  • As much as I like my comic book store, the store owner doesn't like to take chances and order books or comics that might not sell.

In the case of the traveler's edition, I found out about them a little too late to advance order them via Diamond's Preview. I don't like the fact that it takes more than one full week for Diamond to send re-orders (and that is if they have them in stock) and I guess I rather just not wait for something that's already out.

So I was out shopping for other things yesterday when I saw that the Travelers were in a special display at Barnes and Noble. This display is different than the one I previously mentioned (April 6, 2003 | Site Update).

I picked up three travelers and will probably buy more in the future if I happen to see them for sale. They're cheap, considering that it's $9.95 and in color (the color part is an advantage to the smaller black & white mangas for the about the same price). Plus, they are readily available at any B & N.

Another bonus is that these pages are printed on glossy heavy stock paper, so much better than the recent THE NEW TEEN TITANS: THE TERROR OF TRIGON TP ($17.95) or NEW TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT TP (2003) ($19.95), which uses cheap, thin (almost transparent) newsprint paper. By the way, the two TT were not available at the B & N that I went to. DC Comics (and other publishers) really need to take a more agressive interest in the market outside of comic book stores.

  • CGE Traveler Display, from Bill Rosemann's CG Press Releases (4 Jun 03).
  • What was apparently dominant are Tokyopop, CrossGen Comics, and Dungeon & Dragons (which had their own section). I don't know if this is a reflection of what sells or what the store buys (or both).

Regardless, I like the new travelers, I hope these books bring more readers to an already dying comic book market. When I was a kid, I discovered them at grocery stores, so I hope that some kid out there discover these books at B & N.

  • TRY THE TRAVELERS!

Laptops, CD players, cell phones... in this age of evolving consumer products, smaller is better. Which is exactly what we were thinking when we developed the Traveler format. Measuring 8" by 5", these full-color graphic novels deliver a handy size at a nice price. In fact, Wizard magazine said, "The new CrossGen Travelers are simply amazing...they're the perfect size to stuff in a book bag or even a back pocket." And with a price of only $9.95--for 192 pages--they won't break your wallet either!

Yesterday MERIDIAN TRAVELER Vol. 2: GOING TO GROUND and MYSTIC TRAVELER Vol. 1: RITE OF PASSAGE hit the stage, while SCION TRAVELER Vol. 2: BLOOD FOR BLOOD and THE PATH TRAVELER Vol. 1: CRISIS OF FAITH will arrive on June 11th. And if your local retailer ordered the TRAVELER DISPLAY UNIT, you may also find RUSE TRAVELER Vol. 1: ENTER THE DETECTIVE and SOJOURN TRAVELER Vol. 1: FROM THE ASHES waiting for you right now!

So if you ever wanted to give a CrossGen series a try--or if you like big adventure for a small price--then try the Travelers!
