JSA #83
(Mar 2006) |
|
(1) INFINITE CRISIS
10/2005: Infinite Crisis #1 (of 7) -- 249,265 -- [268,458]
11/2005: Infinite Crisis #2 (of 7) -- 207,564 (-16.7%) -- [224,068]
12/2005: Infinite Crisis #3 (of 7) -- 188,853 (- 9.0%) -- [216,727]
01/2006: Infinite Crisis #4 (of 7) -- 182,633 (- 3.3%) -- [207,297]
02/2006: --
03/2006: Infinite Crisis #5 (of 7) -- 201,855 (+10.5%)
For the fifth time in a row, INFINITE CRISIS breaks the 200K barrier. Which means it's the most successful direct market title in at least nine years ("at least" because numbers before 1997 are hard to come by).
More significantly, first-month sales actually went up in March compared to issue #4, and all previous issues made the Top 300 chart again, selling between 3,651 (#1) and 8,139 (#4) copies, underscoring that the story is still generating demand.
INFINITE CRISIS is a home run for DC, obviously.
(36) JSA
02/2006: JSA #82 -- 54,234 (+ 8.3%)
03/2006: JSA #83 -- 51,991 (- 4.1%)
It's "One Year Later," but minus the artwork of George Pérez, who illustrated issue #82. As a result, sales take a step down. These are still great numbers, however, so it's safe to assume that the book's upcoming cancelation in July is not due to low sales, but because they have yet another relaunch waiting in the wings. How long can it be now before the trick gets old (again)?

No new issue of INFINITE CRISIS was released in February, but the book keeps showing significant re-order activity. Issues #1 to #4 sold an additional 3,469, 4,718, 15,030 and 16,525 copies, respectively.
Given that ICv2.com's estimates are always a wee bit on the low side, it's safe to say that issue #4 has broken the 200K barrier -- which may well make INFINITE CRISIS the first title since the mid-nineties to generate sales of more than 200,000 in the direct market with four consecutive issues. Needless to say, it's a big whopping success.

DC MONTH-TO-MONTH SALES: January 2006

BY MARC-OLIVER FRISCH
The "Infinite Crisis" crossover still purring like a kitten and the big "One Year Later" reboot just round the corner, January was, understandably, another very quiet month for DC Comics, in terms of new titles. The publisher's top-selling new title in January was the DAY OF VENGEANCE: INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL one-shot. Other than that, the limited series SGT. ROCK: THE PROPHECY and ELFQUEST: DISCOVERY debuted, along with the new Vertigo title THE EXTERMINATORS.
An overview of ICv2.com's statistics can be found here:

10/2005: Infinite Crisis #1 (of 7) -- 249,265 -- [261,365]
11/2005: Infinite Crisis #2 (of 7) -- 207,564 (-16.7%) -- [215,259]
12/2005: Infinite Crisis #3 (of 7) -- 188,853 (- 9.0%) -- [195,771]
01/2006: Infinite Crisis #4 (of 7) -- 182,633 (- 3.3%)
These numbers speak for themselves, really. Even though it keeps losing steam as a crossover in January, INFINITE CRISIS itself is tremendously successful for DC, particularly considering its $ 3.99 price tag, and sales are holding up relatively well.
The three previous issues also made the chart in January. selling another estimated 2,121 (issue #1), 3,818 (#2) and 6,918 (#3) copies.

I’m fully aware that it’s my own lack of familiarity with the DCU which has hampered my enjoyment of this latest issue, and if an event of the same magnitude and scope were to happen in the Marvel Universe, I’d likely be far more forgiving of any lack of concessions to new readers. Indeed, I’m looking forward to Marvel’s Civil War crossover later this year, and I’ll likely find it far easier to follow as a whole due to my affinity for Marvel comics. All I would say is that if any readers have been unsure of whether to try this Crisis out for themselves (and there must be, what, three of you) then be warned: either read up on the lead-up to this series extensively or give it a miss, as John’s isn’t writing a new-reader-friendly book here....

