George is hotter than ever with his work on the awesome soldout JLA / Avengers crossover series. This piece was commissioned directly from Mr. Perez a few years ago at a con. For those of you who've never had the pleasure of meeting him, George Perez is one of the nicest, most friendly people you will ever meet in the comic industry. The art is on standard 11 x 17 comic art board. The piece was first done in blue line pencils and then inked (both by Perez). I think you'll agree that this is a piece that any Dawn or Perez fan would LOVE to have in their collection.

This was the 4th Comicon I had attended in the past 3 years and I believe George Perez was in attendance at all of them. However, for various reasons, he wasn't doing sketches when I was finally able to inquire about having one done. This has been a source of continuing disappointment for me as George Perez is my favorite penciler of all-time. Fate was with me this time, though. Due to the early, 10:00 a.m., start to the con, and because I had been allowed onto the floor even earlier, the line in front of Mr. Perez's table was only 5 people long when I passed by and he was already there talking to the fans. My initial plan to walk around the entire con and see who was there immediately got back-burnered as I sidled into the line for Mr. Perez.
Mr. Perez has a very well-deserved reputation as one of the nicest artists you can meet. He enjoys chatting with fans about all of the different books he's worked on and he's very personable. I was overjoyed when I got to the front of the line and saw that he was offering to do sketches with the proceeds to go to charity. Head sketches and full-length sketches were available with the price for full-length sketches being steep but since the proceeds were going to charity and since the chance to have Mr. Perez draw a sketch specifically for me might not come again, I opted for full-length and requested that he draw the Blue Bulleteer. I figured his classic style would really accentuate the elegance of the character. Since he was familiar with AC Comics but not with the Blue Bulleteer, I provided him with an image reference and told him that the character design is based on the Fox Comics' Phantom Lady as drawn by Matt Baker. He indicated that as far as he could remember it was the first time that he had drawn a "Femforce" character for a fan at a con and he said that he would likely complete the drawing that night after the con so that he could take more time on it. That was fine with me since I felt very lucky that George Perez would be taking a little bit more time to draw the Blue Bulleteer for me.

Crisis On Infinite Earths, New Teen Titans: Judas Contract, The Infinity Gauntlet and also gave me a copy of the
Millenium Edition of New Teen Titans#1 (which he also signed). He also said that he's halfway done with JLA/Avengers… can't wait for that one!

PITTSBURGH COMICON Apr 26- 28 My second convention of 2002 won't soon be forgotten. On the last day at about 2:00, there was a quick storm and the lights went out for the rest of the show! One guy was going through my paintings with a key chain flashlight! It was surreal. To make things worse, my shuttle bus was late and I had to run to my departing flight with my heavy bag. By the time I got to the gate I was tired, hungry, and sweaty--I must have looked like a nervous terrorist because just as I was about to board, security pulled me to the side and did a random check on me! Finally, I had to explain to them that I draw for Marvel comics (Luckily, I had Elektra copies in my bag). They were slightly impressed and sent me on my merry way. I was never so glad to get home. Not that this was a bad show, in fact it was very good and I thank Michael and Renee George for setting up my table. Anyway, my most memorable moment of the con was when George Perez (one of my childhood heroes) came to my table to tell me I'm doing a good job. You can't get much higher praise than that. Thanks, George. Also, special thanks go out to Frank Wright, who was kind enough to drive me to Kinko's for much needed supplies.

Pros
People- Quite a few people were at the show, despite the upcoming Wizard con. Many other guests said it was a lot slower than usual, and that may be true, but Artists Alley certainly saw traffic and this was definitely busier than the last Pittsburgh con. Yay for people.
Cool Guests- There was a pretty wide range of guests that were at this show so there was a pretty wide range of visitors. Big comic book names like Frank Cho and George Perez brought in comic art fans which was just fine with me. Of course, my big 'Con' for this show might illustrate that you can have too much variety in guests.
Cons
Greasy Guy from Mega Con '01 has competition. The torment lasted for half a day, but the fact that it happened is why I'm mad. If you talked to me on Saturday or Sunday, you heard about this. Read on.

LOOT FROM THE CON
PittCon is a terrific place to shop. Since I don't have to worry about packing for an airplane ride home, I can buy as much stuff as I want and just pack it in the back of the Jeep. Piece of cake. Alas, I picked up only a small stack of trades from the half-off and 40% off bins, and some pages of original art.
I added two sketches to the sketchbook. George Perez did the Black Canary piece I mentioned last week, and Michael Turned drew up an ice queen from FATHOM to fit in well with the snow/ice theme my sketchbook has developed. They're both beautiful pieces. I can't imagine being able to stand in long lines at any of the other cons to get them. My legs would have been numb long before then. The relatively small size of PittCon makes for easy access to the top names that attend.

When is the long-awaited crossover between The Avengers and The Justice League of America?
"At home right now," quipped artist George Pérez, who added that he has penciled 85 of JLA/Avengers' 150 total pages counting covers, and had inked 33 pages as of his appearance at the Pittsburgh Comicon in late April.
"I'm now going at a rate of about a page a day, and I hope to have all the penciling done by September so that, by the time I'm working at CrossGen, all that's left is the inking for the rest of the book," he said.
Even so, Pérez said he does not expect the first installment of the four-issue mini-series to be released for a year.
"What is ironic is that my first issue of my monthly CrossGen title may actually come out first, though I won't be starting it until October, just because we want to make sure I am well into the inking stages of the fourth issue before we schedule it," he said, "so the book will come out monthly." Pérez is on a leave of absence from CrossGen to work on the project.
Two individuals who have seen the pages said they are confident fans will approve of the final product, which is being written by Avengers writer Kurt Busiek.

The Harvey Awards presentation starts at 8 p.m., an hour after the con floor closes. While last year's fireworks came from Frank Miller's WIZARD-ripping speech, this year's CrossGen showing ought to be the focus of many interesting acceptance speeches and gags. CrossGen doesn't have an official presence at this con, so it'll be interesting to see if anyone flies up from Florida for it. (George Perez is scheduled as a guest, but if he'll be there in any capacity as an official CrossGen spokesman is anyone's guess.) Evan Dorkin is the host and Tony Millionaire is the keynote speaker.

Events: PITTSBURGH COMICON EXPANDS SPACE, EXTENDS HOURS
In answer to show growth, the ninth annual Pittsburgh Comicon, scheduled for April 26-28 at the Monroeville Expomart, 105 Mall Blvd., Monroeville, Pa.,
has extended its show hours and expanded the show floor. In addition, a
one-day Retailer Expo is scheduled for April 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show's guest of honor, Carmine Infantino, will be joined by fellow
creators Marty Nodell, Julius Schwartz, Irwin Hasen, George Tuska, and Al
Williamson. Other creators scheduled to appear include George Perez, Jill
Thompson, Brian Azzarello, Brian Michael Bendis, Joe Quesada, and David Mack.
Show hours are Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Sunday
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $15 per day or $35 for a three-day pass with
children under 8 admitted free.

I just wanted to clear up some info regarding my 2002 convention
appearances. Due to my heavy workload on JLA/AVENGERS (I'm pencilling the
second issue and am almost 1/3 through the inking of the first) I will be
doing only four conventions this year. They are:
MegaCon (Orlando, FL) in February,
Pittsburgh Comicon in April, Heroes Con
(Charlotte, NC) in June and Baltimore Comicon in October. Unfortunately, I
will not be attending either of the Wizard shows and will not be present in
San Diego this year.
I'll keep you up to date of any changes.
