29 - THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD
    02/2007: The Brave and the Bold #1 — 92,091 [96,510]
    03/2007: The Brave and the Bold #2 — 64,357 (-30.1%)

Mixed signals: The book started out with excellent numbers, but this is a very steep second-issue drop. In part, to be fair, that’s because issue #1 came with a 1-in-10 variant cover edition and #2 didn’t; and the 4,419 additional units sold of #1 in March do suggest that there’s demand for the book. Still, a third of the debut issue’s sales has evaporated, and that’s not very encouraging.

This may be the comic book Mark Waid was born to write. All characters were written with more respect to their classic characterization than they usually receive elsewhere. Batman, especially, was the "Dark Night Detective" and not the brooding militaristic misanthrope he so often is mischaracterized as. Waid did the tradition of B&B's original writer, Bob Haney, proud here.

George Perez, if possible, has challenged himself to up his game on this series. Which seems impossible, but I swear some of his work here was the best he's ever done. What an amazing talent and an amazing comic book from cover to cover. Even when I look for something to criticize, I can't find it.

But I have say, even though I plan to keep up with the book because I really like the concept, this book was really pretty disapointing. To me sometimes Mark Waid's writing, in particular, his dialouge can start to come off very wooden, like I had that problem with his Flash run earlier in his career. I thought after reading Legion of Super-heroes that he had spiced things back up, but it's still very flat dialouge. Which...I mean...is certainly a part of the premise to this book, it's supposed to throw back to that sort of era, I understand that, but it doesn't really mean that in 2007 I really enjoy reading it, on top of given how often Waid ends up with dialouge like this, it seems kind of like a crutch.

Wanna know what happens next? So do I. I actually liked this quite a bit. Mark Waid shows his silver age DC upbringing here. He and artist George Perez obviously had a lot of fun doing this, and it shows up mostly in the fact that it was fun to read. Nothing groundbreaking, just one of those really fun reads, that makes you feel 10 years old again. It's a solid comic, with a solid story (albeit a tad corny what with all the gambling references), and solid artwork.

First question to cross my mind when I recently received a review copy of the revived DC superhero title, The Brave and the Bold, was, "So which Green Lantern is this on the front cover?" Last time this writer ventured very deeply into the current state of Green Lantern, the ring of power was in the hands of a young cartoonist named Kyle, while Hal Jordan - the Silver Age GL of my youth - was apparently serving time as the Spectre for some major cosmic crime.

The figure on the cover of The Brave and the Bold #1, flying over a Batman who appears to be ducking back from a power ring shot, looked like Hal Jordan, but I lived through the first Spider Clone Saga. I've learned not to take this stuff for granted.

The original B&B was, for most of its run, a Batman team-up book, but apparenly this new version will feature different characters each month. I think that's a good idea--Batman is way more over-exposed than he was in the 1970s, and this way more obscure DCU characters can get a month to shine, and/or it allows Waid and the editors the chance to put some unusual characters together. Next month, for example is Green Lantern and Supergirl. Unlike this issue, I assume Hal gets top billing in that team-up.

For the second series to what was a very popular book, the action is almost non-stop, and hardly takes the time to slow down. All of the attributes that define the title characters are displayed here with flawless execution- not only do we see a bit of the classic iterations of Batman and Green Lantern, but there are some modern elements included that refine them as well. Even if this comes off as a good debut issue, it jumps from one act to another at a frenetic pace, so what I had said before serves to move the story forward, but it ends up having throwing a villain like Roulette into the mix with very little to do with the main plot; even if she was part of the catalyst of the story.

It would be unfair to reveal more, because Waid slowly and methodically peels back layers page by page as the action scenes—and these are top-notch—play out at a regular clip. This is the kind of well-orchestrated character book that can handily reveal nuance and humor, but not at the expense of great storytelling. Batman regularly gets to utilize those honed detective skills, and Hal Jordan uses his ring (along with the admittedly corny Green Lantern rhyming oath). A particularly effective moment comes when Jordan compares the loyalty of his power battery to that of Batman's lap-dog training of Robin. Waid regularly pounces on moments like this where each of the heroes can appear to have the advantage over his partner. They work together quite well, but each one wants to be the coolest guy in the room, and they both get their chances.

