    Long-Time Collector, First-Time Curator
    by Randy Martin

Besides his day job as a graphic designer, and his part-time gig as a sales rep for comic artists through Mighty Nib Original Comic Book Art, Randy Martin is also a long-time art collector. (Others refer to him as an "art groupie," and not without just cause.) Randy recently had the opportunity to bring his love for comic art to the public eye, in an exhibit at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center in Dunedin, Florida. This is his story.

    (excerpt)

We have a Neal Adams page and a nice Kerry Gammill page, thanks to the generosity of Ethan Roberts. Ethan also loaned us pages by Marshall Rogers, Alan Davis and Jim Lee. Collector Michael Lovitz provided art by George Perez, John Romita Jr. and Mark Bagley. Additional collectors' loans came from Kelvin Mao, Kurt Busiek, Ben Bressel, Pam and Doug Murry, and Benno Rothschild.

Artists who contributed their own work for display are Dan Brereton, John Cassaday, Adam Kubert, and Brian Stelfreeze, while Mark Waid, Mike Wieringo, Karl Kesel, and Paul Mounts contributed scripts and art for a process exhibit that features their work on the Fantastic Four.

    Entel Family Gallery
    Exhibition dates

    September 20, 2004 to January 7, 2005

The Comic Book Hero will examine the historic and cultural aspects of Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the X-Men in sequential art through essays, print examples and especially, original art panels from the most notable of comic book artists through the years. Movie imagery and artifacts will complete the timeline for each character or set of characters. An evolution of comic book art itself will be demonstrated, with an emphasis on writing, figure drawing, color, social commentary and character portrayal.

Through Oct. 17th – One gallery will feature original published comic book art for sale by contemporary industry artists and an illustrated step by step process of how comic books are penciled, inked, lettered and colored before production.
