The George Perez Archives II Delayed Until 2004
According to Andy Mangels, The George Perez Archives II will be at least another short time in coming. "Once again, THE PEREZ ARCHIVES Vol. II will not be out this year at San Diego or elsewhere.
This does NOT mean that the project is cancelled, just further delayed. Multiple factors went into this decision:
1 - I've been too busy to give it proper work, writing three books, two ebooks, and a comic series which will be out this fall (Star Trek, Roswell, and Dragon's Lair the comic).
2 - George is busy with finishing JLA/Avengers and has given a lot of interviews lately.
3 - With the publication of Modern Masters and some upcoming magazines — many of which I assisted with art and reference — it seemed as if a second Archives might get lost.
I am still having discussions with the CBLDF about Vol. II. The first volume raised almost $7,000 for them after costs, so they're very interested in a second one. I'm looking at Spring/Summer 2004 as a possible release date to coincide with George's convention appearances.
IMPORTANT: Just because the book has been delayed does NOT mean that you shouldn't send me some of the sketches and commissions you may have gotten since the last book. I still need good quality copies of sketches and art! Address is below.
If you're interested in MY projects, please keep up with them on my webpage. Meanwhile, I hope all goes well in your lives!
Best,

A CLASS ACTION
At a dinner preceeding Baltimore Comicon, George Pérez at long last received his Defender of Liberty Statue. Pérez has been one of the Fund's most generous supporters over the years. His donations of time, art, and money have kept the Fund strong, particularly in the early stages of the Jesus Castillo defense. It was with a great deal of pride that the Fund was able to show our appreciation to George at the show.
Beyond his work for the Fund at conventions, Pérez and long-time archivist Andy Mangels created one of the Fund's most successful benefit books, The Pérez Archives, volume 1. the project was published in 2001 and sold out in less than a year, generating nearly $7,000 for the CBLDF.
Mangels compiled the book after a life-long interest in the work of George Pérez. "I've been archiving George's work since I was a teenager and keeping a checklist of his work. Because of this I've gotten an incredible amount of unpublished artwork that are cool examples of his genius. I wanted to do something with them that would showcase his work and raise money for a good cause," Mangels said.
Mangels spent over 400 hours compiling the book, which included hundreds of unpublished drawings by Pérez and a comprehensive checklist of the artist's work. "Because this was supposed to be the most comprehensive examination of George's career. I couldn't miss anything," Mangels tells Busted! "George and I went over it line by line, and ended up adding even more artwork and entries." All the time Mangels spent on the book was donated to benefit the CBLDF.
Mangels, whose science fiction and popular media books - and comics works - have put him on bestseller lists, is no stranger to good causes. For years he has been the leading gay activist in comic books, editing the awarding winning Gay Comics for eight years and working to improve the profile and working conditions of gay cartoonists in this medium. He chose the CBLDF as the beneficiary of the project for two reasons: "I really wanted to do the book because of my long interest in George's artwork and I was raised to really believe in causes and to help out other people. Although George has donated to various charities over the years, the one that he supported most and I felt the most passion about myself was the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. As a member of a minority group that faces adversity in a legal fashion - and homosexuality is still a crime in fourteen states - picking the CBLDF as our charity really hit home with me."
"Censorship of any kind is more of a crime than anything that could be published." Mangels says. "It doesn't mean that everything has a place on the bookshelf, but it also doesn't mean that things I don't want on my bookshelf shouldn't be published. For these reasons, even though these days I'm not working much in the comics industry and instead am doing novels, my commitment to the comic industry and the protection of creator rights is still very strong."
Right now Andy and the Fund are considering venues for a second edition of The Pérez Archives. In the meantime, here's some work by the master that has not yet been published. Enjoy!

There was a problem with the CBLDF NEWSLETTER: BUSTED #13 (which arrived today at comic stores), I did order a bundle of this (to give away), but apparently when my comic book store got it in - they just assumed it was something they had ordered, so they placed a free copy in all of their subscriber's inbox. I'm sorry if I promised you a free copy. You can obtain a free newsletter if you join CBLDF's membership donation for $25. If you keep up with the news, you'll know that this is a great cause!
Anyway, the 32 page newsletter has a two page article on Andy Mangels's THE PEREZ ARCHIVES #1 (and a small mentioning for the second issue). It also feature three unpublished artwork of Robin vs Deathstroke, the Terminator (2002), Firestorm (2002), and Captain America (1998), the first two can be found on The Artist's Choice.
If I get the time, I'll transcribe it for you guys to read.