It seems superfluous to even mention it but Perez and Wiacek are sublime on the art chores. From the cosmic scenes of Green Lantern in space to the brooding Batman in the Batcave through to the bright lights of Las Vegas, Perez's busy, intricate panels are a joy to behold.

For reader identification it's great to see the featured characters' logos displayed so prominently on the cover as well, something that the last volume of Marvel Team-Up inexplicably failed to do. It's eye-catching and markets the book to its greatest strengths.

George Perez's art is stunning, iconic and fluid. There is a sense of place, appearance and density to the art that will remind fans why Perez is one of the three best artists of his generation working today. Saying anything further about Perez's art is pointless because he is the superhero high water mark. The only criticism with the book is that the main cover looks flat and stock. The other cover reflects the story, yet is a tad lacking.

With the rest of the art team, Bob Wiacek brings an ink line that both compliments and brings drama to the art and Tom Smith does a great job on colour. Smith can be a very busy colorist, but when combined with the legendarily complex work Perez turns in, he works perfectly.

With that said, this is a very traditional comic book. The Brave and The Bold is a good new series. It's not Fine Art but it never tries to be, instead aiming solidly at entertaining the young and the young at heart. It's a comic that is just that, a comic, 22 pages of pure entertainment. And with Perez and Waid onboard, many a reader will find that a thrilling prospect.

Of course, like I've already addressed a bit, what brought so many people to this party is the return to monthlies by the peerless George Perez. I've heard musings already that he's turning in so-so work, but even if that was the case, his average work blows away most of the overrated newbies in the big studios' stable by miles. Having him supported by Bob Wiacek is the way to go as he inks in a style completely complimentary to Perez's pencils. That he makes it look like Perez handled every step of the artistic process is a good thing. Nothing is better than work penciled AND inked by George Perez, and Wiacek earns props for creating that effect. Despite having a bit of a problem navigating some of the action in the Batcave sequence I mentioned earlier (page 10 and 11, sadly, fails to gel properly), I'm still in awe of the detailed work Perez brings to this one issue. Backgrounds, for Pete's sake, and good ones! And while it took a minute to register, I like how Perez weaved in the action taking place with Batman with Green Lantern when they were fighting the aliens, Atum and Neferto, who were responsible for the homicide investigation that brought them to Vegas in the first place. It was also appreciated that Perez is not so stuck in his own style that he can't invoke certain design aspects of the characters that are the norm these days, especially with GL and how his energy signature is laid out when he uses his power ring. Alex Ross, please take notes.

Bringing back the spirit of the late-70's/early-80's requires an artistic touch from that era. I can think only of three artists of high enough caliber that would be the right choice for a book like this, and John Byrne has been off his game for more than a decade, so if not Jose Luis Garcia Lopez then who better but George Perez. Perez brings his detail-heavy, scenery-packed sequential art to life with the help of Bob Wiacek on inks and Tom Smith's eye-popping art. The book, for all it's today-ness, has the same wide-eyed comic-book gusto that it would have had were it presented 20, 30 or 40 years ago.

It's odd that something that should be so standard in the market feels like a breath of fresh air. So, if you're overwhelmed with political allegories, whiny mutants, war after war after war, and superhero deconstruction, then this is exactly what you want and pass it along to your 8-year-old when you're done.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 (Feb 2007)
ORLANDO -- With editor Joey Cavalieri stuck in New York because of the weather, George Perez proved brave and bold enough to handle The Brave and The Bold panel at MegaCon on Friday.

    (excerpt)

    Following are the highlights:
    * Perez had in hand an early look at The Brave and The Bold #1, which reaches stores on Wednesday. Since he has only two more convention appearances -- in New York and Pittsburgh -- until 2009, he decided to sign the book and make it available at the convention through Hero Initiative.

    * Perez noted that he just found out that he'll be doing 10 issues of The Brave and The Bold per year with writer Mark Waid. "My contracted stipulated 10 books per year because DC didn't want to overburden me," Perez said. "I didn't know about it. None us knew there was a skip month."

