From F Jackie and Morrissey-Solo
I listened to the Mark Harris interview and wrote down all the mentions Mark made of Morrissey. Mark Harris mentioned Morrissey a total of 3 times on the air. First he was playing the game "Who Wants To Be A Turkish Millionaire". This is Howard's spoof of the TV show where he asks retarded questions to various weirdos. Of course a Turkish Million is equal to about five US cents. About two minutes into the game there was a question having to do with the gay band "10-CC".

Howard: .."..thats how the band 10-CC got their name, remember them?"
Mark: "I don't even know this band Morrissey who keeps calling me."
Robin: "Oh God, will you just answer the questions.."
Howard proceeded with the game.

Then about midway through his 45 minute appearance, Mark was taking calls from various people calling in calling him a homo, and various other names and out of nowhere Mark just mention Morrissey again, and again it was in the context of Morrissey as a band. Howard pretty much ignored him.

Mark: "Do you think it would be a good for me to do a singing spot with this group Morrissey?"
Howard: "(sigh), No..John, you're on the air.."

Then onto another caller to bash Mark

At the end of his appearance...Mark was giving a few plugs about his various appearances.

Howard: "..well I'm happy for you about your Caroline's appearance, when do you plan to tell Caroline about it?"
Mark: "show already knows.."
Mark: "and in Vegas..Morrissey..at the House Of Blues.."
Howard: "When is that?"
Mark: "I have to look, I'm getting old... December 19th and 20th and at the Palladium on December 15th and 16th with Boz Boorer, Alain Whyte, Spike Smith on Drums.."

Howard cuts Mark off after he mentions Spike and simply said "Alright that sounds good". It seemed like Mark had more he wanted to say (mention Gary perhaps?), but Howard wanted to end the segment and needed to break for commercials. While Mark was giving the dates Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling said "what's that all about" in the background, but Mark didn't respond to him. Mark then left.

Louise Wener on Morrissey:

"I'm a big fan of Morrissey's. He's great at taking a small detail in life and recognizing that it means so much more. Those day-to-day bits and pieces dominate a relationship, especially the ugly little asides -- when it's not actually ending, but it's beginning to break down. When it's getting filthy and unpleasant. I spent a lot of time in that period of a relationship, so it dominated my thoughts for a while."

As expected the first single from their upcoming album, The Battle of Los Angeles, is a fierce rap-metal hybrid with muscular guitar riffs and lots of yelling. Less expected: An intro oddly reminiscent of the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" and a call-to-arms coda complete with harmonica and a galvanizing 'Can't stop us now!" refrain. You'd be crazy to even try. Paddy English man
Saturday, November 20, 1999

With The Smiths, he was a member of the best pop band since The Beatles. As a solo artist, he continues to inspire extreme dedication - and extreme criticism. In a rare interview, Morrissey talks for the first time, to Brian Boyd, about his brutal education, how his Irishness shaped him, his brutal education and why he's not leaving the pop stage

Morrissey on stage in Dublin during his 1995 tour: 'As long as I can do it without looking too dreadful, I will want to do it.'

Photograph: Terry Thorpe

How steeped was he in that emigrant Irish culture, which is a strange one at the best of times? "It steeped into everything I knew growing up. I was very aware of being Irish and we were told that we were quite separate from the scruffy kids around us - we were different to them. In many ways, though, I think I had the best of both places and the best of both countries. I'm `one of us' on both sides. It was always odd later on with The Smiths when I was described as being `extremely English' because other people would tell me that I looked Irish, I sounded Irish and had other tell-tale signs. In fact, the new album - which I have finished writing but has yet to be recorded, is called Irish Blood, English Heart. It's funny, because U2 are always portrayed as being famously Irish and this is the great unsaid: aren't half the band English? All you have to do is hear The Smiths' surnames - Maher, Morrissey, Joyce and Rourke. It was only actually Andy Rourke's mother who was an English parent - all the other parents were Irish. It's an interesting story."

Morrissey still a bitter boy
Morrissey
Rating:
by Max Bell

Rather like Oscar Wilde, Morrissey arrived in London with nothing to declare except his genius. He's not overburdened with a recording contract, the law of diminishing returns decreeing that Eighties pop stars are left in the lurch. But he still has a high-powered manager (Elliot Roberts, of Neil Young fame) and a loyal audience.

To say that Morrissey embraces anachronism is hardly front page news (when didn't he?), but maybe it's time to bury the hatchet, not necessarily in the neck of the beastly boys in the British music Press. Moz has always carried a grudge with aplomb and he did here, during Boy Racer, a thinly-veiled bash at modern pop folk like Damon Albarn, perhaps?

He's also assembled a quiff-heavy rockabilly cast who perm his invective to its illogical conclusion. Is It Really So Strange? was an odd Smiths cover when Meat Is Murder lay in waiting, but the man in the West Ham Boys' Club shirt was too hard for the Chicken Run.

The detail contained the pleasantries - red drapes, the Billy Fury meets New York Dolls iconography, the mike-whipping sadism. As far as Morrissey is concerned, all of Britain can die from BSE, and stuff the gladioli where the sun don't shine.

