BREVOORT'S HISTORY OF COMICS
December 25, 2001
New Teen Titans #4 - February, 1981
By Tom Brevoort
It should have been a no-brainer. I liked the Teen Titans. I liked the writing of Marv Wolfman, who I thought was one of the best of the era. I really liked George Perez, who had penciled many of the earliest Marvel books I had read. But when NEW TEEN TITANS failed to show up at my usual comics outlets, I didn't bother to track it down.
Why? Because I hadn't liked the preview story that had run in DC COMICS PRESENTS #26 before the series premiered.
The only place in the area that was carrying NEW TEEN TITANS was a small card store in Israel Litwack's neck of the woods. And every month, he'd badger me about trying this new title, which he was really taken with. And I'd tell him that I read the preview and hadn't liked it.

So, where did the year go ?
Things have stayed pretty much the same here. These days I'm listening to the Lucksmiths, Belle & Sebastian, Le Tigre, Black Box Recorder, and Baxendale.
My brother got me a game for my Gameboy Advance and also this purple ribbon that reads "Nap Champ". I thought it was funny, especially since I'm such an insomniac.
So, happy New Year, yeah ?
When I spoke to you, you say 'I'll see you soon', but I won't see you for ages. And your voice sounded so small, the loneliness of the long distance phone call.

Like some of you, I have pre-ordered my CBM #87 because I thought it would logically contain some of the unfinished interview with George Pérez from their previous issue (#86). So, feeling gypped, I have emailed to Comic Book Marketplace asking where the rest of the interview is, but I have not yet gotten a reply from them.

[ News ] From MEGACON 2002 BROCHURE
SPECIAL GUESTS: GEORGE PEREZ
George first started in comics in 1973 as an assistant to Rich Buckler, working on a back-up story in Astonishing Tales #25. His first solo assignments came a year later when he penciled the story of "Sons of the Tiger" from the black and white magazine Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, and "Man-Wolf" from Creatures on the Loose. Within a year of those stories, he was offered regular assignments on Fantastic Four, the Inhumans, and the Avengers. George has worked steadily since that time. It was his work on these large-scale team books that garnered him the reputation as the artist that liked to draw group books. During his historic career, George has worked for every major publisher, as well as some minor ones. He is best known for his work on The New Teen Titans, a series that helped turn DC Comics around in the early 80s and was also the first mainstream title to offer a royalties program to its creators. He is also well known for his runs on Wonder Woman, Marvel Comics' Avengers series, and for the maxi-series that end all maxi series, Crisis on Infinite Earths. You can now see George's work on the CrossGen Comics title CrossGen Chronicles.

2002 PREVIEWS
JLA/AVENGERS
Almost 20 years in the making, can 2002's hottest projects live up to its hype?
Hype isn't quite the right word - try phenomenon.
During the past two decades, a lot has changed about the project - from the writers to the editors to how many issues the series would be. Everything's changed, that is, except for the involvement of artist George Pérez. While company squabbles between Marvel and DC have scuttled the project numerous times, Pérez never gave up on the project he was born to draw. Even when the first attempt at a JLA/Avengers one-shot was scrapped in 1983, for which Pérez penciled 21 pages of the monster crossover, the ultra-detailed-oriented artist didn't give up hope.
"This isn't just a big deal for fans, this is the project I've dreamed of doing for 20 years," Pérez stresses. "It broke my heart when they told me it wasn't going to happen the first time. When I got past page 21 this time, I actually took a break and finished off the Chronicles work I was doing for CrossGen so I could be totally committed to finishing Avengers/JLA."
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada made green-lighting the JLA/Avengers project one of his top priorities in 2001, and soon after Quesada took his post, Pérez was the first to step up and say he'd immediately sign on to the most highly anticipated comic project of all time.