DC's just-released May solicitations revealed no The Brave and The Bold #4. That issue will arrive in stores in June, and there will be a skip month every four months.

IGN Comics: So let's start with Brave and the Bold. It seems like we've been hearing about this book for a while now. Can you tell us a little about how you and George got on the book and how this project came to be?
Mark Waid: Well, it came up about a year and a half ago. Dan DiDio came up to me when I was looking to sign an exclusive. We were looking to figure out what that last piece of the puzzle might be that would make me sign. Offering Brave and the Bold, and dangling that in front of me, was a huge temptation, because it would give me a chance to play with everything in the DC Universe. I'm not limited to one or two characters; I can play across the line.

Part of the stated goal of this book too, both at the time, and even more importantly now that we've gone through Infinite Crisis and 52, is that Brave and the Bold is supposed to be a kind of journeyman's tour through the new DC Universe. It's not the stated or most obvious goal of the series, but I think as you get into it, you'll realize that we're trying to, when you finish the first dozen or so issues, give you a pretty good picture of the overall DC Universe these days, like how the characters interact with each other now. We'll see some of the more famous places, and try to get a sense of the DCU as a cohesive universe.

So Dan held this out to me, it sounded great, and we started talking. Then months and months went by and, as I recall, George Pérez said that he was offered something else first - I want to say it was Green Lantern, but I can't swear to it - but he was interested when he heard about Brave and the Bold, and thought it was cool, because he'd get to play with all the characters, instead of just one or two. So it coincided nicely with George saying, "If you don't have anyone for Brave and the Bold, I'm up for that!" We'd be idiots not to put George on Brave and the Bold. He's the perfect guy for it.

In February, he and artist George Pérez (JLA/Avengers) will unveil The Brave and the Bold, a revamped version of perhaps the most revered team-up title in DC Comics history, an ongoing series that will breath new life into the roating character concept by injecting the one element team-up books having desperately lacked over the past 20 years: relevance.

"Team-ups used to provide a rare chance to see your two favorite heroes together, which - in and of itself - was an attractive, exciting thing," Waid says, "But because Marvel and DC have so distilled and concentrated their universes over the past 10-15 years, the novetly worn thin. That's part of the challenge of Brave and the Bold; to reinvigorate the fans, to get them enthused again about the notion."

George Perez is tackling his first monthly title in three years with DC Comics' The Brave and The Bold, which launches next month.

"It took me a few pages to get back into the monthly grind, but I'm having a great, great time," Perez said last weekend at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in Mesa, Ariz.

Perez reiterated that the title, written by Mark Waid, will not be a "Batman and..." book, although Batman and Green Lantern are featured in the first issue.

"I recently drew a cover that had Supergirl with a cycle chick outfit and on a spacecycle, dragging Lobo in tow," Perez said.

"I don't know about the plot of that issue because I do the covers in advance, but I love that Mark Waid is throwing me all these curveballs."

Perez said that a convention appearance in Pittsburgh in late April will be his last until 2009.

That series inspired me to build a "Kingdom Come" fan site, which eventually grew to become CBR. Since then, I've been a very big fan of Mark's work, including his definitive work on "The Flash" - one of my favorite runs of a comic - his creator owned series "Empire," or more recent work on books like Marvel's "Fantastic Four" or DC's "Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes" and "52." Mark can always count on me as a reader. Next up for the DC Comics exclusive writer is "The Brave and the Bold" with artist George Pérez, a series I know myself and many readers are highly anticipating.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD (Feb 2007)
Waid, who firmly believes that the creation of comics should be a collaborative effort between writer and artist, had nothing but good things to say about penciller George Perez and inker Bob Wiacek. "George is a consummate storyteller, so he gets the stories, he really understands what we're going for all the time and he contributes his own bits to it," Waid told CBR News. "And Wiacek's inks look amazing, I think it's as good as George's work has looked in a long, long time."

Perez, a veteran writer and storyteller himself, requested that Waid refrain from writing full scripts for "Brave and the Bold." "So we've adapted the working process – now it's a plot that we talk about over the phone, I'll write it up sort of panel by panel with rough dialogue, with the idea that George is free to sort of re-pace it and break it down as he sees fit, and then I go back and finalize the dialogue," Waid explained.

