Bringing back the spirit of the late-70's/early-80's requires an artistic touch from that era. I can think only of three artists of high enough caliber that would be the right choice for a book like this, and John Byrne has been off his game for more than a decade, so if not Jose Luis Garcia Lopez then who better but George Perez. Perez brings his detail-heavy, scenery-packed sequential art to life with the help of Bob Wiacek on inks and Tom Smith's eye-popping art. The book, for all it's today-ness, has the same wide-eyed comic-book gusto that it would have had were it presented 20, 30 or 40 years ago.
It's odd that something that should be so standard in the market feels like a breath of fresh air. So, if you're overwhelmed with political allegories, whiny mutants, war after war after war, and superhero deconstruction, then this is exactly what you want and pass it along to your 8-year-old when you're done.
