Giving credit where credit is due, Catwoman: Nine Lives of a Femline Fatale lives up to its title premise by presenting nine tails, ah, tales, each distinctive of a different era in the career of the super-villainess. It's hard to quibble with Editor Anton Kawasaki's choices.

"The Cat" from 1940's Batman #1 was the lady's debut - but its includsion does rule out a number of other terrific stories from the decade. From 1966, "The Catwoman's Black Magic" is also a must-have, although it's the single most bizarre use of the Feline Felon ever. From 1967, Gardner Fox's "Catwoman Sets Her Claws for Batman" is an amusing adventure - gust-starring Batgirl - but Selina Kyle is not well served by either 1969's "The Case of the Purloined Pearl" or 1986's "A Town on the Night."

Were I awarding "best of show" medals, they'd go to "The Crimes of the Catwoman" (the 1954 episode in which writer Edmond Hamilton returned the reformed villainess to crime), "Object Relations" (Devin Grayson's wonderfully dark comedy from 1998), and "Claws" (a heartbreaking animated-style adventure by writer Ty Templeton and artists Rich Burchett and Terry Beatty).

The Perez pin-up which appears in Catwoman: Nine Lives of a Feline Fatale originally appeared in Batman 3-D. Tom Smith posted the colored version at comicboards.com recently (near as I can remember), and the colored version is the one that saw print in the Catwoman trade.

Catwoman: Nine Lives of a Feline Fatale (DC Comics) - DAVE: I think I was all of five or six when ultimate femme fatale, Catwoman, first left my jaw on the floor. For that, I'd like to thank Julie Newmar and the costume designers of the '60s Batman show. I've had a soft spot for her since, especially the older '40s stuff and the newer Brubaker stuff. This trade covers "Best Of" stories from ALL her different incarnations, and even though it's timed to coincide with the precarious Halle Berry movie, yeah, I'll probably pick it up. Pin-ups by George Perez, Joe Jusko, Adam Hughes, and more. (page 101)