I do know that I’m hooked. I do know that Phil Jiminez, George Perez, and Ivan Reis are doing a phenomenal job of illustrating this powerful story. I also know that every issue so far in this series has been better than the next and all of the hype that led up to it was well worth it. I don’t know what direction DC will be taking after this series reaches its conclusion. It could be a better, brighter, more heroic place or a darker place than ever before. There are some who long for a return to simpler times for DC’s heroes, but I don’t know if these same fans will be around if that actually happens. All I know is that, whatever the outcome, I’m going to be there, sticking with this Crisis till the end.

The ending was unexpected, at least for me. A lot of fans have been speculating that the multiverse was returning, and I didn’t agree. I still don’t, and I believe that this is just part of the story. This series strikes me as a look at the past before moving forward, and reinstating the multiverse doesn’t seem the way to go if that is DC’s aim. Still, it made for a great cliffhanger ending, something Geoff Johns excels at.
In the end, I really liked this issue of Infinite Crisis. The story is moving along nicely and the fight between Superboy Prime and, well, everybody was just freaking awesome. The story continues to take unexpected turns, and I honestly can't say for sure what I think is going to happen next. The George Perez cover for the next issue promises a fight between the two Supermen, which has me pretty psyched. Geoff Johns and crew continue to deliver a fun series, and I can only hope that the next three issues will be just as good.

Q: Who are…?
A: The Brotherhood of Evil. Originally, the enemies of the Doom Patrol, they transferred their grudge over to the New Teen Titans in the Marv Wolfman/George Perez days, and since, have been a general pain in the ass all around the DCU. And yeah, judging from the talk about making Nightwing claw out his own heart and Monsieur Mallah (the gorilla) eating it, they’re a little…unstable.
Q: Who’s doing the Emperor from Star Wars thing on the dashboard?
A: Deathstroke, Slade Wilson. Yeah, Brain and Slade go way back.
Q: Why does Deathstroke have a mad-on for Nightwing?
A: The two have a long history, dating back to The New Teen Titans days, but more recently, Nightwing and Slade came to a truce of sorts, where, if Deathstroke kept the meta-powered villains out of town, Nightwing would train Slade’s daughter Rose (aka Ravager) to be a villain. Sneaky son of a gun that he is, Nightwing trained her to be a hero instead – she never noticed the lesson books had “Hero” crossed out and “Villain” written in.

WLG #141: Escape From The Real World!
Wednesday, January 18
By Michael A. Diaz
Now that you’ve had some time to think I want to hear from you and what is geeking you out the most about the coming year. Is it the resolution to Spider-Man: The Other, DC’s “One Year Later” event or the end of Infinite Crisis, the return of the Astonishing X-Men, Grant Morrison/Jim Lee relaunching Wildcats, or the conclusion of Planetary that is exciting you the most?
Whatever it is, I’d like to know about it, but for now, let’s see What Looks Good…
INFINITE CRISIS #4 $3.99 (Geoff Johns / Phil Jimenez)
I don’t know about you, but this book/event is shaping up to live up to all of the hype that has been surrounding it. I don’t want to say all that much about what happened last issue because I don’t want to give anything away (I mean, wow, who say THAT ending coming), but I am very eager to see what happens next. It’s obvious that some major plans have been put into motion and just like the original Crisis... this one is setting itself up to be quite a tragedy.
That’s why I like this book so much. A good tragedy is one where the villains are really just people with good intentions going about things in the wrong way.

Another period of waiting has ended, and Infinite Crisis #4 hits today, with major developments in the future of Bludhaven, Superboy (both Prime and DCU), revelations about Alex Luthor's plans, as well as perhaps, the fruition of his mission.
Perhaps.
DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio has stopped by again to take questions about Crisis, 52, One Year Later and more. As a word of warning to those for whom this is new...no, Dan's not going to give away story points, though he probably will tease incessantly...and yeah, he was probably smiling when he did it.
All right - enough intro. Let's get this baby rolling.
Newsarama: Just to start off, let’s talk time-frame again – by the end of issue #3, pretty much the entire DCU is embroiled in the Crisis, correct?
DD: At the end of issue three we have a clearer idea of what the ultimate threat to the DC Universe is and by the middle of issue four, there is a call to arms that gathers the largest assemblage of heroes in the series so far. It’s not until issue five that everyone is operating on a single timeline.