MARK WAID TALKS THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD

    (excerpt)

NRAMA: Before we let you go, we would be remiss not to ask about working with George Pérez…What's it like watching is pages come in, and what are you doing as a writer to craft the stories towards his particular talents?
MW: Going through my DC Who's Who and DC Encyclopedia with a renewed intensity. It's great because it's forcing me to use muscles I don't often use - I'm better with smaller casts than with large, sprawling ones, and the trick to drawing in so many extra heroes and villains to keep George stoked is in making sure that they're introduced well and freshly to new readers. We take nothing for granted with our audience and don't want this series to be nothing but a fanboy playground; again, the mission statement for B&B is "a broad look at the new DCU," so we're making an extra effort to ensure that brand new readers as well as longtime fans are properly introduced (or re-introduced) to the various co-stars and guest-stars.

    WIZARD WORLD TEXAS 2006 (10-12 Nov 2006)

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #2 (Mar 2007)

Fans on the lookout for George Pérez at Wizard World Texas this weekend didn't have to look farther than one booth—but once found, the artist was determined to make fans pay.

"I'm here to make money for the Hero Initiative, and so far I'm doing great there," explained the legendary creator of his work with the fund whose primary mission is to support long-standing and retired creators. "I think I made at least a grand yesterday, and I'll probably make another grand today. My goal was always $500 a day, but I'm a sucker for charity."

In a rare moment when he didn't have a lineup of autograph-seekers toting stacks of everything from classic issues of Avengers to his most recent work on Infinite Crisis, the always-excited Pérez updated Wizard Universe on the status of his newest gig—penciling DC Comics' relaunch of team-up series The Brave and the Bold for writer Mark Waid.

"I'm drawing issue #2 right now, and the book's scheduled to come out in February," said Pérez. "I believe this weekend Bob Wiacek will have finished inking the book, and Tom Smith has colored about the first 16 pages. The book's running fine schedule-wise, and I'm on page 6 or 7 of issue #2 right now and doing the cover of issue #3. There's also a variant cover they asked me to draw for issue #1. Every time I'm making momentum, they add more stuff to my schedule to make me work harder to keep the schedule."

Waid: There have been 15 heroes and 15 villains so far in the issues he’s written, giving a sample – issue #1: Batman & Green Lantern; #2: Supergirl, Green Lantern, Batman, Blue Beetle; #3: – all of those plus Adam Strange and Lobo.

Q: Will we see Green Arrow team up with Batman?
Waid: Statistically, it’s got to happen.

TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT DVD (2007)
BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 (Fall 2006)
Working with Warner Bros. Home Video and WB Animation, the company will launch a new line of direct-to-video DC animated movies that are being designed with DC Comics fans in mind, Levitz said.

...The third title in the series will be an animated version of the classic story Teen Titans story “The Judas Contract”, written by Marv Wolfman. Tom DeStano (X-Men) will join Wolfman as co-writer and producer on the film.

"This is just the beginning," Levitz said. "We're sitting around and thinking of more...so send all your suggestions in."

Levitz also added that George Perez will be working on the animated Judas Contract as well, and that Bruce Timm will be overseeing all the animated films.

"We’re looking at more than the last five minutes of history," Levitz said in regards to what will differentiate this from movies such as Ultimate Avengers.

    ...

DC displayed the George Perez cover to Brave and the Bold #1, a November debuting ongoing series by Waid and Perez. Guess who the first story arcs stars..?

Crisis on Infinite Interview - An afternoon with George Perez
    Written by Doug Zawisza
    Thursday, 29 June 2006

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 (Fall 2006) DC BIBLE (Unofficial Name) (2007)
George Perez has been there done that. Heck he’s even seen his work grace more than a few t-shirts. But any fan will tell you that George Perez is, hands down, the #1 artist for drawing team books and group scenes. Avengers. Justice League of America. Teen Titans. Crisis on Infinite Earths. Infinite Crisis. JLA/Avengers. JSA. He has literally drawn every character either of the “Big Two” can throw at him and he still keeps coming back for more.