What does the Captain read in his off-hours?
written by Andrew Smith
Science-fiction author (and sometime comics scribe) Andy Mangels of www.andymangels.com needs your help! Andy is assembling a comprehensive George Pérez checklist and asked the following:
Maybe you can help with this question. Recall, if you will, those Hostess ads of yore (so beautifully catalogued on www.seanbaby.com). Those days when Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and other sugary snack cakes could solve every problem in the world? George Pérez told me months ago that he drew one, with the Thing, called "Sunday Punch!" In it, The Thing fights a giant building - or is it a robot that looks like a building? I'm trying to find out in which comic(s) this appeared. Seanbaby doesn't know which issue (though he has a scan of it at his site), but says the back of the page has Mockingbird getting trounced. Help me, Cap!
The Captain responds:
Your specific question is easy enough to answer, Andy - "Sunday Punch" appeared in Marvel Team-Up #95 (Jul 80), starring Spidey and Mockingbird. But as to every comic book that ad appeared in - well, chances are it was in every Marvel published that month and maybe one or two on either side. Since even I am not masochistic enough to plow through every Marvel title of that time period, I'm throwing the question open to the Legion of Superfluous Heroes, some of whom might actually know this off the top of their pointy heads, or who file their comics chronologically. What about it, legionnaires - can we help Andy?
(Vu: The Thing looks like he's fighting the same creature that appeared on the cover of FANASTIC FOUR #188, which was created by the Molecule Man in the body of Reed Richards. Also, check out a "do it yourself" Hostess page.)

Perez Archives #2 Delayed
Tue, 9 Jul 2002 18:56:17 EDT
Howdy all -
Due to a variety of circumstances, THE PEREZ ARCHIVES Vol. II will not be out
this year at San Diego or elsewhere.
This does NOT mean that the project is cancelled, just delayed. Multiple
factors went into this decision:
1 - I've been too busy to give it proper work, writing THREE books which will
be out this fall (Star Trek DS9, Roswell, and Animation on DVD).
2 - George and I felt a little time between them would be a good thing.
3 - George isn't doing San Diego, and not nearly as many cons this year
anyhow.
4 - George doesn't have any big projects on the stands NOW, whereas next year
that may not be the case. ;>
I have had discussions with the CBLDF about Vol. II already. The first
volume raised almsot $8,000 for them after costs, so they're very pleased.
We may do a completely different format for the second one, and are kicking
ideas around for it.
IMPORTANT: Just because the book has been delayed does NOT mean that you
shouldn't send me some of the sketches and commissions you may have gotten
since the last book. I still need good quality copies of sketches and art!

From Andy Mangels
(excerpt)
The publication of THE PEREZ ARCHIVES in August of this year was a culmination of the last 24 years of my collecting George's work, and - I hope - a fitting and enjoyable tribute to the man whose graceful and meticulous linework and storytelling still capture my visual imagination.
Although I haven't been able to get a firm total from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund yet, it appears that THE PEREZ ARCHIVES has been one of their most sucessful fundraisers ever, bringing in somewhere around $8,000 or more!
...
But as I forge forward for my 25th year of collecting George's work - and as I start preliminary work for THE PEREZ ARCHIVES II for Summer 2002 - it's my hope that I'll get to know all of you better.

Pérez Archives 2002 |
|
From SKETCH MAGAZINE #10
Mangels has maintained a mammoth archive of Pérez's work for over twenty years. At the fall 2001 San Diego Comic Con, Mangels released The Pérez Archives. The self-published book contained a complete listing of Pérez's published work, along with lots of unpublished and rarely seen artwork. Sales of the Archives benefited the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and - to date - have raised over $8,000 for the CBLDF. A new version of the Archives is planned for summer 2002.