Bob Wayne, Greg Rucka, Dan DiDio and Joan Hilty were on the Infinite Crisis panel at Wizard World Chicago. Not a lot of new announcements were made, but the panelists did say that Ted Kord, Max Lord, Sue Dibny, and Barry Allen would not be making a return to the DCU after the Infinite Crisis.
RANDOM NOTES
The new 52 weekly series is directly spun out of events occurring in Infinite Crisis #4, which ships in March of 2006. There will be multiple teams on 52 to ensure that it's a continuous event and will come out on time.
DC announced that fan favorite artist George Perez will be drawing all the seven covers of Infinite Crisis.
There was cryptic news that Keith Giffen is working on a new series, but the publisher would not confirm what it was about or who was featured in the comic.
DCU continuity will be sustained after the Infinite Crisis.
These titles are unaffected by Infinite Crisis: Brave and the Bold, Plastic Man, the All Stars line, and Legion of Super-Heroes.
These characters are not coming back to the DCU: Ted Kord, Barry Allen, Maxwell Lord, or Sue Dibny.
When asked about a possible new Blue Beetle, the panelists said, "If there is a new Blue Beetle, it won't be Ted Kord."
Keep checking back with THE PULSE for more from Wizard World Chicago.

Donna Troy was one of the most beloved members of the DC Comics Teen Titans. Fans mourned her death in the "Graduation Day" mini-series and rejoiced when DC announced the four-issue "DC Special: Return of Donna Troy" mini-series by writer Phil Jimenez and artist Jose Garcia Lopez. However, when some readers picked up the first issue of the series they found it wasn't quite what they expected and some were left confused. CBR News chatted with Jimenez by phone last week for some clarification and background on the series and some hints on how it ties into the looming "Infinite Crisis."
(excerpt)
After the DC Universe settles down from the events of "Infinite Crisis," readers can expect appearances from Donna in a monthly DC book. "I think there's been some talk. The plan had always been that once she was reintroduced she would be placed in either the 'Titans' or 'The Outsiders.' I suspect it will be one of those books."
Jimenez has enjoyed crafting a story that reintroduces one of his favorite characters and places her at the forefront of the big events in the DC Universe. He urges readers who may be confused or have questions to stick with the book. The final two issues of "The Return of Donna Troy" should tie things together for them nicely. "I just hope readers remembers that it is a four-issue series," Jimenez said. "Just because everything wasn't explained in issue one doesn't mean it doesn't pan out over the other three issues."

The changes coming to the DC Universe following Infinite Crisis won’t be limited just to the characters. DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio has confirmed for Newsarama that, following the seven-issue Infinite Crisis miniseries, DC editorial will see a significant change as well.
In a brief chat with Newsarama Friday morning, DiDio initially explained some of the rationale behind the upcoming “One Year Later…” jump all the DCU titles will experience coming out of Infinite Crisis between February and March of 2006.
“We had an editorial meeting to talk through Crisis - how we’re going to handle it, how we’re going to coordinate it, and how we’re going to follow it,” DiDio said. “When the suggestion was made by editorial of maybe doing a leap ahead in storylines, it gave us an interesting hook that would really play nicely, because it would allow you to get back into your characters in their own individual stories again, without being made to feel that they’re all coming from the same place and the same time. With everything running as tightly as it will be in Crisis, the last thing we wanted to do was follow it by having all the series coming from the same exact place, and the same exact time, because that can get a little redundant. This allows for every series to have its own individual identity again, and allows us to get the balls back up in the air as quickly as possible and get right back into the heart of what makes each character special.”

The former Titan resurfaces with clues to 'Crisis'.
It's a brand-new dawn for Donna!
Originally Wonder Girl Donna Troy, seemingly killed in Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day mini-series but instead transported to a strange world, roars back to life in DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy. written by Phil Jimenez with art by Jose Luis Garcia and George Perez, the four issue mini also serves as the official prologue to October's Infinite Crisis mini-series (drawn by Jimenez and written by Geoff Jones).
"This series sets Donna Troy up as a major player in the Crisis itself," the writer says. "It also connects to the cosmic events of the Rann/Thanagar War and the Teen Titans and the Outsiders. We're using her background and history to explain why she's so pivotal to the DC Universe, and why she, more than anyone else, has to be in the role she's about to take on."
Plus August's issue #3 is girl-on-girl action when Donna tangles with current Wonder Girl Cassie Sandsmark!