Swordquest Airworld |
|
[ News ]
From George Pérez and
Scott Stilphen, via Pérez Yahoo Club
Scott Stilphen asks: AFAIK, only the first 3 comics (Earthworld, Fireworld, and Waterworld) of a 4-part series were ever released. Was any work started on the 4th? There are rumors that the story was written, and that it was even drawn (but not inked). Other people have tried contacting DC, but their archives are in some disarray and no one there seems very willing to search through it.
George Pérez replies:
Hi:
No, there was no "Airworld" story ever written or drawn. The whole SWORDQUEST project was terminated by Atari before we could even start on the art. Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway may have worked out some sort of plot synopsis dealing in the generalities of that final chapter for Atari approval, but it never got to plot form. As it was the third book "Waterworld" was released without a game cartridge, although I'm not sure how.
Take care,
GPz
Scott Stilphen:
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me about this.
Thanks for putting these rumors to rest
The game was produced, albeit in limited quantities (I have a copy myself).
Here is the entry for it at AtariAge, which has pictures and screenshots:

Thank you, Melinda, for sending the box of Huggy Bears for my birthday. I tried to pose with my only Huggy Bear CD, "Weapontry Listens to Love" and the box, but it didn't turn out so hot. So here instead is a lame pose.
Yes, that is a Hello Kitty mousepad.
Just a remind to check up on Ebay Item 1042621270, Item 1044220281 (note: this is only plate 7) and Item 1046402944 (Invisible Girl sketch). Also, Wizardword.com is temporarily unavailable [available as of 6:00am Monday].
This is just interesting, but have you noticed that the original Shi/Crimson Plague original Pérez piece is up on Ebay again? Apparently the reserve price originally was too high, see Item 1046972056. A good guess is half off of whatever they want is a total sell price. In this case, it's $600 (half of $1,200 for the buy price). This is just a guess, I wouldn't test out my theory if I were you.

I have mentioned this several time before, but I have been meaning to a second review on the PEREZ ARCHIVES. This isn't is full second review, but more to correct some views and mistakes I have expressed here. I want to say that the review of 6 Sept 2001 was based on first impressions of the book, but having used it to reference on every back issue I've inducted onto my checklist since October, I have to say that this book is a MUST for all Pérez collectors. I have to stress that this is an invaluable reference tool for anything related to Pérez.
I mentioned this statement earlier, "Is it worth it? No, not really.", this is referring to the deluxe version only containing an additional 34 pages, but costing twice as much. I just wanted to make this clear: that the book is totally worth it, but I still stand by my recommendation that buyers should stay with the less expensive version, as $25 for an additional 34 pages just doesn't justify the cost. I don't know why I am even discussing this as I'm not even sure you can still buy a copy, but please contact Andy Mangels or CBLDF to see if a copy is still available to buy. You are always welcome to write in regards to contributing to the new version of THE PEREZ ARCHIVES, as artwork is always need.
In the first review, I mentioned that the commission piece from Michael Gowcharan, was not thanked or credited, was only half-true. The truth was that his piece did not come directly from him, but from other contributors. There were several attempts to contact Michael, but proved fruitless. I'm sorry I have not mentioned this earlier, I have had this sitting around for a while, but have not had the time to commit this to written form. This is just out of sheer laziness on my part, again, apologies to Andy Mangels.
There is another matter of the previously unknown Perez Archives #1 (hardcover). I have attached the following official statement to the book information: "This is a privately bound volume which is being distributed to those few people who have provided a substantial amount of artwork (in excess of 50 pages) or rare material to Andy Mangels' archives of Perez material. It is not available for sale, though at some point, a copy MAY be auctioned for charity." There were only 15 copies of the hardcover version.
I hope this post clear up a few things. And again, just wanted to thank Andy Mangels for a great publication. I know he worked very hard to get the book out in a timely manner, and did a wonderful job helping a cause like the Comics Legal Defense Fund. We are all anxiously waiting for the new updated sequel.
Side note: regular and irregular vistors to this site knows that this is an on-going developing website. It's not, by any means, a complete site as things are always added and amended. All opinions expressed here are owned by their respective writers, this particular article is owned by me :). If you have a different opinion, agreement, or corrections, I would like to hear from you, my email address is as always listed on the bottom of this page.

I picked up this piece off of eBay earlier this year. The first and only place that I'd seen this piece was back around 1982 when it appear in the Lone Star Express along with an interview with George.
George had done an instore appearance and I guess he did this piece at this time which was when the fans new that Dick Grayson had quit being Robin but hadn't yet become Nightwing.
I thought at the time that this might have been Dick's new costume.
And then, nearly 20 years later, there it was on eBay and I had to have it.

