This may be the comic book Mark Waid was born to write. All characters were written with more respect to their classic characterization than they usually receive elsewhere. Batman, especially, was the "Dark Night Detective" and not the brooding militaristic misanthrope he so often is mischaracterized as. Waid did the tradition of B&B's original writer, Bob Haney, proud here.

George Perez, if possible, has challenged himself to up his game on this series. Which seems impossible, but I swear some of his work here was the best he's ever done. What an amazing talent and an amazing comic book from cover to cover. Even when I look for something to criticize, I can't find it.

But I have say, even though I plan to keep up with the book because I really like the concept, this book was really pretty disapointing. To me sometimes Mark Waid's writing, in particular, his dialouge can start to come off very wooden, like I had that problem with his Flash run earlier in his career. I thought after reading Legion of Super-heroes that he had spiced things back up, but it's still very flat dialouge. Which...I mean...is certainly a part of the premise to this book, it's supposed to throw back to that sort of era, I understand that, but it doesn't really mean that in 2007 I really enjoy reading it, on top of given how often Waid ends up with dialouge like this, it seems kind of like a crutch.

Wanna know what happens next? So do I. I actually liked this quite a bit. Mark Waid shows his silver age DC upbringing here. He and artist George Perez obviously had a lot of fun doing this, and it shows up mostly in the fact that it was fun to read. Nothing groundbreaking, just one of those really fun reads, that makes you feel 10 years old again. It's a solid comic, with a solid story (albeit a tad corny what with all the gambling references), and solid artwork.
