Each year, Scoop photographer and internet DJ Mike Solof travels to a number of comic book conventions, including Comic-Con International: San Diego, to take pictures of the creators, publishers, retailers, fans, exhibitors, panelists and even the architecture at the show. In 2004, Solof started interviewing some of his subjects.

Scoop: What's your weirdest inspiration for a story?
GP: I was doing Crimson Plague and I had a certain idea of the power, like Aliens deadly blood and the model I was working with asked me what happens when she menstruates and the entire series took on a different tone from that point on.
Scoop: If you could change one word, one line, one moment, one story or one piece of artwork that you've done, what would that be?
GP: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the comic adaptation of the movie. I would have said no! Wipe that off the face of the earth.

Anyway, I just wanted to announce that I have two more convention appearances this year, so if any of you are going to Wizard World Los Angeles or Crescent City Con in New Orleans, please look me up. Next up, of course, is Megacon in Orlando, Florida. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there, especially my old pals, Gene Colan and George Pérez. Also looking forward to getting together with an even older friend, Roy Thomas who I haven't seen in years - we totally missed each other at San Diego last year (hard to imagine not finding someone in a crowd of a hundred thousand people) and it was Roy's first trip out here in ages.

JOHN MORROW: ...Eric, I think you recently had sort of an embarrassing moment working on your Modern Masters books.
ERIC NOLEN-WEATHINGTON: Yeah, you get a really bad feeling in your throat when you have to call up George Perez and say, "Remember that hour-and-a-half interview that we did last week? We have to do it again because the tape screwed up." Yeah, that's not good. But my favorite memory, probably, is-- When I first started working for TwoMorrows, I was working part-time for them and doing a full-time job otherwise. I had no idea what I'd be doing. I had never done that any kind of work in magazines or books before. And the first day I'm there, we get a package. We had just started work on Streetwise, and I get a package and I open it up and it's these gorgeous Nick Cardy pencils, and I'm like, "Okay, this is going to be a cool job!" So that sticks with me every time I have to sit there and spend three hours packing up books to ship out to you guys; I just think about that to get through the day.

Comic-Con veterans Jerry Beck, Mark Evanier, Butch Hartman, Fred Patten, Roland Poindexter, share their take on the annual convention in San Diego.
It was another colorful, crazy show time as fans of comics, sci-fi, fantasy and animation made the pilgrimage to Comic-Con International 2004, July 22- 25, 2004, the event drew a record 75,000, including entertainment industry types and press to the San Diego Convention Center.

Big news emanating from Teen Titans was that Japanese pop group Puffy AmiYumi, who sing the theme song for Titans, scored with their own series on Cartoon Network called Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi. Sam Register, svp in charge of original animation at Cartoon Network said the show will “be more Yellow Submarine than Josie and the Pussycats.” Carton Network also gave attendees a glimpse and chat with Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, created by Craig McCracken, and The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, created by Judd Wnick.

Jim Lee named CBLDF Defender of Liberty
Neil Gaiman presented Jim Lee with the CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund) Defender of Liberty award.
In his acceptance speech, Jim Lee said, "These are some very weighty words. My gut reaction is simply—I am not worthy -- not that I am trying to be falsely modest but because I take this award and its significance very seriously."
"Just look at the list of past recipients -- Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, George Perez, Brian Pulido, Chuck Rozanski -- it’s a rather all-star lineup."

July was Comicon Month in San Diego and, yes, we were there in force. It was Jewell Marceau's second year at the Con and the first for Lady Lily Gardner who portrayed my comic book character, RAYDA, of Femforce and was recognized as such by so many, many fans.
Hopeworks were with us at our booth, with exciting latex makeup prosthetics and doing makeup on the many costumed characters around. Sword & The Stone, a Burbank, California Company specializing in armor in all it's fetish aspects, had a booth next to ours and it was like DTT-VII all over again as many of the lovely Models we knew showed up.
Legendary Comic Book writer, artist George Perez signed work at our booth including videos that featured Jewell Marceau. He also brought along prints of his 'Prism' character drawn to show Jewell. He sold so much and much of what he made went to Comic Relief Foundation, a charity set up to help Comic Book artists and writers in need.

TEEN TITANS UPDATE

David Slack, producer of the Teen Titan animated series, dropped hints about upcoming episodes during the Warner Bros. Animation panel at Comic-Con International recently.
"In Season 3, look for a return of Slade in a really cool way that we're all happy with," said Slack, who appeared on stage with producer Glen Murakami and actors Ron Perlman (Slade), Tara Strong (Raven), Scott Menville (Robin) and Greg Cipes (Beast Boy).
"There's an arc centered around Cyborg and we see the apperance of a very popular villain from the comics, Brother Blood, who was a ton of fun to write. And in Season 4, we are telling a little story about Raven. And then there's the conclusion of the 'Judas Contract' story that will be airing soon, with Terra."

I spotted George Perez at the DC Booth early on in the convention, but he wasn't listed as a guest anywhere. When I arrived at the con Sunday at around 10:45am, I picked up the daily newsletter. I immediately saw George was scheduled to do a signing and sketching session at the ACTOR booth at 10am. As quickly as I could weave through the crowds, I found my way to the booth.... to see someone already had a 'last in line' sign. I wanted to fall to my knees in comic book fashion and wail: "Nooo!" But I have too much dignity for that. Really.
Regardless, it was a good opportunity to talk to George about his upcoming projects... and the Titans Graphic Novel, GAMES. George said he has a 6-page Avengers sequence to do, in conjunction with the relaunch of that book. He also mentioned an upcoming project - still under wraps - where he would be inking Jose Garcia Lopez. "That will be an education of a lifetime", George noted.
So what's up with GAMES? George believes it should be hitting stands in the last quarter of 2005, just in time for its 15th anniversary. Sixty-some pages are pencilled and inked from those years ago. Some pages are pencilled but not inked. And there are 40-plus pages that need to be pencilled from scratch. Al Vey inked the original 60 pages, but a different inker will be used for the remainder; Al Vey's inking style has changed too much in the last 15 years.

The DC Collected Editions Panel began with an introduction by Georg Brewer, DC's Vice President for design and retail product development. He was joined by Vice President for sales and marketing, Bob Wayne, and Senior Editor for collected editions, Dale Crain.
Due to the free-flowing nature of this panel, the question and answer session took up nearly the entire presentation. There was an open exchange of ideas, and often an informal "would you buy this?" poll taken by the panelists in attendance. Often, obscure titles were brought up, and surprisingly, Georg Brewer didn't discount the possibility of producing collected editions of various comics' series, be they obscure or groundbreaking.

Q: What about Justice League in the Decade format?
A: We're taking an approach to collecting different stories from different eras - as far as the best-of trade paperbacks and things along those lines.

Bandai is doing a wonderful job with all the Teen Titans toys. Guys, thank you again for all your wonderful words and the honest respect you've shown for the work George Perez and I put into the Titans comic so many years ago. The Bandai signing went extremely well. It was a real thrill not only to see adults in line, but also so many little kids who actually love what Sam, David, Glen and company are doing on the show. It's wonderful to see kids so into the Titans that they all have their favorites. Talk about massive ego-boos.
I did spend some time with Titans co-creator George Perez as he wandered the convention floor, and a little time with my Dracula co-conspirator Gene Colan and his lovely wife Adrienne at their table in artist's alley. The Florida weather seems to have been good to them.The convention was so big I never ran into Roy and Dann Thomas or many of the other friends I was hoping to see there.
