Avengers Finale #1
*** (3 stars)
by Ian M Feller
With the Avengers in turmoil after the breakdown of the Scarlet Witch that killed Hawkeye, the Vision and Ant-Man and destroyed the mansion. The Avengers meet for one last time to discuss their future and reminisce. Tony Stark announces his Stark Industries can no longer fund the team nor will the repair the damager done to the mansion and has decided to leave it as a memorial.
What makes this issue truly special is the artistic line-up. Fourteen different pencillers are included, each one drawing a few pages. Alex Maleev, Steve Epting, Eric Powell, David Mack, Jim Cheung, Steve McNiven, and George Perez provide their skills. Some draw sequential story pages, while others draw specific scenes from Avengers history: the formation of the team, finding Captain America, the Kree-Skrull War, and more.
As the last two pages of this issue demonstrate, Avengers members make up one of the most beloved teams in comics, and this issue is a testament to that popularity. Now on the next phrase of the story.

I remember one of the first comics I ever read was Crisis On Infinite
Earths. While it took me several years before I understood why there were like 2
Supermen, 2 Flash, Two Green Lanterns...etc, I remember loving the art. Mr
Perez, you are my absolute favorite artist. I can't express how much joy I have
gotten from reading books drawn and written by you. Some of my favorites was the
before mentioned Crisis, the 1986 Wonder Woman revival, and The Hulk - Future
Imperfect. I thank you for bringing me such joy and inspiring me to persue my
own art interests.

It's pretty obvious what you guys wanna do here... Jumpstart the Avengers with a dynamic and a more popular group of characters. SuperHeroes who have long made names for themselves and that most of whom star in their own monthly books. Just like DC's JLA. Out of seven of it core members, six have their regular series. Whereas the Avengers only has three. But now, it's down to two. Namely Captain America and Iron Man. It's very unfortunate that even The Mighty Thor got cancelled. He and his Asgardian family will be missed...
As for the rest: Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Wasp, Hank Pym, Vision, WarBird, She-Hulk, WonderMan, Black Panther, Black Widow, Falcon, Hercules, Quasar, Namor, Sersi, Captain Britain, QuickSilver ... They're wonderful individuals. They look great as a whole. Apparently, they just don't have enough appeal to stand up on their own. Another problem I must state is the constant roster change. In times, strong members get replaced by second-raters (e.g. Dr. Druid, Gilgamesh). And these sucky players even have the nerve to call themselves Earth's Mightiest.

Sales Still Sliding on Top Comics
December 21, 2004
But Cover Prices Up
Sales were soft for most of the top comic titles this month, with five out of the top ten and 16 out of the top 25 dropping in sales. Only five of the top 25 comic titles managed to increase in sales between October and November.

The cover by Neal Adams looked a bit strange, but the interior art is an amazing collection of some of the best artists in the industry. Now most of the artists don’t really have much of a connection to the Avengers. Of the dozen-plus artists who worked on this issue, the only ones that I can remember working on the title are Steve Epting and George Pérez. However, I can’t deny that there are some wonderful looking pieces of art in this issue, as the moody art in the opening half of this issue does a great job of selling the downbeat nature of the material, and the second half of the issue is a delightful collection of images, as some of the best artists working today offer up their versions of classic Avenger action. From Gary Frank’s version of the Korvac saga, to Steve McNiven’s version of the “Ultron Unleashed” climax, the art alone was almost enough to earn this issue a recommendation. Plus, while it’s only six pages, George Pérez closes the book with a powerful reminder of why he’s the best artist to ever work on The Avengers.
Keith Dallas (2 1/2 Bullets)
My biggest complaint about Avengers Finale is that most of the artists used here have no ties to Avengers publishing history nor are they appropriate Avengers artists. In previous years Steve Epting and George Perez have, of course, made a substantial mark on The Avengers, but Alex Maleev? Lee Weeks? David Mack? They’re all good artists, but they’re not Avengers artists. Using them for an Avengers send-off makes as much sense as using John Romita Jr., Mark Bagley, and Howard Porter for a Legion of Super-Heroes send-off. Instead of using artists that Brian Michael Bendis favors, why not use artists who contributed to The Avengers over the years? A Neal Adams cover is fitting, but how about tapping Sal Buscema, Rich Buckler, Alan Davis, Oliver Coipel or Michael Golden for these two page splashes?

*SPOILERS*
(excerpt)
The Scarlet Witch has always been one of my favorite Avengers, probably because I grew up on George Perez’s and John Byrne’s curvy, voluptuous renditions of the mutant sorceress. Despite my fondness for Wanda, I’m not going to wail like a shrieking fan boy about how absolutely this character has been degraded. Truth be told, The Scarlet Witch is a third-tier character whose proper place in the Marvel Universe IS in Avengers mansion in a supporting role. For the most part, she’s remained a static character over the past 25 years. A 1990s Force Works make-over was a change in appearance only (and a quickly abandoned one).
If Marvel (and yes, I’ll hold several Marvel personnel responsible for this development because even if the idea was originally Bendis’s, it was approved by both Avengers editor Tom Brevoort and Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, otherwise it wouldn’t have been published; it’s not like Bendis stole the keys to the printing presses and locked himself in)… If Marvel wants to degrade a third-tier character, that’s fine. But the attempt to present this development as a natural, logical progression of The Scarlet Witch’s published history is laughable. As Dr. Strange floats above the Avengers explaining how unhinged Wanda has become and why this shouldn’t be unexpected, the Avengers stand in disbelief… and I read in disbelief. I don’t buy it. This is a desperately contrived development.

