What Looks Good: February '06

MIKE: You know, I’ve gotta be honest here, I don’t think that I’ve ever read a single comic written by Paul Levitz yet. From what I’ve heard about his work, it sounds like he’s got a good handle on how to handle the DC Universe and from the things I’ve heard about this story in particular, I’m getting a lot of faith that he’ll do a bang up job on it. George Perez drawing anything in the DCU is always a treat for me. JLA/Avengers was nuts, his Infinite Crisis covers are terrific and this issue of JSA should turn out phenomenal. I can’t recall ever seeing any of the current JSA’ers done by Perez, so it should be neat. This sounds like a great creative team to give Johns a break, but still step it up a bit on the book.

Previewing JSA #82
12-02-2005 01:55 AM
DC has released more pages from February’s JSA #82 written by Paul Levitz with art by George Perez. While Levitz was fairly tight-lipped about what would be going on in the story when we spoke with him last month, the pages strongly at a little Earth-1/Earth-2 mixing…
And for those who need to know it all – that last panel in the last page, where Ma Hunkel notices that the writing in the notebook is shorthand, that’s what Perez was talking about when we spoke with him in September - he explained that with this issue, he would finally be collaborating on a comic with his wife, who knows shorthand, and will be providing the notations.
Click the above links for the two interviews (the Levitz interview contains additional preview pages), and the images below for larger versions.

PAUL LEVITZ on his RETURN TO WRITING THE JSA
posted 11-29-2005 01:49 PM
BY JENNIFER M. CONTINO
Paul Levitz may have a ton of stuff keeping him busy on the business side of things as President of DC Comics, but that doesn't mean he never gets the itch to write comics again. In fact, he's about to begin a six issue stint on JSA with superstar artists George Perez, Rags Morales and Luke Ross. We caught up with him for a few quick questions about his return to writing.
THE PULSE: With all your duties at DC as President, what interested you in writing comics again and where did you find the time?
PAUL LEVITZ: I've never stopped being interested in writing comics, and have always tried to find the time to squeeze a small project in here and there, but it's difficult to schedule. I'm not sure how I'm finding the time for this project, but with the kids older, better-batteries for laptops making writing while traveling easier, I'm hoping to make it work.
THE PULSE: What are your issues of JSA about? Which members of the team are featured?
PAUL LEVITZ: It's six issues - a one part tale with George Perez tied both to the end of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS and current events in INFINITE CRISIS and to some of my old JSA work, and then a five-parter with Rag Morales and Luke Ross, which focuses on the Gentleman Ghost. Luke Ross does a flashback story told in intercuts throughout, telling the origins of the Ghost in old England, and Rags Morales does the contemporary story of the JSA and the Ghost. So far I've touched on some old friends (Power Girl, Flash, Green Lantern, Wildcat, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), some newer additions to the mythos (Jakeem Thunder, Mr Terrific, Dr Mid-Nite) and Ma Hunkle, who is an old character never had the chance to use before, since Geoff came up with such a nice way of bringing her into the stories.

When a veteran comic book writer with hundreds of stories to his credit returns after a hiatus of more than a decade, it’s newsworthy.
When that same writer is also the man responsible for creating the Huntress and for developing Power Girl into a major character in the DCU, his return merits even more attention. But when that writer is also DC Comics’ President and Publisher, returning to a group of heroes with whom he was closely associated more than two decades ago, then it’s big news indeed!
Paul Levitz, who helmed the Justice Society’s All-Star Comics series in the 1970s in a series of team adventures that rank right alongside his Legion of Super-Heroes tales as some of the best books in his impressive résumé, is returning to the keyboard in early 2006 to once gain tackle the exploits of the Justice Society. This time, Levitz will be writing a six-issue run in JSA, where he’ll be joining a true all-star creative team that includes a pair of the most respected artists working in comics today: George Pérez and Rags Morales.

ASK THE EDITORS #21
October 24th, 2005
(excerpt)
I went straight to the source for all things Legion, our Publisher and former LEGION scribe Paul Levitz. Here he is...
"It's ADVENTURE COMICS #310... Mr. Mxyzptlk's descendant (though we don't know that until the end) kills off the whole team until made to say his name backwards, sending him back to the 5th dimension and undoing his magical deeds. First LSH I read, coverless in a barbershop in Barryville, NY, not that it matters... Reprinted in one of the ADVENTURE DIGEST issues in the late '70s, if memory serves, and in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ARCHIVES Volume 2."
Thanks Paul... and all of you should look out for Paul's return to the writer's chair in February's JSA #82 (with superstar artist George Pérez!)
