"The Best of All Worlds" Part 2 (5 pages)
    writer:
    interview:
    Bill Baker
    George Pérez

Special issue featuring legendary Prince Valiant creator HAL FOSTER and Liberty Meadows creator FRANK CHO!

Features a major article on the life and career of HAL FOSTER, artist on Tarzan (1931-37) and Prince Valiant (1937-80). Despite his standing as one of the pre-eminent comic strip artists of all time, no complete well-researched biographies have been written about Foster. Now, author Brian Kane has written what will surely become the major reference work on his life and career in a new book from Vanguard PRess. The book is due out this fall, and CBM #89 will contain a review of the book by Russ Cochran along with photos and excerpts from the book.

What makes hot young artist FRANK CHO so popular with comic strip veterans like AL WILLIAMS? His daily and Sunday Liberty Meadows strips (and their comic book counterpart) have regularly poked fun at classic comic strips (Peanuts, Cathy, Tarzan, and others including Prince Valiant), but the established masters of the form seem to love him. What's behind the pop culture machine that is Frank Cho? Find out about that, the success of his recent coffee table books, and the final fate of Liberty Meadows in Comic Book Markplace #89!

COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE: GEORGE PEREZ PACK (Apr 2004) The unexpurgated interview from Comic Book Marketplace...

    Part 1

    Part 2

(Vu: I did mention about the interviews being online in July 2003, but since not a lot of people saw this it deserved a second mention. The interview, by Bill Baker, is quite long, and is unedited.)

I heard the best Superhero song: "Ode To A Superhero" by Al Yankovic. It's sung to "Piano Man" by Billy Joel, and it pretty much sums up the Spider-Man movie, especially the part about William Defoe looking scarier without the Goblin mask. Heheh.

As you know, according to "The Best of All Worlds: George Perez" published in COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #86, #89, #90 and #94, George Pérez likes to listen to "Weird" Al when he draws.

You can read part one and two the interview on Bill Baker's website, www.hypethis.com.

THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS (Part Two of Three)
    by Bill Baker

Editor's note: In issue 86 we kicked off Bill Baker's extensive CBM interview with George perez by focusing on his stints on The Avengers and the upcoming Avengers/JLA crossover. This issue, we'll turn our attention to his role in creating The New Teen Titans and Crisis on Infinite Earths at DC with writer Marv Wolfman.

  • NEW TEEN TITANS #8
  • (excerpt)

CBM: you mentioned earlier that you got to design some of the new characters, like Cyborg, Raven, etc. how much input did you have into the basic creation, outside the visuals, of those characters?
Pérez: Initially, not very much. Cyborg, I was a little more [involved]. Since I grew up in the south Bronx and [come] from a Puerto Rican background I had a little more I could actually put into Cyborg's personality, and from the way he stood and everything else. For me, Kory, was just this Red Sonja from out space, and raven was the Phantom Stranger in drag. So I just treated that as archetypes, and just designed it from there. It wasn't until Marv and I talked a bit more than I started understanding where Marv was going - when issue eight came in - that is when I really, really started putting more into their characterizations. From the inside, as opposed to letting Marv tell me how they're behaving. [ From then on] I understood how they behaved, and each character had a little extra soul in them as well.

March 10, 2002 | Part 2 of CBM Pérez Interview
    From Bill Baker
I'm happy to report that the latest issue of Comic Book Marketplace #89, which is dated March, 2002 -- contains the second part of my extended interview with George Pérez. This section covers his work with Marv Wolfman, and particularly concentrates on his contributions to both the Teen Titans relaunch and the Crisis on Infinite Earths cross-over. And, for any "good girl" junkies out there [or people who just like well drawn and laugh-out-loud, truly funny books], there's a short chat with none other than Frank Cho, creator of Liberty Meadows, in there as well.

As for the future and the final bits of the interview, I've been told that the rest of the GP chat will be appearing in a future issue of CBM, along with the as-yet unpublished sidebars featuring Jim Shooter and Marv Wolfman. I'll forward all details on which issue[s] this material will be in as I get it.

And, as always, thanks for the support, and for your help in getting the word out on this interview to all of George's fans. And my thanks to them for their continued patience, and understanding in this matter.

COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #86 ran the first part of a massive George Pérez interview, entitled "The Best of All Worlds" by Bill Baker. The rest of the interview is still pending publishing from CBM, the next installment (part two of the interview) is scheduled to be published in COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #89, according to Tony Lorenz's conversation with CBM.

I was going to just mention briefly what you guys can expect in the upcoming interviews, but after reading through (most) of the interview, I have to mention that there was a lot of work involved in this massive interview. Not only does it cover pretty much everything of George's career, but it also features side bar interviews with people who's worked with George, like Jim Shooter, Marv Wolfman, Kurt Busiek, and so on.

    PART TWO
Part two covers George's work with Marv Wolfman, CRISIS, and TEEN TITANS.

    PART THREE
Covers AVENGERS (Volume 3) and CrossGen Comics

    PART FOUR
Covers JLA/AVENGERS and George's working environment.

This was probably the best interview I've read on George. Very complete and very detailed. I have to thank Bill Baker his generous offer to let me read it. Keep your eyes here for an annoucement for his website to be online sometime soon.

    Real George
I drove all over the Tampa area looking for the Pérez cover edition [of CBM #86], but to no avail. So I've decided to order it directly from you. New issue is great as always. I see a theme trend (I don't know if it's because of the new editor), a lot more modern stuff. The magazine is always fun to read; I hope you don't go too far from your roots (Golden Age). Good to see a nice write-up on Randy Reynolds' great book, not just because he's a friend of mine.

I've also enclosed a copy of my magazine, The George Pérez Newsletter #1; #2 has been printed and should be out soon. Plenty of artwork, articles, trivia, interviews and much more. If any of your readers want to check it out they can contact me at the address below.

I am a big fan of George Pérez, so I bought CBM #86 for his interview. When I had read that the interview was only Part 1, I assumed that issue 87 would feature the continued interview, only to discover that there wasn't any. So I'm left wondering what will happen to the rest of the interview?

    Thank you in advance.

[ We have had so many prior commitments for other articles that we haven't had space to run the rest of the Pérez interview yet. But we do plan to do so, so stay tuned.]

Not much else to write about, except that Bill Baker's interview with George Pérez (the next installment is scheduled to appear in COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #89) is very, very long. The material looks to be about 25 pages plus, with all the sidebars!

Just got off the phone with Gemstone and they say the next part of the George Perez feature should be in issue 89, they also said there should be a plug of my magazine, THE GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER, in the letter column of the next issue #88.

Like some of you, I have pre-ordered my CBM #87 because I thought it would logically contain some of the unfinished interview with George Pérez from their previous issue (#86). So, feeling gypped, I have emailed to Comic Book Marketplace asking where the rest of the interview is, but I have not yet gotten a reply from them.

Do not buy COMIC BOOK MARKETPLACE #87 (or CBM #88-89), it does not have anything to do with George Pérez. I'm left to wonder what will happen to part two of the George Pérez interview ?