Yay, I now have the Bad Taste (Limited Edition). For those who aren't familiar with this film, it is the debut film from Peter Jackson (although this was his 12th film, none of his other 11 film was released commercially). This film is just plain gross, but not nearly as bad as Jackson's third movie, "Brain Dead" (aka "Dead-Alive"), which is the grossiest (and funniest!) film I've ever seen. "Bad Taste" for a long time wasn't available to the general public (although some local video store had the good taste to rent "Bad Taste").
I've seen original out of print VHS copies of the movie being sold for as much as $75, so seeing it on DVD format is such a steal at $24.99. Jackson, as you know, is directing the much-anticipated "Lord of the Rings" movies.
I bought the Li Mu Bai toy the other day (from the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). This figure is really poseable and looks great overall. The incredible attention to detail is amazing. If you are going to get the figure, make sure to get the version with the stand.
Some interesting links you should check out: If you have Windoze 9x and want a WinXP icons, then you might want to head over to WinXP Theme. I am currently stalking Celeste and Lipglossy. I'm STILL playing Arcanum, I try and read up on the latest RPG at RPG Vault. Perez Gallery was last updated 2 December 2001. Titans Tower last updated 29 November 2001 (Xmas message).

Hi, everyone a little update on the GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER #2, I just came from George's yesterday, he signed all the limited editions, plus a few of the regular edition, this is just something special for the the contributors of the issue. Just to clear up what the print runs is, I guess I wasn't really clear, the regular edition had a print run of 1750 (1660 went to Diamond, leaving me 90 copies to sell and for the contributors), the limited edition has a print run of 250, only available from me, different cover colored by Tom (Avengers) Smith, no logo, it's awesome!!!!!!! You get a free color bonus print colored by Marcus Mebes when you order the limited edition, it's awesome too. Don't wait on ordering copies, because I've already got several e-mails from people that bought issue two off the stand, that didn't get the first issue, wanting to order limited edition and the first issue. So if you enjoyed the first issue, I wouldn't wait to long to get your order in, before it's too late. Talking with George we already have a good plan for issue three, I'm guessing will be 100 page issue. All prices include postage:

I am told there was more than 90 printed of the regular edition of GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER #2 (Diamond Edition).
From a previous
news article Tony stated that he got 90 copies from the printer, the rest of the print run is more than that. A good guess is the print run is either 1,000 or 1,500 copies. Issue one had a print run of 500 copies. Thanks to Marcus Mebes for correction.

As mentioned earlier, GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER #2 (Diamond Edition) is in stores today. The GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER #2 (Limited Edition) will probably be shipped in a week or two. The reason ? George Pérez is autographing all 250 copies. Marcus Mebes said that they will be autographed next Wednesday, and will likely be mailed Thursday or Friday.
You should note that the Diamond Edition/Regular have a much smaller print run than the "Limited Edition". There are only 90 copies of the regular version [please see correction], which makes it the rarer of the two editions. For casual fans, you should contact Tony Lorenz and order yourself a copy of the Limited Edition, while for hardcore fans, you might want both version for your collection.
I haven't read everything yet, but from first impression, it is really impressive. If you're familiar to the first issue, the cover are in color and the interior are in black and white. Issue two features a squarebound format (similiar to Prestige Formats) and the covers have a thin plastic coating.
There are three interviews in this issue, George Pérez, Tom Smith, and Kurt Busiek. The Busiek interview mostly focused on his work, including his upcoming POWER COMPANY. Smith's interview mostly is about coloring, although it's interesting to note that Smith got into coloring because Neal Adams thought his art "sucked" but liked his coloring.
Excerpt from the interview with George Pérez:
TL: ...Now all we need is the never finished "GAMES" graphic novel to be completed. I can dream right?
GPz: And I'm afraid that now that GAMES dream is never going to be more than that. In addition to the presence of dead chracters like Jericho appearing, a major scene in the story took place on the World Trade Center towers. That pretty much ends the speculation for me.

