Will Sleeper Ever Hit it Big in the US?

as observed by Jay McCabe

Hmm..., will Sleeper ever be a hot item in the states? First off, I should tell you that it makes no difference to me as to what kind of a splash they make here considering I have now located sufficient resources to buy all my Sleeper goodies, but it is a subject worth pondering. Pheraps you will ponder it with me (if not, turn the page).

Imagine coming home and turning on the T.V. to MTV and seeing a Metallica video, followed by a Spice Girls video, and then topped off with a couple of rap videos. Now at this point you’re pretty annoyed and are wondering why you continue to let your remote travel to this piece of crap station when the boisterous host introduces the next video byt he latest British sensation--- S L E E P E R! Hard to believe it, isn’t it?... hmm, yes, hard to believe but not unbelievable (see Blur). Actually, whilst on the subject let’s briefly discuss that. Now, whether Blur made an album strictly to gain American popularity is questionable but there is not question that they went through a major change in style that allowed them to grab the US fans.

Would Sleeper change their style for America? I for one, hope not and don’t think so [unless they just want to mess with our heads or something (Louise has been known to mess with a few heads)]. Besides, they’ve yet to hit number one in the UK. In either case, the big factor here is if they want it. After all, Louise has been quoted saying such varying things about the states as “it’s terrific” to “fuck America”.

Another issue is how would it’s fan following change? Their discs would surely be added in the collections alongside the likes of Pearl Jam and co. These fans- “teenyboppers”- would be the mainstream and the longtime “fans” who listened to them strictly for their underground quality would be out the door in a wink searching for the hottest indie sensation most likely not to make it big. Then of course there would be a couple of the remaining fans who would appreciate the videos, radio time, and print, and be happy for the bands’ new success. All of the fans would be treated with more extensive tour scene (now who could argue with that?!).

Well, in any case I’m not going to plan on this happening any time soon and if it were to happen I wouldn’t be too distraught over the whole situation. The only changes in my life may be that I catcha few shows and read a couple more articles. I’ll be cool with whatever the future holds for Sleeper so long as beautiful music remains to be part of it.