BLUR BAG BRAGG
Blur South Bank Show special this weekend - 18 November 1999

BLUR get the heavyweight arts flagship slot previously accorded such greats as UB40 though, more seriously, Damon claims in the programme that The South Bank Show's documentary on The Smiths inspired him to form a band. "I was round at Graham's house," he recalls, "and I remember thinking, 'No-one is going to tell me that pop music is finished'."

Let's hope this hour has some similar effect. Focused on the pre-Reading warm-up show at Goldsmith's College, there's plenty of 'candid' interviews, a guide to Colchester from Damon (this week: Essex lad, again) and, most attractively, a peek into Alex's social life.

But wait a minute: didn't The Smiths split up soon after their South Bank Show?

Morrissey tackles David Bowie
Mister "knows it all and better", Morrissey, has been quoted saying that David Bowie is obsessed by his career. According to Mozz, Bowie is nothing less than a firm, a company run by smart people. "Bowie wouldn't even phone his mum without having considered the possible side-effects of this on his career," according to the singer. Morrissey also revealed that he left David Bowie's 96 tour because Bowie's behaviour was putting Morrissey under a lot of pressure.

Yet all its says about Morrissey is: "Anchored by the campy musings of Morrissey" and "Morrissey Delivers a show-stopper." Darn myself for not going, Darn!

So having to find out about this and looking at the picture of morrissey for about 20 minutes straight and running into people and walls and chairs, i had to go back and grab more. I have about 5 at the moment. I am planning to get more soon.

There is a small bit about Mike Joyce in the December issue of Alternative Press - it seems he's got a website (mildly amusing) and according to the magazine "Joyce holds no grudges and is keen on a one-night reunion." He says "It wouldn't bother me, to tell the truth. A one-off gig would be nice."

Also, the little (tiny, tiny) mention of Morrissey in Rolling Stone's [ November 25, 1999 ] review of Coachella was so full of errors. It even went far enough to say he was wearing a blue suit and then show a picture of him clearly in a brown jacket. :P Not to mention the picture was beyond weird (though I liked it) and didn't even show his face. (And even though this is unrelated, the purple shirt Beck is wearing in the picture on the same page is the ugliest shirt anyone has ever worn - just thought I'd mention that!)

The article from Moz-solo:

"...The sky was fading to black and so was the crowd. Morrissey was on theri minds, and no one --- save the kids flipping out to the Breakbeat Era with Roni Size --- was about to miss his first U.S. outing in years. Dressed in a sharp blue suit, Morrissey flung his mike and grabbed a guitar for an uncharacteristically rocking set that included moody Smiths hits like 'Meat is Murder,' which for many was itself worth the fifty-dollar admission. 'Are you having a good time?' he asked, to wild applause. 'Too bad.'"

SO NEAR, SO MARR

A spokesman for Oasis denied that Johnny Marr was ever in the frame to replace Bonehead and said he 'couldn't understand' why Bernard Sumner had said it.

BERNARD SUMNER was speaking to Radio 1 to say that his partner in Electronic ex-Smith Johnny Marr was approached to replace Bonehead in Oasis.

"We've known Noel for a long time, he's a good friend," said the New Order/Electronic frontman. "He did approach Johnny, I believe, to be a guitarist in Oasis. But Johnny's working on stuff of his own, solo projects and I think he wants to pursue that and finish that really. I think the timing was just bad. He can't play guitar good enough!"

Meanwhile the new lineup are rehearsing and will play US dates in December.

"The plan is, depending on whether people still like us or not, 'coz we've been away for two years, I want to do small venues," Liam told Radio 1 last week. "If everything's alright and the kids still like us then we're gonna fill out big shows. Our first one I wanna do like a little tour around London, of little, small gigs, two thousand, so we can get back in there, bring the new people in the band in and away we go".

The shows confirmed so far are in Philadelphia (December 3) and Chicago (4). They are radio station gigs with all the bands playing short sets.

I am working part time for a publishing house and there [ are ] news that could interest you, I thought.

We are working on a project involving Morrissey, somehow. It's an anthology of "pop music" lyricists of the XXth century (mostly second half). It will include approximately 400 texts. We have already chosen some of the lyricists : Chuck Berry, Morrissey, Boris Vian, Brel, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Brassens, Serge Gainsbourg, Patti Smith, etcoetera...

Which means we already have Lyricists from France, England, the USA, Canada, Belgium etc... You can help me in two ways.

A. I must propose a selection of texts from Morrissey I think two or three texts only wil make it to the anthology if we are given the right to publish them obviously.

B. We want to find lyricists from other countries that the one mentionned above... Are there some lyricists, who achieved some fame (the idea which gave birth to this anthology is : These lyrics have touched a lot of people because of their qualities, so they should be printed to show what "writing lyrics" meant in the second half of the twentieth century, and why it became so popular) in other countries and that you know of ?