TALKING TO MARK ALESSI ABOUT WAID, PETERSON and the FUTURE OF CG
Matt Brady
posted 11-20-2001 02:46 PM
(excerpt)
NRMA: A point of clarification then – when comparing Ron Marz to Mark. The press release stated that Mark was being freed up, among other things, so he could finish Empire. But doesn’t Ron have other commitments he’s finishing up without leaving the company? Is it a matter of personal preference, where the system works better for Ron than it does for Mark?
MA: That could be the case, but isn’t. When anyone joins us, they come to us with a list of current engagements that they’re involved in. For George Perez, it was JLA/Avengers, which we allowed him to get started on, and have given them a due date for completing agreements, and then he went to the project, and he’ll be back with us, and he wants to do his own book. With Chuck Dixon, there were some things that he had committed that he had to get done. For Ron Marz, there were a series of projects that he had agreed to do for Dark Horse, specifically, Star Wars-related projects. They were part of his original agreement, but were delayed by Dark Horse, timing wise, and I understand that there might even be one more outstanding. So, the projects that Ron’s actually working on were in his original agreement to be done.
...
NRMA: With the announced series penciled by George Perez – will he be writing that as well, or is it too early to say?
MA: I can assure you that he won’t be writing it. He’ll be penciling it. I don’t anticipate that we will ever be in a position where someone will pencil and write a title. But George’s viewpoint was that he enjoyed doing Chronicles, because he got to whet his appetite in a few different areas, but he wants to start being associated with his own character or characters in the CrossGen Universe. At his request, we’re going to give him his own book, and we anticipate it will come out the first quarter of 2003, after he’s finished JLA/Avengers and has the time to do the front end work and get an issue or two ahead of schedule.

Heroes Third Printing? |
|
[ News ] From Joe Quesada (his website is unavailable at the moment), via Newsarama
OP/ED: QUESADA'S HOLIDAY EDITORIAL
(excerpt)
Okay, now that that's all said and done, here's the latest report on HEROES. As of yesterday it seems that we completely sold out of our second print run. We're looking into back orders to see if the number is significant enough to make a third printing worth doing. Fox News ran a wonderful piece today (Thanksgiving Day) on HEROES and it had some great segments with John Cassaday, Neal Adams and myself. I want to thank everyone who supported this project by purchasing it at their local shop. Keep your eyes open for Moment of Silence, it's really going to be another special book. Speaking of special books, I've been checking out some of the stuff from all the other tribute books on tap and it's truly inspiring stuff. Please make it a point to support these magnificent books as well, there are a lot of wonderful writers, artist, editors and publishers putting their heart and soul into these projects!
I've been getting tons of e-mail's concerning the art of HEROES and although the news is still vague it looks like the artwork is going to be auctioned off sometime in January. The live auction which is scheduled to take place at a very exclusive and prestigious club in NYC will have 20 or so choice pieces, the rest of the book will most likely be auctioned off simultaneously on Ebay, or so is the plan. More details as we learn 'em!”

Wizard Cover Being Sold |

[ News ] From Vu
As some of you may be aware, Spencer Beck is the art dealer and agent of George Pérez (see his website at The Artist's Choice). This is the guy you need to contact if you're interested in getting a special commission piece (from any of the artist on his website). Please note that George is busy with JLA/Avengers and the new CrossGen monthly in 2003.
Currently, Spencer is selling the cover to WIZARD #125 via Ebay auction:
Ebay Item 1039673577. Starting bid was a minimum of $750, so I am guessing Wizard Entertainment paid a handsome fee of $1,000 for one cover? This is only speculation, corrections, as always can be emailed to me and/or through the guestbook.

In 1998, I went to the Charlotte Heroes Comic Convention. George Perez was charging $100 for full-figure sketches and then donating the fees to the Charlotte Fire Department. That was very nice gesture; especially in a time years before 9-11-2001 when firemen were not the heroes they are considered now. I got this drawing at that show. This is a nice, full-figure drawing of Superman, pencilled and inked by Perez with an image of ~ 8 x 12", on a larger piece of sketch art paper. George signed the drawing in the lower right corner.

[ News ]
From George Pérez, via Avengers Messageboard (special thanks to Ilke Hincer)
I just wanted to clarify this matter. Yes, there was supposed to be a Cap/Superman cover as a third alternate cover for WIZARD #125, but WIZARD changed its mind and opted to save the cover for a later date, most likely closer to the release date of the JLA/AVENGERS mini-series. I myself think that it's a good idea. since I don't want the project over-promoted so early in the game.
Tom did do a beautiful job on the coloring and he's really outdoing himself on the inked pages he's already colored.
For everyone's info, I'm now on page 36 of Issue 1's pencils. I hope to be starting Issue 2 by the first week of December (if a plot is ready) and will be inking Issue 1 as I pencil Issue 2.

