Fans on the lookout for George Pérez at Wizard World Texas this weekend didn't have to look farther than one booth—but once found, the artist was determined to make fans pay.
"I'm here to make money for the Hero Initiative, and so far I'm doing great there," explained the legendary creator of his work with the fund whose primary mission is to support long-standing and retired creators. "I think I made at least a grand yesterday, and I'll probably make another grand today. My goal was always $500 a day, but I'm a sucker for charity."
In a rare moment when he didn't have a lineup of autograph-seekers toting stacks of everything from classic issues of Avengers to his most recent work on Infinite Crisis, the always-excited Pérez updated Wizard Universe on the status of his newest gig—penciling DC Comics' relaunch of team-up series The Brave and the Bold for writer Mark Waid.
"I'm drawing issue #2 right now, and the book's scheduled to come out in February," said Pérez. "I believe this weekend Bob Wiacek will have finished inking the book, and Tom Smith has colored about the first 16 pages. The book's running fine schedule-wise, and I'm on page 6 or 7 of issue #2 right now and doing the cover of issue #3. There's also a variant cover they asked me to draw for issue #1. Every time I'm making momentum, they add more stuff to my schedule to make me work harder to keep the schedule."
