posted 07-20-2001 11:32 AM (excerpt) LOVITZ: That’s what we’re hoping and actually they’ve gotten great reorders on it. Week after week they’ve had strong reorders, it hasn’t really died down the way a normal comic would do because a lot of stores are just keeping it in stock in the section of the store where they have materials for creators. You might have blank drawing paper and next to the blank drawing paper is Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and the Trademark Copyright Book and I think that’s great. And I was thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to be able to twist George Perez’s arm to do the cover. That was a great thing for him to do and I’m such a big fan. He was very gracious in doing that for me. It’s lots of fun. All around I’m just thrilled with it, I’m pleased. I think it’s a great little tool.
Considered by many comic book professionals to be the single-most useful book to be published in years, the Trademark & Copyright Book is available again! Recommended for anyone with creative aspirations, this book explains in easy-to-follow comic book format the ins and outs of protecting your intellectual property from infringement. (STAR13281)
Michael L. Lovitz, 2001
The reason I mention it is that the comic will be sporting a brand- spanking new cover by Mr. Perez himself! The characters on the cover are the Taggers from Crimison Plague being attacked by a horde of blood-thirsty lawyers (not sure what statement George is trying to make with this...). Since it will have a relatively low print run, this may become one of those really tough to find examples of George's work. So walk (you shouldn't run - you might hurt yourself) to your nearest comic store and demand they order a copy of this new masterpiece. From Wizard
January 15, 2001 The Ultimate Legal Bible for the Comic Industry is on the way Sirius Entertainment, the innovative publisher of such titles as Akiko and Dawn, is set to publish The Trademark & Copyright Book, a guide that should prove indispensable to those working in all aspects of the comics industry. The book has been written and researched by Michael Lovitz, a working specialist in Trademark and Copyright Law who serves as an attorney for Sirius. ... The Trademark and Copyright Book will be published in comic book format with illustrations by the Fillbäch Bros. and a cover by George Perez. The concept derived from the style of the handouts distributed by Lovitz in his lecture program. "We had noticed that the printout was laid out like an actual comic book," says Bellis. "Michael had already created a comic book script. It was set up in a way that could be easily digested." The book will also be available in a limited edition, The Trademark & Copyright Book P.C. Workbook, which will include a Windows-compatible disk featuring important trademark and copyright rules and regulations, appendices, legal resources and templates. According to Horan, the information should drive home the need for all creators to take protect their work: "Everybody is responsible for these things themselves. That is really the most important message about copyright and trademark. When you put pen to paper, you have created a copyrighted work. What you do with it is your own choice, but its up to you to get educated on that. This book shows you how." Both the regular and limited editions of The Trademark & Copyright Book will be available in March. -- Jim Catapano From Fandom