Juggling Schedules
[from Comics Scene Magazine #11, 1990]
Perez is now co-plotting The New Titans, plotting Wonder Woman and doing layouts for Action Comics. However, comics fandom hasn't seen the last of full Perez pencil art. He has a major work due out sometime in 1990: the long-awaited Titans graphic novel, Games.
"I'm working on it right now. I'm trying to produce four pages a week so I'll be done by the end of January," Perez reports. "They're being inked by Karl Kesel and colored by John Stracuzzi. There's no firm release date. There have been so many that have come and gone that I want to play this a little closer to the vest. That's my fault, nobody else's. By producing on a four-pages-a-week schedule, I'm not forcing somebody else to do their part in a hurry. Karl's not going to get 120 pages to ink all at once: 'You have two weeks!' " he laughs.

I just wanted to quickly mention that we broke a record yesterday for November 22nd, with 130 visitors to the site for that day.
I've never baked the turkey before yesterday, which is actually pretty easy. I used two boxes of stuffing and and put the bird in for like six hours on 300 degree heat. Pretty much that's all you have to do. Yes, the turkey was edible, and yes, it was very good.
All four of the grandparents are here, by the way. They've never been to America before, and certainly have never flown before. I am in awe that they are even here given that even some people here tend to miss their flights because of confusing ticketed information.
We're all have a good time watching them try out America food for the first time (they don't have cheese, milk, pasta, etc., in the old country). Microwave, 24 hour stores, and dvds, are unheard of!

History in the Making…
THE HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE TRADE PAPERBACK
In the wake of the universe-shattering events of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, the main creators of that company-changing event - writer Marv Wolfman and penciller George Pérez - were called upon to restructure and reorder the history of the DC Universe. Joined by inker Karl Kesel, they had the unbelievable task of unifying the decades-long accumulation of historical facts from multiple Earths into a cohesive whole for a new history of the single-universe DCU.
Now that project, THE HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE, returns in a new 104-page trade paperback edition - featuring an all-new painted wraparound cover by Alex Ross (KINGDOM COME)! Narrated by Harbinger (a central figure from CRISIS), THE HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE brings readers back through time and space to the dawn of creation, and continues to the end of recorded history - as Harbinger reveals "the history of heroism." Featuring an appearance by virtually every character in the DC Universe at that time (circa 1986), this unusual project (featuring a combination of beautiful art with prose) laid the foundation for all to come from the new DCU.
The CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS trade paperback - already in its second printing - has been an unanticipated sales phenomenon. And now THE HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE - with its first new printing in 13 years - is sure to capitalize on that success, at it makes the perfect sequel and bookshelf companion piece to CRISIS.
This project is supported with house ads.
THE HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE is a 104-page trade paperback arriving in comic-book stores February 20 with a cover price of $9.95 U.S.

9: EXTENDING THE OLIVE BRANCH
(excerpt)
The Justice League of America, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane.
"When I was a creator, I always used to ask myself, Why doesn't Marvel and try and make amends?'" says Quesada. "It's just takes some effort. There was a lot of damage done to these guys and sometimes it doesn't take much to try and repair it.
So far, the "Joe Quesada Goodwill Tour" has definitely made an impact. As one of his initial goals after taking over as EIC, Quesada made it his personal mission to make good with Marvel's rival, DC Comics, and get this termally stalled project off the ground. Sure, fans are excited about the highly anticipated super-crossover, but for people like George Pérez, who was scheduled to pencil the mini-series for two decades ago, it's been a dream that's long overdue.
"It's definitely a great feeling of closure," says Pérez, who will pencil the four part mini-series. "In a 27-year career, the biggest regret of my life was how politics and other events killed this fan dream project. It [is] a great feeling that after all this time I finally get to finish the dream."

CROSSGEN ILLUSTRATED was released today. There's no new material from George, and it's not really worth having in your Pérez collection - unless you want pages 2-3 of CROSSGEN CHRONICLES #3 in black and white (and again in color without word balloons).
It's very expensive ($24.95), but given that it's an art book with somewhat minimum text written by Barbara Kesel with lots of reprinted artwork (black & white version alongside a colored version) and printed heavy stock paper. But, if you're looking for your Pérez fix, you should just wait until the new CROSSGEN CHRONICLES #5 is released next week, otherwise leave this one on the shelf.
If anyone's interested, they can buy my copy as I don't really want it.
Random: some DVDs I bought recently includes "Dragon Inn" (US Special Edition), "Matrix Revisted", "Planet of the Apes" (2000), "Final Fantasty", "Shrek", and "The Silence of the Lambs" (Special Edition - not the Criterion Edition). I think I now have over 200 DVDs.