"Avengers Finale"
Sunday, November 07, 2004
written by Drew Sheneman
This past Wednesday Marvel wrapped up its big "Avengers Disassembled" event with a double-sized issue No. 503. If you're a faithful reader of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, you'll already know who was behind the murderous rampage -- besides writer Brian Bendis -- that tears the team apart. This Wednesday you'll have a chance to say your good-byes with "Avengers Finale."
This book serves as an epilogue to the epic-500 issue run of the current book, before Bendis and artist David Finch launch a revamped Avengers title this winter. Bendis has the surviving Avengers assemble one last time to lament the end of an era.
The creative lineup for the book boasts a roster of big-time artists. The list includes Marvel artists such as Jim Chueng, Steve Epting and Alex Maleev along with living legends like George Perez and Neal Adams.
"Avengers Finale" will serve as the bookend to the current era of the Avengers as Marvel prepares to launch a new line of Avengers books. Bendis and Finch will team on the new Avengers flagship, as mentioned before, and television writer Allan Heinberg of Fox's "The O.C." will pen a new "Young Avengers" title with artist Jim Chueng in the coming months.
"Avengers Finale" will be released this Wednesday. It's written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by a group of all-star artists to numerous to list here. The book is $3.50 and recommended for readers 12 and older.

While Bendis was talking about this Andrew Lis interrupted him to interject something which should thrill longtime Avengers fans. Lis said, "Isn't George Perez drawing the last chapter of this storyline?"
Bendis replied, "Yes and it's his first work since JLA/Avengers." Bendis was happy Perez is involved in the story. "This is him putting his own personal stamp on the very last chapter of the Avengers - that he was an architect in bringing back into the forefront of mainstream comics. Not only do we have George, but I've also gotten a bunch of my good friends to work on this. David Mack, Mike Oeming, Mike Gaydos, Alex Maleev, Steve McNiven, Steve Epting, Chynna Clugston-Majors, Jimmy Cheung, and some actual genuine surprises. We thought people are going to be very happy to hear this as the bedlam continues - we thought this chapter can really get into the characters one last time. We felt it was necessary for the story and necessary for the longtime readers of the Avengers. For those just jumping on to the story at Avengers # 500 also. We're thrilled that George agreed to be a part of it."

A FIRST LOOK AT A FINALE
09-20-2004 11:17 AM by Matt Brady
(excerpt)
As Bendis explained, this issue, not #503 is the final chapter of Disassembled. “This is the last part of the story. This is how the story ends.
“For those riding the wave of sheer chaos that this story has been so far, and are waiting for the heart, this is the heart. This is the emotional ending to a very tragic story. This is the very special last episode. The surviving avengers get together one last time to decide what the fate of the Avengers is and how they feel about it.”
And as for that creative team…Adams handled the cover, while the final chapter of the story is illustrated by Perez, and everyone else is in between, including Epting, Jim Cheung, Eric Powell, Darick Robertson, Mike Oeming, Alex Maleev, David Mack, and others.
“We got everyone that we did by a mixture of groveling by me, Tom Brevoort, and Andy Schmidt,” Bendis said. “Andy got Neal Adams, which was a shocker. Tom got George Perez, which was just incredible, because we felt that we needed both of them to make this a truly special Valentine, because that is what this is, it’s a Valentine to all that has come before us.

Avengers Last Cover???
Thursday, September 09, 2004 6:28:06 PM
What's next. Who's next to die?
And Who did they innocently ask to draw the memorial last cover?
Well Neal! Why? Hmmm. Don't know. What did he do so special?
A little experiment. Ya got big, little and tiny people. Suppose you line them up in perspective so that the heads of the smallest, medium, and largest people in the drawing appear the same size.
Oh-kay. If you do so, how do you differentiate between them to establish that they are the different sizes???
Lighting!
Lighting?
Well, the colorist is working on the lighting now. We'll tell you if it works.
Is it a good cover?
Mmmmmmmm could be.

DISA-BENDIS-SEMBLED: BRIAN BENDIS TALKS "AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED"
by Arune Singh, Staff Writer
Posted: September 10, 2004
Maybe you hate writer Brian Bendis' take on the Avengers in the current "Chaos" storyline running through Marvel Comics' "Avengers" series. Maybe you like it. But chances are if you haven't read it then you've heard the controversy.
(excerpt)
"Like everyone else, very early on in my life, I got hooked on the tales of the Avengers, these heroes coming together and doing the things that no one hero could do by themselves. It was all hypnotic- especially the Roy Thomas stuff because he made the big changes. Stan built up the stuff, but people remember the Avengers of Thomas' era, all the way through the Kree/Skrull war, the Roger Stern stuff, all of it. Even the David Micheline/Bob Hall stuff, it kind of had a dirty feel to it, kind of creepy, even that I liked.
"Are there times I didn't like the Avengers? Sure, but I've learned that it's not really my place to say and it's insulting to creators, some of whose work I like, but didn't like them on Avengers. The modern guy, Busiek/Perez were great and I love Geoff Johns' work. I think that the Kree/Skrull War is one of the best ideas ever executed in mainstream comics. Ever. No one even came close to it and I'm sure they got letters from people saying they hate it [laughs].
