Ultimate Avengers - The Movie

In some of the most violent cartoon scenes I have ever seen, the Hulk goes bananas on his teammates, going for blows to the head, the knee, the throat. This is not kid stuff. Neither is the poignant story of the return of Captain America to a modern world, one in which he meets his former fiancee who is now elderly. Intelligent adults with a grasp of WWII will appreciate this storyline.
The voice acting is terrific. Extras include dubbing in Spanish (although there are no English dialouge subtitles), a "which Avenger are you?" quiz, and an interview with longtime Marvel Avengers illustrator George Perez and current writers. My only complaint is that the aliens were not developed well. They seemed like Saturday morning disposable monsters. Their ships were cool, though.

The best extra is probably the trivia subtitle track that pops up frequently with detailed background info. Hardcore Marvel fans and anyone who’s passed sixth grade history will probably know most of this stuff, but it’s still a nice resource. "Avengers Assemble!" may interest diehard comics fans with detailed commentary on the series from the creative staff, including longtime artist George Perez. Personally I wanted to hear more about the early years of the series and how the characters and art style changed over time. Then there’s a sad parade of fans’ video auditions for Marvel’s open casting call. Hilariously Marvel rejected all of them. There’s also a brief quiz that tells you which Avenger matches your personality. If you have to know it was Vision.

Ultimate Avengers the Movie is far better than any DTV has a right to be and is a must for Marvel fans. Anyone with a soft spot for superheroes should have a good time, even if puberty is well behind you. Although come on Marvel, 68 minutes is an infomercial. Tack on another half hour and it’d be a real classic. What number do I call to order the never-tear Hulk jeans again?

Onto the extras, and you'll be pleased to know that this seems to be aimed at the die hard comic book fans out there rather than the younger audience. There are some great interviews with Tom Brevoort, George Perez and Kurt Busiek who talk about the history of the 'Avengers' in "Avengers Assemble" on the disc. A great , detailed little featurette, interesting particularly if you're a fan of Marvel Comic Books.
...
All in all, THE ULTIMATE AVENGERS is a must for all you comic book fans out there, and I'd recommend the movie to those that aren't into them too. Kids will love the film too, although it must be said that there are a few darker areas in the plot, so parental guidance is suggested. An entertaining little movie. Bring on the next one Marvel.

Extras include an optional fact track, which pops up as text balloons over the action and helps in learning about the characters and the comics, and a 25-minute creative history of the Avengers. Industry stalwarts Tom Brevoort, George Perez, Kurt Busiek, Joe Quesada and Mark Millar add their comments to this history while Avengers comic-book art from the past 42 years whizzes around the screen.
A feature highlighting fans' own video auditions — as they vied to become the voices of the Avengers — are painfully humorous; some segments can be used to blackmail the participants if they ever run for public office.
Finally, owners popping the disc into a computer are asked a series of questions to determine which Avenger their personality most resembles in a slick desktop simulation.
Read all about it: Marvel Comics offers "The Ultimates: Volume 1, Super-Human" trade paperback ($12.99) compiling the first six issues of the brilliant, mature re-imagining of the Avengers in the 21st century.

Ultimate Avengers Animated DVD On its Way

ULTIMATE AVENGERS: THE MOVIE

Marvel Enterprises and Lions Gate's Family Home Entertainment, a division of Lions Gate Entertainment, have announced that the first title to be released through their recent made-for-DVD agreement will be The Avengers (TM). The first installment of the multi-picture home video deal, the animated feature will cast some of Marvel's most popular Super Heroes including Captain America(TM), The Hulk(TM), Iron Man(TM), and Thor(TM). Production on The Avengers home video release -- which will be based on the best-selling Marvel Comics series "The Ultimates" -- has already commenced. The animated feature will be distributed by Lions Gate Home Entertainment and available in stores in early 2006.
"The Avengers are a super hero team for the ages which combines many of Marvel's most popular and enduring characters into one cohesive unit," said David Maisel, President and COO, Marvel Studios. "They are a natural choice to launch Marvel into the fast growing made-for-DVD marketplace."
Glenn Ross, President, Lions Gate Family Home Entertainment, added, "Production on this new title marks the next chapter in our ongoing relationship with Marvel. We're excited to be able to bring high quality animation and compelling stories to a very rich cast of top Marvel characters that will satisfy both the hard core Marvel fan as well as a broader audience that is looking for great action hero entertainment."
Marvel and Lions Gate plan to develop, produce and distribute eight original animated made-for-DVD features based upon the extensive Marvel character library. Marvel is spearheading development and production with Lions Gate handling marketing and distribution. This agreement builds upon the existing theatrical relationship between Lions Gate and Marvel, under which Lions Gate released "The Punisher"(TM) to theatres earlier this year, starring Thomas Jane, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and John Travolta, and is currently developing theatrical film releases for Marvel's "Iron Fist"(TM) and "Black Widow"(TM) characters.