(please check out "related" at the bottom of this article.)
There's an article by Michael Doran on The History Of The DC Universe TPB (with accompanying Alex Ross cover art) over at
Newsarama
Here's the text of the article:
In 1986, DC Comics followed up their mega-event Crisis On Infinite Earths with a two-issue mini-series that attempted to restructure and reorder the now retroactively altered history of the DC Universe. Crisis’ main creators, Marv Wolfman and George Pérez (joined by inker Karl Kesel) were given the task of unifying the decades-long accumulation of historical facts from once multiple Earths universe into a cohesive whole for a new history of the single-universe DCU.
With the Crisis On Infinite Earths trade paperback now in its second printing, DC has decided to publish the first new printing of that series, The History Of The DC Universe, in 13 years.
The History Of The DC Universe is a 104-page trade paperback edition, featuring an all-new painted wraparound cover by Alex Ross. Narrated by Harbinger (a central figure from Crisis), according to DC, “The History Of The DC Universe brings readers back through time and space to the dawn of creation, and continues to the end of recorded history - as Harbinger reveals ‘the history of heroism.’ Featuring an appearance by virtually every character in the DC Universe at that time (circa 1986), this unusual project (featuring a combination of beautiful art with prose) laid the foundation for all to come from the new DCU.”
The new trade paperback ships in February and will retail for $9.95 U.S.

So sad. Flight 813 was supposed to land at 6.50pm, take off at 7.25pm and I was supposed to be on board for it to meet my connecting flight for San Jose at 10pm. So what happened ? Flight 813 was coming out of Atlanta. I don't know if anyone's heard what happened there, but they shut down the airport for about five hours. Of course I missed my connecting flight, but that was OK I thought, I could wait six hours for the next available flight in Salt Lake City.
When I found out my flight was cancelled altogether, I was so mad that I had requested a full refund and went home rather mad and bitter about Delta Airline.
I'm trying to think of the brighter side of things: that I'm saving heaps of money. But I am STILL not meeting with GPz. To make up for this, I am considering buying a Ninendo Gamecube or an Xbox, haha. Just kidding.
Just so you'll know, if I am away from my computer, I usually would update my site through my guestbook.

CROSSGEN ANNOUNCES CREATIVE SHIFTS, NEW CHUCK DIXON TITLE, MONTHLY GEORGE PÉREZ TITLE
November 14, 2001
(excerpt)
Mark Waid will be writing Ruse for at least the next several years, Chuck Dixon will write three titles, while George Pérez has announced he will get back to penciling a monthly book again as soon as he is finished with his JLA/Avengers project.
Another new title will herald the return of George Pérez to monthly comics. George’s health and vigor is greatly improved, and he has asked to draw a monthly title as soon as he is finished with JLA/Avengers. The title is tentatively scheduled for early 2003 to allow George to tackle all the preliminary designs and get at least several issues ahead of schedule.
...Pérez said that he can’t wait to start his new monthly title, and that instead of taking a breather after JLA/Avengers, he intends to dive right into his new title as soon as possible. In fact, George will be doing some of his preliminary work to break up any JLA/Avengers creative fatigue that he realizes will inevitably set in with such a single long-term project.
“Everyone who has come to CrossGen has taken such incredible chances, but I’ve always had somewhat of a safety net with regard to my career,” Pérez said. “I mean, CrossGen didn’t make me relocate, they had me doing a quarterly and they didn’t make me give up a dream project like JLA/Avengers in order to bring me on staff, so I want to come back after JLA/Avengers full throttle. I want to show my commitment and appreciation for all that CrossGen has done for me. I want to create my own touchstones within the CrossGen Universe and have my own characters to draw, as well. The events of September 11 got me thinking about things like my extended family at CrossGen, and how much they’ve given up to make a bold statement about their lives in this business. I felt very privileged to have a place in that family, but I didn’t feel like I had done as much as everyone else to earn that place, so it’s time for me to show my commitment. When I come back, watch out!”

KURT BUSIEK TO LEAVE AVENGERS
(excerpt)
Kurt Busiek announced late Tuesday night that he will be ending his four-year run as writer of Marvel's Avengers.
"This big Kang epic will be my swan song on the book, more or less," Busiek said. "We'll wrap it up, with a blowout finale and an epilogue issue, then do a single-issue story that I plotted some years ago as the coda to my run. That should take us up through about #55, and then I'll hand the reins over to the new guy.
"I'm not fired, I'm not going away mad -- nobody's angry at anyone, and I haven't run dry on the book. I just feel like it's time to wrap things up, take my bows and get off the stage before people get tired of me, and this Kang epic seems like a good high note to go out on.
"I've had a wonderful time. It's been great working with Tom Brevoort, who I think is one of the all-time best editors in comics. I've been thrilled to work with artists of the caliber of George Pérez, Carlos Pacheco and Alan Davis, and I'm currently having a great time working with Kieron Dwyer, who's doing a fantastic job.

