PHOENIX (Jan 2007)

In a word: Impressive.

(excerpt)

Also, the Hero Initiative had amazing success with the art auction, guest lunch auctions, donation jars and 'opt in' donations for ticket sales raising in excess of $7,000.

George Perez was the main draw (as this was one of his last Con appearances before a long break, to focus on his new monthly book), and the bevy of other guests nothing to sneeze at: Mike Bullock; Len Wein; Mike Mignola; Jim McLauchlin: Mike Stackpole; Shannon Denton; Marat Michaels; Steve Rude; the very sweet Noel Neill; and several other people without Mike in their names.

Ok, so a couple of weeks ago was the Phoenix Comicon. As you may remember from back in September, I was on staff for last year's con. Well, this year, not so much. Which was AWESOME!!

(excerpt)

11:00 rolls around and they start the drawing. 7 people are called 6 people claim their place in line. They had one more slot to fill, so they call off the final number, and guess who's holding it in their hot little hand? Yeah, ME! W00t! So we fork over our $50 and are told by Brian Pulido to come back later today to retreive our sketch.

George Perez at Pink Raygun
TUCSON, AZ 2/14/07

Earlier this year, George Perez announced that he would only make three convention appearances between now and 2009. Pink Ragyun, the Webzine for Fangirls, was lucky enough to get some time with him at the Phoenix Comicon in January 2007, the first of his last three appearances.

The interview, titled "George Perez: Comics Romantic", will run as Pink Raygun's feature article on Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2007.

George Perez is the comic artist behind several landmark comic projects including the DC-Marvel crossover JLA/ Avengers, the 1987 reboot of the Wonder Woman franchise, and the 1980 revival of The New Teen Titans.

On his website, Mr. Perez states that he made the decision to limit his convention appearances due to his monthly commitment to drawing The Brave and The Bold for DC Comics. Mr. Perez also wants to devote more time to his wife of 25 years and her pursuits.

Pink Raygun is the webzine featuring news, reviews and interviews for fangirls. . . and boys. Pink Raygun is dedicated to providing women a smart and savvy, yet girly, place to discuss and read about science fiction, fantasy and horror in all of their forms, be it television, movies, books or comics.

It is highly unlikely you will see this anywhere else as most copies were bought up at the con by serious collectors. BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 (Feb 2007)

GEORGE PEREZ (Jan 2007), photo from Comics Continuum
George Perez is tackling his first monthly title in three years with DC Comics' The Brave and The Bold, which launches next month.

"It took me a few pages to get back into the monthly grind, but I'm having a great, great time," Perez said last weekend at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in Mesa, Ariz.

Perez reiterated that the title, written by Mark Waid, will not be a "Batman and..." book, although Batman and Green Lantern are featured in the first issue.

"I recently drew a cover that had Supergirl with a cycle chick outfit and on a spacecycle, dragging Lobo in tow," Perez said.

"I don't know about the plot of that issue because I do the covers in advance, but I love that Mark Waid is throwing me all these curveballs."

Perez said that a convention appearance in Pittsburgh in late April will be his last until 2009.

Big names like George Perez and Mike Mignola drew high numbers of fans without ever making things too hectic. "There's always been a line, but never one of those crazy lines," Mignola explained. "It's nice to stay busy, but not so busy you're fighting to get through a crowd. It's definitely a smaller convention than I'm used to doing, which is nice because you get to actually spend some time talking to the fans."

After a long two and a half days, the Phoenix Comicon is over and I can share the highlights. Or at least the sketches.

GORILLA JIMMY OLSEN (Jan 2007)
I had a few different things I was trying to accomplish. First, I had to get some sketches for my daughter. Normally, she would have been able to go with me herself, but we found out on Friday that she had strep throat. So, as she does for the out-of-town cons, she made a list of the things she would like to have in her sketchbook.

(excerpt)

But considering all the things he's drawn in his life, it's always exciting to hear George Perez say "I guarantee you I have never drawn this character before!"

George was particularly proud of the pun on the press pass.

Item! George Perez seems like a particularly joyful fellow. While we were waiting in line, he came out and signed autographs. He said (cheerfully) that if we had to stand outside in the cold (Arizona cold, mind you, so it was probably in the high 40s, but still - no fun to stand around in if you're not wearing a coat), he should come out and sign some stuff. I got nothing signed because I had only a book I was reading, and it wasn't written by George Perez. Three guys standing behind me in line had never heard of George Perez. They're going to a comic book convention and they've never heard of George Perez? Really?

Just realized I should probably mention that I'm going to be one of the comics guests along with my old buddies George Perez, Mike Mignola and Steve Rude (among others to be named later) at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon the last week of January, specifically January 27-28. I'll remind everyone when it gets closer to the date, but if you happen to be in that area that particular weekend, drop on by and say hi.

I'll be looking for you.
