside.
L:We stay off the cover on this one y’know.

R: Im going to play a song called “Hunch.” Whats this about?
L: Its kind of when to be normal. Its love between ugly people.

R: Let’s hear a little of that “Hunch” there from Sleeper.