Okay, so I am going to attend the SUPER CON 2001 in California on November 18th. I'm flying into San Jose on Friday, the 16th, and staying until Monday the 19th. So there won't be any update(s) until Tuesday. I am somewhat stressing out over the airplane that went down over in Queens, NY, but I know I shouldn't worry about my own flight.
As you may, or may not, know, this would be the first time I would meet George Pérez. I have been collecting and enjoying his published artworks since 1985 (for those who read the about me section).
Anyone who wants to meet up, please drop me a line. I am in somewhat in need of a ride to my friend's house after the convention, but I suspect I will just call for a taxi to take me there.
CDs I am currently listening to is Baxendale's "You Will Have Your Revenge" and Morrissey's "Best of Morrissey".
Sell your suit and tie and come and live with me.

DYNAMIC FORCES 'HEROES' SIGNED EDITION SELLS OUT
by Jonah Weiland, Executive Producer
Posted: November 7, 2001
(excerpt)
Only days after the signed edition HEROES was offered on the DF website, the tribute book - which has been generating massive media coverage - has completely sold out! Marvel and Dynamic Forces are planning a second signed edition with additional signatures on HEROES - tentatively entitled HEROES 2nd SIGNING - to help fill demand and raise even more money for the New York based charities! The first signing of HEROES #1 included the signatures of legendary artists and current greats including: Neal Adams, Tom Palmer, Joe Quesada, Jae Lee, John Cassaday, Evan Dorkin, John Stanisci, Robin Riggs and Adam Kubert!
Due to the sell through of this first signed edition, Dynamic Forces and Marvel feel that it is imperative for fans to be able to support this worthy cause! For those who missed out the first time and would like to get signed editions, DF has arranged with Marvel to acquire second printings of HEROES, and have them signed by some of the original artists who signed the first signed edition - including Joe Quesada, Jae Lee and Robin Riggs in addition to new signatures by Joe Kubert, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, Nelson, John Romita Sr. and as many other creators that can participate in this important second signing!

From Tony Lorenz, via Pérez Yahoo Club
THE GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER, talk to the printer today, Harold Buchholz, everything is going very well, no problems, he tells me that he should be getting the books by the 19th of this month. So I should receive the books (limited edition and some of the regular editions, probably the week later). Now this is where I need your help Perez fans. A lot of you that ordered first issue and have said that were going to order the limited edition have not. I'm sending two hundred tomorrow, but I still owe about $250.00 on top of that. Issue two is a lot more money than the first issue, 500 copies of the first compared to 2000 copies of the second. Another down side is Diamond gets 60% cut and I probably won't get paid by them until the beginning of January. So I have to pay the printer up front. One of the main reason for offering a limited edition, was to get some advance orders to help with printing cost. I'm going to have it paid off before the 19th, but any orders that I can get in would be very nice. Plus you don't want to wait until the last minute and miss out. I still have copies of number one and I will have a very limited number of copies of the regular edition of #2 and I'm still taking orders on the limited edition #2 (autographed, alternate cover colored by Tom (Avengers) Smith, bonus color print).
$6.50 each USA
$7.00 each Canada
$10.00 each US cash or paypal

CBM #86 Reviewed |

Do you think I'm too harsh on these reviews I do ? I guess I am, but these are first impressions I get when I get the latest George-related book. I've been meaning to write another more rounded review for the PEREZ ARCHIVES, but I have been lazy.
Anyroad, COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #86 will be released to the general public tomorrow, but thanks to Marcus Mebes I have an advance copy.
This is part ONE of a four part interview with George Pérez, by interviewer Bill Baker. Part one of the interview basically just focused on the AVENGERS and the various writers that worked with George (at one point Baker had no idea who wrote after Steve Englehart left the series). The artwork used in throughout the interview were just various covers of the AVENGERS, a little disappointing.
Part two of the interview will appear in COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #87, will focus more on the TEEN TITANS, CRISIS, and more.
