The exodus of Peter David’s Fallen Angel from DC/Vertigo to IDW has been a really badly kept secret. Though thanks to the mention at yesterday’s DC Panel at Wizard World Philadelphia, Peter David has finally acknowledged it on his website. From what I’ve heard previously, there were some legal hurdles that had to be taken care of before they could proceed with the move, but early indications are that most of them have been dealt with and things are moving forward…
And there’s already someone being touted as the new Fallen Angel artist: J.K. Woodward. He’s best known for his work on Crazy Mary from Digital Webbing. Woodward is currently working on the comic adaptation of CSI: New York, which will be coming out from IDW in July. According to David’s newly released statement, the Fallen Angel relaunch will be coming out in December.

FALLEN ANGEL TO IDW
June 04, 2005
We had wanted to wait on an announcement to have the final contracts signed (they're not) and having sample artwork from the new artist (we don't). But Bob Wayne just announced at the Wizard Philly Con that "Fallen Angel" is going to IDW, so the timing ship has just sailed from the harbor.
So yeah, "Fallen Angel" will be relaunching in December (we hope) from IDW. The first storyline will reveal the Angel's true origin and, thus, will be an ideal jumping on point for anyone who hasn't read it until now.
More details will be available shortly in a detailed interview on Newsarama.

Excellent issue.
Any word on why DC pulled the Perez cover for #20?
Posted by Peter David at March 4, 2005 11:18 PM
DC didn't pull the Perez cover. George wasn't able to get a cover done in time for solicitation deadlines, so the editor had Dave and Fernando do one. But then it turned out that George WOULD be able to complete a cover in time for actual publication, particularly since DC(don't ask me why) had actually cut the book to bi-monthly publication. So that's the cover we'll be using. Technically speaking it makes #20 returnable, but we're pretty confident retailers won't return copies on the basis that it has a George Perez cover.

While David declined to elaborate on the meaning of his post when asked by Newsarama, an indication of the portability of to new locales is evident in the book’s indicia, and known to fans of the series - Fallen Angel is creator-owned by David and series artist David Lopez. One of a small handful of such titles to be set in the DC Universe (Bloodhound by Dan Jolley was another – the character is co-owned by Jolley, Drew Johnson and DC), Fallen Angel could see a move to a different publisher.
Additionally, as with the news of a series’ cancellation, word has come of an effort to bring the series back to the land of the living, with the effort being spearheaded by Colin O' Mahoney of Other Realms in Cork, Ireland.
“I believe, like most of our staff, that Fallen Angel is, in fact consistently the best comic being published. On hearing that DC had no plans to continue the series past issue #20 was understandably upset, and believe that in my position as a retailer I can make a difference. However, the difference one store can make is minimal. A bigger campaign is needed.
“As Peter David has said, if every retailer ordered two more copies of the comic then it could avoid cancellation. This does seem unlikely, I will admit, but I'm not willing to let the best comic on the market go without a fight. Earlier on today I phoned Diamond and upped our stores' order of Fallen Angel by 10 copies. I intend to promote it as comic of the week and make a real push to get customers to give it a chance. Issue #19 is the start of a new two part story arc. Two issues isn't a huge investment for a collector. Ten extra copies is a lot to ask of some retailers, but one or two or even five isn't.
“Obviously time is short as the issue is out next month but it's not too late. This is a call to retailers to do the right thing and give the brilliant world of Bete Noire a chance to live. Order however many extra copies you can and push customers to try it. Not one person I have shoved it on has not liked it, and moreover, they all now collect it. Read the comic yourselves. Save Bete Noire.”
O' Mahoney also asked retailers who agree with him to post in the thread below, indicating how many extra copies they’ve ordered.

