DVD Review
Originally a group of DC's greatest sidekicks, the Teen Titans came into their own with George Perez's renderings in the 1980s. The successful blend of distinct characters, deep interpersonal issues, adolescent angst and strong villains catapulted the book to the top of DC's sales. The cartoon uses the staple characters, including the darkly introspective Raven (Tara Strong), shape-shifter Beast Boy (Greg Cipes), alien princess Starfire (Hynden Walch), jock turned superhero Cyborg (Khary Payton) and the group's leader, the hot-under-the-collar Robin (Scott Menville). Instead of New York, the Titans fight for the safety of a fictional West coast city, set in an alternate 1960s world. Their main nemesis is the mysterious Slade, whose identity is slowly revealed through these first few adventures.

I was just sent the first animated Teen Titans DVD (Thanks Anissa, thanks Todd). It'a a great package and there's even an interview with George Perez and me in there. Of course, despite talking about George throughout the approximately hour long interview, you almost never hear me refer to him on the DVD. It's all "I, I and I." Oh, well. But despite that and the fact that my voice sounds like Tiny Tim on helium, it's a great DVD. I love the show and what David and Glen have done with it. And speaking of the show, my next episode introducing Titans East should be coming up in early January. Look for it.

Teen Titans (2003+) on Kid's WB follows the adventures of younger superheroes of the DC universe - including Robin (voiced by Scott Menville), Beast Boy (Greg Cipes), Cyborg (Khary Payton), Starfire (Hynden Walch), and Raven (Tara Strong) - as they take on the villain Slade (Ron Perlman) and his henchmen from H.I.V.E. (the Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Extermination).
Unlike Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans is not part of the DC Comics animated continuity.
Generally full of youthful exuberance and wackiness (as compared to the rather more somber and staid Justice League Aventures of their adult conterparts), Teen Titans also has episodes with a "message," when Titans learn to deal with fear, obsessions, jealousy, anger, and other emotions and problems that young people deal with, as they grow and mature. Of course, the message rarely gets havy enough to drown out the fun. Combined with the classic Batman: TAS style of animation, which also works very well with Justice League Adventures, Teen Titans has held a strong position on Kids' WB.
Teen Titans is still finding its footing. Aug. 28 marked the official beginning of the third season with "Deception," though the series had shown only 26 episodes before that date. Tied in with, not one, but two comic-book titles - the classic Teen Titans series and the younger, more directly tied-in Teen Titans Go! - the show has a broadening audience, both young and old. Teen Titans: Divide and Conquer, which collects the first six episodes, is in store Sept. 28 on DVD and VHS.

EPISODE NOTES
I must say, I'm pretty happy with this DVD overall. The standard retail price is $19.99, but you should be able to find it on sale for about $14.99. For six episodes and some decent extras, that's fair. Hopefully, it will follow with a volume two containing the remainder of season one.
Packaging and Menu: The Packaging is the much-reviled snapper case. Supposedly, Warner Bros. is phasing out this package in the next year in favor of the hard plastic cases. The design in in keeping with the show's style guide. I would have preferred something more stylish, but it is marketed as a "kid's DVD/video."
Comic Creations: By far, the best thing about this DVD. I was expecting a 5 minute breezy fluff piece. But this extra clocks in at about 21 minutes - the length of an episode. It features commentary by Sam Register, Glen Murakami, David Slack and comic creators Marv Wolfman and George Perez. They talk about the comic book, the characters, and the look of the show. I've talked to each of these creators about the show, and this special still included some stuff I didn't know. It's very nicely done! It makes up for the fact that the DVD does not contain commentaries.
Puffy Ami Yumi Video: Great fun, Good extra. It's the extended music video of the theme song, inserting Puffy Ami Yumi into the Teen Titans world. Fun.
Find The Remote: An interactive game where you scroll through various items to find the remote -- which doesn't really reveal much. The game is strictly for kids.
Previews: Usual kind of stuff. Previews for "Teen Titans and Static Shock", "Codename Kids Next Store", "DC October releases for Batman, Superman and Justice League" and a brief preview of the upcoming "Puffy Ami Yumi" animated series.

Clicked on the pic you posted of Marv and George from the bonus section of the dvd and I noticed that the dvd lists them as the 'Teen Titans Comic Book Artist' and 'Teen Titans Comic Book Writer'. Now, while I haven't seen the dvd myself yet (I'm waiting for full season sets myself, I too dislike that type of packaging), it is kind of misleading to consumers. First, they were the 'creators' of the New Teen Titans (Raven, Cyborg, Starfire) and to me, should have been credited as such. Second, anyone who now goes out and looks to buy the comic might think they'll get a new one featuring Wolfman and Perez as the team. Go figure.

(Vu: This made me think about DC Comics' often confusing TEEN TITANS and TEEN TITANS GO! titles. The later is obviously intended for viewers of the television shows (young adults) and have caused problems when kids buy the more-adult regular series expecting the show version on comics.)

I went over to Suncoast and this DVD isn't even on their computer!
I ended up getting it at Best Buy for $14.99.
The DVD case is one of those clamp-packaging, which I'm not too fond of because they don't fit with the rest of my DVD collection!
Anyway, collected in this Volume 1 is the first six episodes of the Teen Titans. I am hoping WB to release a boxset of the first season soon, in the meantime, I guess we will be getting these individual discs.
George Pérez and Marv Wolfman does not provide commentaries, but are featured in the special bonus feature, "Comic Creations", along with David Slack, Sam Register, and Glen Murikami.
The other special feature is Puffy Ami Yumi's "Teen Titans Theme" - which features guest guitars by Guitar Wolf !!!
You can listen to George Pérez talking about the New Teen Titans in MP3 format on George Pérez Group under "Files". Sorry, you have to be a member to download the file, unless anyone out there want to volunteer their web host?

Editorial Reviews
The Cartoon Network and WBTV's fine adaptation of Marv Wolfman and George Perez's '80s-era DC Comics title Teen Titans comes to DVD in a fun and extras-laden single disc. The attractive, anime-influenced episodes that comprise Divide and Conquer are the first six episodes of the series' 2003 debut season: "Final Exam," "Sisters," "Divide and Conquer," "Forces of Nature," "The Sum of His Parts," and "Nevermore," each of which pit the Titans--former Batman sidekick Robin, Beast Boy (who in the comic renamed himself Changeling), Starfire, Cyborg, Terra, and Raven--against a horde of regular foes, including Slade (voiced by Ron Perlman), Trigon, and many others. True to their age, the Titans also have to deal with issues about maturity, confidence, and even a hint of romance between team members. WB's DVD includes input from Wolfman and Perez and a video for Puffy Ami Yumi's irresistible theme song. --Paul Gaita

At San Diego ComiCon, George Perez mentioned that he and Marv Wolfman recorded commentary for the upcoming TEEN TITANS animated DVD set for release in September.
