HICKMAN WRITING ON COMMON GROUNDS
posted 11-12-2004 01:59 PM
BY SCOTT MATEO
(excerpt)
THE PULSE: The story with Blackwatch and Commander Power had one of those endings that makes you immediately want to read it all over again. What inspired you to write it?
TROY
HICKMAN: That story, "Time of Their Lives", is a really pivotal story in the Common Grounds mythos. The events in it have major repercussions throughout CG continuity. As far as the inspiration, I've always had an interest in aging heroes and villains, and in stories like this and "Glory Days" I try to explore what that would have to be like. It's also a story about perceptions, and about how a single moment, a single mistake, can unravel the fabric of our lives.
THE PULSE: Yeah, "Glory Days" was really well done. George Perez's art was truly amazing!
HICKMAN: Amazing is the word for it. Isn't that the most beautiful thing you've ever laid your eyes on? Ha, I realize I sound gushy, but y'know, I started reading George's stuff when he started doing it professionally, back in Creatures on the Loose #33, I believe it was, and since that day, there's probably not a artist in this business I would have rather had draw one of my stories. It is, and will always be, one of the great joys of my life. Within a year, I went from a guy folding and stapling his own mini-comics to one with a comic on the stands drawn by Mr. George Perez! Geez ... life, y'know?

11/03 COMMON GROUNDS TPB

Dear Comic Reader of the World,
Hey. All apologies for not making this a “formal” kinda press release, but… waitasec. Why should I apologize for that? Who really likes press releases? They’re the speed limit signs of life. They’re just kinda “there,” and nobody really pays attention to ’em, right?
Anyhoo, a word or 417 about Common Grounds. The paperback collecting the acclaimed 6-issue Top Cow mini-series written by Troy Hickman hits Your Local Comic Store on Nov. 10. How acclaimed? Hey…
• This is the book that Guillermo del Toro called “Endearing, moving, and painfully human!”
• This is the book that Mark Waid called “Very clever, very sharp, and surprisingly poignant!”
• This is the book that caused Joe Quesada to say, “You guys are on to something with this Hickman cat—he could be the surprise hit of the year!”
• This is the book that caused Troy’s own mom to ponder, "So what is it you do with these comic books? You type the words into the bubbles above their heads?"
Aside from that, Common Grounds is an artistic tour de force. Thirteen stories reside within the pages of the paperback, illustrated by George Pérez, Ethan van Sciver, Chris Bachalo, Carlos Pacheco, Sam Kieth, Michael Avon Oeming, Angel Medina and Dan Jurgens. A veritable galaxy of stars!
But more than anything, this is a passion project, both for myself and Troy Hickman. I first encountered Troy in Artist’s Alley at Wizard World Chicago, hawking hand-stapled issues of Kinko’s-copied mini-comics. Troy’s stories were—and still are—told with passion. And depth. And feeling. And above all, humanity. It’s been a pleasure to bring these stories to life in Common Grounds. Many have already tasted of this heady brew in the original issues. Word-of-mouth has spread, as fan has told fan. Now, it’s your opportunity to get ’em all, in one place at one time. I suggest you do.
Okay, promise kept: This wasn't your typical press release. But then, Common Grounds is not your typical comic book.
Sincerely,
Jim McLauchlin

Common Grounds Comes Together for New TP
week of 9/13/2004
Troy Hickman's Common Grounds mini-series may be over, but the coffee-&-doughnut shop where good guys and bad guys take their time off is still open, and readers can order a hefty helping of heroes and villains this month in the Common Grounds TP (SEP041574, $19.99) from Image Comics/Top Cow Productions.
Hickman began exploring the off-hours of super-beings in his original mini-comic Holey Crullers, which won him numerous admirers among critics, readers, and fellow creators. Common Grounds has expanded Hickman's readership base dramatically, and readers who haven't already done so should take advantage of this opportunity to examine the human sides of these superhumans.
Written by Hickman and illustrated by a stellar line-up of superstar artists -- including Dan Jurgens, George Pérez, Carlos Pacheco, Ethan van Sciver, and others -- the 144-page collection will include all 13 stories from the mini-series, featuring memorable heroes, villains, monsters, and other beings in stories loaded with humor, heart, and poignancy. From Speeding Bullet to Grondar the Unbelievable Monster from Planet X, Common Grounds' menu of heroes and villains offers something for every readers' taste.