I am currently inking the incredible Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez on a project written by Phil Jimenez, who is also the cover penciler, with me inking Phil. Unfortunately, beyond that, I'm not at liberty to reveal what the project is so I've been calling it "The EZ Company Project" since all three creators share the same last two letters in our family names. DC Comics should be making an announcement relatively soon and it will be a relief to finally be able to talk about it openly.
Contrary to solicitations I have indeed drawn the cover for FALLEN ANGELS #20. Due to a mix-up in the scheduling it initially appeared that I couldn't do the cover, so the regular team was told to go ahead and draw the cover. When Peter David found out about that he reminded the editor that the deadlines had been pushed back and even though the book had been solicited with another cover, Peter figured few would be bummed out to find that there was a Pérez cover after all.
I have also drawn a cover for a Marvel Visionaries book spotlighting my 1970's run on FANTASTIC FOUR. Tom Smith colored that piece and, as usual, did a wonderful job.
I am currently drawing a variant cover for Top Cow's CITY OF HEROES #1 and will be drawing the cover for a CITY OF HEROES novel called "Web of Arachnos". This should be the first of three covers for a series of CoH novels. And since I just mentioned Top Cow, I should also announce that I will be participating in a special 10th Anniversary edition of WITCHBLADE. I will be drawing three pages written by Ron Marz. And as I draw those pages I will be filmed by a video crew for TwoMorrows' DVD companion to its MODERN MASTERS book series.
There have been other offers, including some covers for Dynamic Forces' RED SONYA and ARMY OF DARKNESS. I also will be providing a cover for DF's STORYTELLER, yet another retrospective on my career. (I am definitely being over-exposed). A cover for ForceWerks' B.A.B.E. FORCE is also on my schedule. There have been other one-shots I've been offered that I'm not yet free to discuss, or yet to accept, but after "The EZ Company Project" I will be primarily focusing my attention on completing GAMES: THE TITANS GRAPHIC NOVEL. Inker Mike Perkins has already started on some pages and Tom Smith has 30 pages ready to start so it's up to me to get busy so that Marv Wolfman can start dialoguing the first half of the book.
As for conventions this year, here's my schedule for 2005 so far.
February 25-27: Mega Con in Orlando, FL.
March 18-20: Wizard World Los Angeles in Long Beach, CA
April 22-24: Pittsburgh Comicon in Monroeville, PA (I even provided the T-Shirt art)
July 14-17: Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA
September 13-17: Comic Book Festival in Avilés, Spain
Those are the confirmed shows. There is a possibility of more, but I'm trying to limit my time away from the drawing board this year.

Fallen Angel
February 17, 2005
As anyone who has read the DC solicits knows, issue #20 is slated to be the last one for DC. At this point, DC has no plans to do trade collections of the remaining books in the run.
We are not, however, quite dead yet.
Watch this space for further updates.

Guess what DC forgot to tell me...
That Dave Lopez and Fernando Blanco, thinking that "Fallen Angel" wasn't going past #18, picked up some work that, it turned out, they then had to swing into before they could get to the new issues of "Fallen Angel." So several weeks ago it was decided that #19 would ship in March, not February...and no one mentioned it to me.
So out come the February solicits and guess who's left going, "What the #*@%?!"
Oh well. I suppose the upside of this is two-fold. First off, you come out with a book on time, month in, month out, and fans take you for granted. Get delayed and suddenly everyone's talking about you. And second, it gives us that much more time to get the word out about "Sachs and Violens" showing up for a two-issue guest stint. When I get some pages in of Dave and Fernando's rendition, I'll post them here.

FALLEN ANGEL GETS A LITTLE HELP FROM PAD'S FRIENDS

(excerpt)
NRAMA: With the Miraculous recovery you're good to go for #19 and #20 in February and March, respectively. What's coming in there?
PETER DAVID: Well, that’s the nifty thing. For the first time in the history of Fallen Angel, we’re actually going to have official guest stars. For years now, fans have been asking me if I’m ever going to revisit Sachs and Violens, the characters who starred in the four issue limited series George Perez and I did years ago for Epic’s “Heavy Hitters” line. The answer is, yup, they’ll be showing up for a two-parter in Fallen Angel #19 and #20.
NRAMA: For folks who may not have been collecting, or that may have been too young [the miniseries was very mature readers] to pick the miniseries up in ’93-’94, can you explain just who Sachs and Violens are, both as characters and as a property?
PAD: Basically it was Modesty Blaise meets 9 ½ Weeks. They were two street-level adventurers with a rather unique worldview. To quote from my intro in the first issue: “It is one of the bizarre truisms of our society that sex and violence seem inextricably linked in the public perception. As if they both have the same gravity, that both are intolerable, and that both are a scourge of our society to be dealt with. It would seem incomprehensible, though, how the two might actually be related to one another. Sachs and Violens is a series that attempts to draw a connection between the two while at the same time exploring the fundamental hypocrisy in a society that, in casual parlance, has joined an act that ultimately leads to life with an act that ultimately leads to death. The adventures of J.J. Sachs and Ernie “Violens” Schultz. Two people who battle some of the greatest evils of our society: Pornography. Murder. White Slavery. Religious fanaticism. And why do they do this? Because they get an erotic charge from risking their lives. Violence begets sex.”
NRAMA: They were...unique characters who had a...unique relationship. I often got the feeling that you and George were playing "I dare ya" with each other and the audience in regards to the stories, the relationship, and where things went. Was that part of the intent at least - to see how far you could push the envelope?
PAD: Oh yeah, absolutely. It’s pretty out there. J.J. is an ass-kicking model-turned-crusader, and Ernie is a war-scarred photographer with anger management issues whose one joy was when J.J. got turned on by one of their adventures and would jump his bones. I mean, there was never anything outright obscene about it. It was sort of a nudge-nudge, wink-wink aspect to it. We weren’t out to get retailers arrested for selling porn. But it pushed the envelope back in the early ‘90s and, considering the way the country has gotten more repressed rather than less, it’d probably be thought of as even more testing of limits now.