    (excerpt)

What’s on the horizon for you?
The Brave & the Bold with Mark Waid is supposed to start in November, but with my work on Infinite Crisis and JSA, Waid on 52, we’ve slowed down a bit. I am also working on some model sheets to give a reference file. It became obvious that something like this was needed when I was woking on JLA/Avengers, JSA and Infinite Crisis that there were too many style variations. Certain artists draw a belt a certain way, ‘Which is the acceptable version’? The model sheets will be used for costume details and hair color. For example, the Golden Age Green Lantern (Alan Scott) is the only Green Lantern to wear the ring on his left hand. All of the others wear it on their right hand, paw, tentacle or whatever. This is supposed to go together with a DC bible for Waid.

    DF INTERVIEW: MARK WAID
    Wednesday, April 19, 2006 10:21:11 AM
    By Toney Tapia

Mark Waid was born in Hueytown, Alabama. He bought his first comic, Batman #180, at age four and has never once since entertained the notion of not buying comics. He lived all over the Deep South through his formative teenage years, though you couldn't tell it by his accent, thank God.

    (excerpt)

DYNAMIC FORCES: I guess you're really busy with this small thing that's going on over at DC called "52" and the "One Year Later" Series. What do you have planned for the DC Universe during this time?
MARK WAID: If only I could reveal some of the details on 52--but we're sworn to secrecy. All I can tell you is that we're already up to issue 22 in scripts and we're having a blast. Beyond that, there's also SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES every month with Barry Kitson, and upcoming this fall, BRAVE AND BOLD with George Perez, the DC team-up book.

GEORGE PEREZ GETS BRAVE AND BOLD AT PITTSBURGH

PITTSBURGH COMICON 2006 (21-23 Apr 2006), Monroeville, PA
    BRAVE AND THE BOLD (2006)

Who is really going to pass up the chance to talk with George Perez? The man is a legend in the comics industry, and when he talks, you damn well sit down and listen. And when he talks about a new project, you start taking notes. On the final day of the Pittsburgh Comicon, artist to the stars George Perez hosted a panel that featured updates on the up and coming new series from DC Comics, “The Brave and the Bold.” Initially, Perez was to be joined by series writer Mark Waid, but, unfortunately, Waid was unable to attend the convention. That did not, however, stop Perez from giving his fans the scoop.

First off, though, before we can get to “The Brave and the Bold,” Perez wanted everyone to know that his fill-in pages on “Infinite Crisis” #7 were indeed done and mailed out the previous Wednesday (April 19, for those of you keeping score). He also stated that he enjoyed doing the work, even though it ended up being more than he planned. That said, he moved on to the theme of the panel, the relaunch of everyone’s favorite team-up book.

    ...

Lastly, no talk with George Perez would be complete without a discussion of the Teen Titans. One audience member asked whatever became of the “Titans: Games” project Perez had begun with Marv Wolfman. Perez explained that, before the plug was pulled on the project, he had completed about 75 pages of artwork out of the planned 125 pages. However, the title seemed to get lost in the editorial wheels, and Perez explained that should the chance to work with Wolfman ever comes up again, he’d do it in a heartbeat, though he’d like to do something more progressive, rather than just reliving old glories. In summary, though, Perez stated that he loves working on comics, and he wants to die with an unfinished page on his drawing board.

PITTSBURGH COMICON 2006 (21-23 Apr 2006), Monroeville, PA
    BRAVE AND THE BOLD (2006)

Catching up with George Perez is no easy task. It's been a busy year for the artist. In between his time working on the interiors of the seven-part mini-series Infinite Crisis, a recent issue of JSA and the upcoming Brave and the Bold ongoing title for DC Comics, he's been churning out amazingly detailed covers for the Infinite Crisis.

But fans are lucky -- Perez does sit still for a little while when he's at comic book conventions, and he's got quite a few of them on his schedule for this summer. So, as he worked on one of over 50 sketches he completed at this past weekend's Pittsburgh Comic-Con, Newsarama had a quick chat with Perez to get the inside scoop on his latest work and a few more details about what he's doing next.

