Marvel 30¢ Variant Discovery On eBay
    Auctions/Prices, Scoop, Friday, January 20, 2006

    AVENGERS #148 (30 Cent Variant) (Jun 1976)
Classics Incorporated will be auctioning off over 100 issues of the Marvel 30 cent variants the end of January. These variant issues were recently discovered in an original owner collection assembled in San Antonio, TX with issues averaging in the CGC certified 9.0 to 9.4 range. These variants are notoriously scarce in nice condition with several of the issues being the highest graded copy on the CGC Census.

Marvel 30-cent variants were the test price versions of all the regular 25-cent titles that Marvel published from April to August 1976. Marvel raised the price of all their titles in six test markets to see what the resistance to a 5-cent price increase would be. All of the other regular Marvel titles have 30-cent variants, for a total of 186 possible variants. These variants were only distributed in six markets, and apparently not all outlets in those markets received all the variants. San Antonio was one of those price variant test markets.

For more information, visit Classics Incorporated for a complete listing of available books, scans, their ranking on the CGC Census, and a background on collecting variants. The comics will be listed in two groups on eBay starting the end of January. Please email any inquiries to Matt Nelson at comics[a]classicsincorporated.com.

    (excerpt)

Below is a complete list of all the 1976 Marvel comics which had 30 cent variant covers. Much of the information included was first gathered by Jon McClure, and was published in several issues of Comic Book Marketplace (which I highly recommend to all serious Golden, Silver, and Bronze age collectors). I've included not only every issue, but also the cover date, the style of the price blurb, the estimated degree of scarcity of each issue, and whether or not I need it to complete my set.

There is some uncertainty about the general frequency in which 30 cent variants occurred. Some have estimated that up to 5% of an issue were variants, while others have contended that only 1% or less were. The reality is that there is probably not a set percentage across titles, or even across issues within a title....

(NOTE: Only Perez-related titles are listed here.)
