MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2006 (19-21 May 2006)
On this weeks show I mostly go over all the happenings at the recent Motor City Comic Con, including George Perez, Jim Steranko, Adam West, my car accident, the RIAA, FBI and Leonardo DaVinci.

I also have some wonderful news regarding everyone's favorite cartoon sailor - Popeye and how you can own a Frank Miller autographed edition of Absolute Dark Knight for only $500.

I also have three audio excepts by George Perez from the Con talking about his new run of The Brave and The Bold and its future trade paperback, the upcoming Infinite Crisis Hardcover and Absolute Edition(?) (guess who asks that question?) and the state of Collected Editions in general.

I'm also giving away a copy of the Essential Captain America, but you have to listen to find out how to enter.

MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2006 (19-21 May 2006)

    IN THE ALLEY DOCUMENTARY (2007)
This past weekend, Rich and I did our thing in Novi at the Motor City Comic Con. I really had two goals at the Con this year. The first was to keep Rich and myself in front of people as we await the day of Paragon's (our new book through Sundragon Comics) arrival and to get footage for a documentary I'm doing called In the Alley. It will be a 15-20 minute documentary about the experience of being in the Artist Alley at comic cons.

As far as enjoyment goes, it was one our our best Motor City Con's ever. We sold Urban Mystics very well, had some great table neighbors, and I got some great interviews for the doc.

I spoke with people at their first convention and people who were old pros. I spoke with Vince Locke about seeing your work adapted into a film (he's the artist of A History of Violence). I got a great interview with George Perez about why he still comes to conventions and his impressions of what's changed over the three decades he's been in the industry. I also had a great talk with Martin Nodell, the creator of Green Lantern (and the Pilsbury Doughboy). He's a great guy and a regular in Novi. As he said (I'm paraphrasing), "It's all art. Whether you're Da Vinci or a comic book artist, it's all art. Don't let anyone tell you you're working in a lower class field."

MOTOR CITY COMIC CON: GEORGE PEREZ
    SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2006

MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2006 (19-21 May 2006)
NOVI, Michigan -- George Perez is just beginning work on the new The Brave and The Bold series from DC Comics, but he's already cast an eye on his next project.

"After my first year on the book, there might be a Legion of Super-Heroes story," Perez said Saturday at his panel at Motor City Comic Con. "That was my favorite comic as a kid. The editor is stumping to catch me a year down the line."

In other notes from the panel:

    * Perez said he has completed five pages on the first issue of The Brave and The Bold and that DC wouldn't solicit the book until three issues were completed.

"This is my first monthly title since CrossGen," Perez said. "It's a common misconception, but this is not a Batman and... title, although Batman is in the first issue."

Batman and Green Lantern will be featured in the first issue, with Green Lantern and Supergirl in the second.

"The first six issues are self-contiained with a good cliffhanger at the end," Perez said. "The first story arc will be A-listers because we want to go strong out of the gate."

Perez said he would be interested in drawing the Metal Men, Zatanna and the Sea Devils.

TALKING TO GEORGE PEREZ @ MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 06
    05-22-2006, 12:04 PM
    by Vaneta Rogers

    (excerpt)

    MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2006 (19-21 May 2006 )
NRAMA: Do artists get references to work with now?
George Perez: Well, sometimes when they send references, they send references of another person's interpretation where they've jumped a little far off the diving board, or they send you two references from two artists where there are contradictory elements. So there has to be someplace to start.

When I mentioned it to a fan, he suggested, and it was very smart, that characters who wear hoods -- what's their hair color? Those are things you should know.

There were things like when I drew Superman and the Golden Age Superman. The Golden Age Superman looks like he's wearing socks -- there's no heel, there's no seam to show that there's a flat to his boots, yet the current Superman does have a seam so he does actually have, like, a flatness to his boot. There's little things like that I've picked up. There's a slight variation in the insignia, of course, in the two Supermans, but even when I drew Superboy Prime, I noticed that Phil Jimenez drew his insignia and I made sure it was drawn that way. Little things just to give you cues.

    News: Pérez 2006 Convention Schedule
    November 21, 2005 11:36 pm
     From George Pérez

This is a list of the comics conventions I will be attending in 2006. Some are "rain-check" appearances for shows that I had to cancel in 2005 due to health reasons. In some cases this puts me in a position of attending some conventions on back-to-back weekends, but it couldn't be helped. I hope to be able to get together with a lot of my fans next year and will be warming up my autograph hand.
    February 24th - 26th: MegaCon, Orlando, FL
April 21st - 23rd: Pittsburgh Comicon, Monroeville, PA
April 28th - 30th: Paradise Toronto Comicon, Toronto, Canada
May 19th - 21st: Motor City Con, Novi, Michigan
June 30th - July 2nd: Heroes Con, Charlotte, NC
July 20th - 23rd: Comicon International, San Diego, CA
September 1st- 4th: Dragon Con, Atlanta, GA
September 9th - 10th: Baltimore Comic Con, Baltimore, MD
I will also be attending the October Portland, OR show for Second Genesis (another rain-check from 2005) but I still have no confirmed date.

That should keep me busy for the year in between issues of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD.