Newsarama: So it's finally happening? Months after it was announced that Mark Waid was writing a Brave and the Bold ongoing for DC with you as penciller, you're finally working on the series?
George Perez: Yes! I was supposed to start in November, but because of Infinite Crisis and JSA, and Mark being caught up in 52, it got delayed more and more. But I'm starting on the first issue, and it looks like a lot of fun. The first teaming up is Batman and Green Lantern -- in Vegas! So I've got to keep freeze-framing CSI" I believe, from what I gather, Supergirl will probably be the next character that's spotlighted.

    by Vaneta Rogers

At this weekend's 13th annual Pittsburgh Comicon at the Monroeville ExpoMart, the floor buzz seemed to concentrate on a variety of new mini-series spinning out of the year's big events at DC and Marvel.

    (excerpt)

George Perez is finally working on pencils for the new Brave and the Bold title for DC Comics, a series that was announced almost a year ago. Delayed because of the artist's work on the Infinite Crisis mini-series and writer Mark Waid's involvement in the weekly series 52, the series seems to be back on track now. Perez said he's gotten the first script, and it features a Batman and Green Lantern team-up.

"Mark has found an ingenious way of doing the old formula but working within the climate where everything has to be considered for trades," Perez explained. "I think people will really enjoy it."

Mark Waid: “We Got Both Kinds, The Brave and The Bold”
    Tuesday, March 14

    (excerpt)J

B: Which current DCH hero could hold a permanent team-up book spot?

MW: Batman, obviously, though plans aren't currently for him to hold down a permanent B&B slot--I want more variety. Still, that might change. Green Lantern could probably also carry a team-up book. Superman MAYBE--but after, that, not many other characters are that versatile.

JB: Lastly, and I’ll try not to make it a completely stupid question: Why George Perez on the new B&B?

MW: Because there's still three or four DCU heroes that madman hasn't yet drawn. And we'll get to 'em all. Besides, it's George--it's gonna be amazing looking. Can't wait!

JB: Thanks, Mark. I’ll be looking forward to the first issue of the new BRAVE & BOLD, as will quite a few other fanboys, I’m sure.

NYCC: DCU - BETTER THAN EVER PANEL
    02-25-2006 02:13 AM

DC Comics held their second panel of the con day, DCU: Better Than Ever in another"standing room only" program, and Newsarama was on hand (where else would we be)?

Moderated by Bob Wayne, panelists included Dan Didio, Paul Levitz, Adam Kubert, Joan Hilty, Jesus Saiz, Daniel Acuna, Al Barrianuevo, Geoff Johns, and Andy Kubert, who were joined by Brad Meltzer.

The panel started with Paul Levitz explaining that originally, he tossed the idea of a “52" weekly series out almost as a joke, a riff on Fox’s 24 that Didio, Geoff Johns, and others took seriously and ran with.

    (excerpt)

Didio confirmed that Teen Titans: Games has been put on indefinite hold, as George Perez had announced recently on his website, saying they felt Perez would be better suited to launch the upcoming Brave & Bold series to be written by Mark Waid.

INFINITE CRISIS #5 (Perez Cover) (Mar 2006) RED SONJA (Dynamic Forces) (2005)
    JSA #86 (Jun 2006)
Well, it's time for an all-too-infrequent update on what's going on at the International House of Pérez. I've read quite a number of posts on various message boards asking such things as"When will George be starting on THE BRAVE & THE BOLD?", "Will GAMES: THE TITANS GRAPHIC NOVEL ever come out?", "Is he working on the DC character turn-arounds for DC's official bible?" "Will that art be made available to the buying public?"

Well here are some answers, a few unfortunately vague because, quite truthfully, I'm not sure of the answers myself.

DC's big event books have really put a major monkey wrench in the production of the monthly books (not to mention some of the event books themselves). Because of my involvement in INFINITE CRISIS, which seems to grow with every issue, I've not been available to start anything on B & B except for the first issue's cover, which was done months ago in anticipation of my starting the actual title in November of 2005. That cover was supposed to appear in the WIZARD issue announcing DC's 2006 schedule of new titles. It was yanked when it became obvious that I could not start the book until after my return from vacation in late January so the release schedule was still undetermined. That vacation, planned over a year ago as a partial celebration of Carol's and my 25th Wedding Anniversary, also explains why I will have no interior art in IC #5. Upon my return I learned that Mark Waid, now heavily immersed in writing his share of 52, had not been able to work on B &B during my absence and will likely not be able to do so for a couple of months. I'm not hurting for work, however, as there are plenty of pages to draw for IC 6 & 7, far more than I had imagined when I agreed to help out on the project. INFINITE CRISIS' schedule overrules all others for the next two months. That includes B &B and any art for the DC Bible.

As for the character art for the DC Bible (not its official name, by the way), I really have no idea whether it will appear in a published format, although I think it would be cool if I do a good enough job to warrant such a publication. Lord knows the royalties would be nice. But, until I can actually start on drawing them the subject's rather moot.

The official status of GAMES is a bit more tricky. With all the post-IC work I have lined up, I don't see how I will have the time to get back on the graphic novel. Quite honestly, and honesty can be quite brutal, I wouldn't hold my breath on it ever being released. I know that my wonderful friend and co-creator Marv Wolfman is still guardedly optimistic on the resurrection of this project (a lot of that positive thinking having been fueled by me two years ago when I stated my intent to complete the art), but my subsequent exclusive contract with DC has prompted the company to utilize my talents on more current projects aimed at forming DC's future rather than just basking in the nostalgia of its past. The completed art in GAMES is over 15 years old, although it does hold up pretty damn well, in my opinion. I guess it could conceivably be restarted yet again, but it seems to become more unlikely with each new DC assignment in each passing new year. For that, I am sincerely sorry-- For Marv, for inker Mike Perkins who signed a Marvel exclusive since inking ten of the un-inked pages, for Al Vey, who had inked the earlier pages over a decade ago, for color artist Tom Smith, for the fans who have waited so long and whose hopes may be dashed yet again-- and, finally, for me. It would have been nice to put closure to the project. Oh, and for those who suggested that some other artist or artists finish the project, I suggested the same thing years ago. Unfortunately, DC only wanted this as a Wolfman/Pérez Titans story; so, without me, it's not getting done. An unfortunate Catch-22, I'm afraid. Still, there is always that small glimmer of hope. After all, what if I'm done with all my IC stuff and there's still no B & B work ready? You never know.

I do have some non-IC work down the pipe, mostly covers. I still have two more JSA covers to draw and I've drawn a RED SONJA cover for Dynamite Comics (part of an agreement that pre-dated my DC exclusive) and still have a few covers to draw for that company. There's also the cover for the final collection of my WONDER WOMAN work. I've been approached by Wildstorm for a cover, but I haven't followed up on that yet.

I am grateful that there are so many fans out there for which my continuing output seems to actually matter. Thanks for the support, the kind words, and even the critiques. Despite illnesses and setbacks, I'm thankful for the loyalty and affection of my fans. Along with the love and support of my wife, family and friends, it's what gives me the drive to get up in the morning and face that drawing board and peer into the snow-white blankness of the page-- and make my mark.

Boston is a great town with amazing restaurants, nightlife, and a lot of cute girls out to party in between classes. Throw in a Wizard World comic convention and it turns into Shangri-La for any young fanboy. I personally had a blast and plan on being back next year.

A few choice tidbits overheard on the con floor:

    * Chris Batista will pencil a 3 issue arc on Hawkman that ties in directly to Infinite Crisis (specifically the Rann-Thanagar war).
    * George Perez will be pencilling one of the Superman titles next year.
    * Howard Chaykin is working on a Green Lantern story.
    * Walter Simonson is working on an issue of Solo.
    * Andy Diggle will be part of the DC panel at Brighton. Expect some sort of announcement at that time. Bob Wayne mentioned that Diggle has more DCU and Vertigo work coming out next year.
    * The new Blade television series will have a lot of big name comic book creators involved on different levels. Expect to see a lot of familiar names in the credits.