Why Johnny Marr knocked back Oasis

Oasis Who would be mad enough to turn down the job as guitarist with Oasis? Well one legendary axeman turned down Noel and Liam, because their new guitarist Gem, wasn't their first choice. Apparently, despite Noel's denials, the band did approach former Smiths and Electronic guitarist Johnny Marr but got knocked back.

Bernard Sumner, frontman of Electronic, revealed all to Radio 1: "We’ve known Noel for a long time, he’s a good friend. He did approach Johnny, I believe, to be a guitarist in Oasis. But Johnny’s working on stuff of his own, solo projects and I think he wants to pursue that and finish that really. I think the timing was just bad. He can’t play guitar good enough!" he said.

Staff at Ashworth secure hospital on Merseyside have begun force feeding Moors murderer Ian Brady, a month into his hunger strike.

Brady, who has served more than 30 years in jail and psychiatric hospital for his crimes, says his human rights are being infringed.

He began his hunger strike as a protest against conditions in the hospital after he was moved to a high security wing, following a review on 30 September.

His solicitor Robin Makin told BBC News 24 that Brady wanted to take legal action against a potential breach of human rights.

Brady says he believes efforts are being made to "punish" him over his complaints about the hospital, and claims visits from friends are being blocked.

"They are systematically isolating me from the outside world," he says.

Brady was jailed for life in 1966 with accomplice Myra Hindley, for the murders of children Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans.

He received a concurrent life sentence for murdering 12-year-old John Kilbride.

The pair later confessed to the killings of Pauline Reade, 16, and 12-year-old Keith Bennett burying their bodies on Saddleworth Moor, on the edge of the Peak District overlooking Manchester.

Bragg: Still packing a political punch Best known as a political songwriter, Bragg has always been just as sharp when writing about relationships, and one of the highlights here is a sparkling version of one his finest love songs, Greetings To The New Brunette.

Re-named Shirley, it features a multi-instrumental contribution from Johnny Marr, one of several appearances by the former Smiths member.

Later on Billy repays the compliment with a solo rendition of Jeane, a great Morrissey-Marr song which appeared on one of The Smiths' early B-sides but somehow got lost in the flood of brilliance that followed.

Morrissey: Meat Still Murder
Morrissey canceled the second show of his brief fall tour earlier this week (an engagement at the House of Blues in Las Vegas was called off at the last minute, earlier this month when one of the former Smiths vocalist's band members took ill). Rumor has it the Mozzer became outraged when someone had the good sense to translate the name of the Dresden, Germany venue which was to host them on October 18. Seems "Schlachthof" translates as er...slaughterhouse...as in the place where they kill "beautiful creatures" so that vulgar carnivores can "savor the flavor of murder" (to quote The Smiths most famous vegetarian screed, 1984's" Meat is Murder"). According to the NME, and other UK fan sites, this was too much for the sensitive icon to bare, despite the fact that the venue had long since been converted.

JOHNNY MARR TURNED DOWN OASIS JOB
Electronic frontman Bernard Sumner has revealed that, despite Noel Gallagher's denials, Johnny Marr was asked to join Oasis as a replacement for departed guitarist Bonehead. Press reports emerged following Bonehead's departure that suggested Noel had asked close friend and legendary guitarist Johnny Marr to take the job but, at the time, he denied this.

However, in an interview with UK radio, Bernard Sumner said: "We've known Noel for a long time, he's a good friend. He did approach Johnny, I believe, to be a guitarist in Oasis. SLAUGHTERHOUSE JIVE

MORRISSEY pulled a gig in Germany last week because it was scheduled to take place in a converted slaughterhouse.

Staunch vegetarian Morrissey was due to play Dresden Slaughterhouse on October 18, but pulled out hours before he was set to go onstage.

The official reason given was that the layout of the venue made it impossible to play.

Morrissey's agent Mike Hinc told NME: "There was no direct access to the stage, we couldn't put our lights up and it was just the wrong shape. It just couldn't be done."

However, NME understands the cancellation occurred because Morrissey only realised the venue was a converted slaughterhouse when he arrived.

A source told NME that because of his anti-meat and animal rights beliefs he became increasingly squeamish about the gig and eventually refused to play.

Coincidentally, the former Smiths singer has reintroduced 'Meat Is Murder' into his current live show.

It is not thought that the gig in Dresden will be rescheduled.

Meanwhile, Morrissey has added a fourth date at the London Kentish Town Forum on November 13 with support from Mexican Elvis impersonator El Vez.

Morrissey's UK gig kicks off on November 9 at Nottingham Rock City and continues until December 6 where it concludes at Aylesbury Civic Hall.

MORRISSEY refused to play a gig in Germany last week because it was booked to take place in a converted slaughterhouse.

Devout vegetarian Morrissey refused to perform at the aptly named Dresden Slaughterhouse on October 18, pulling out hours before he was due onstage.

The former Smiths singer's agent Mike Hinc told British music magazine NME that the reason for the cancellation was because of the layout of the venue. He said: "There was no direct access to the stage, we couldn't put our lights up and it was just the wrong shape. It just couldn't be done".

The NME however, understands that Morrissey cancelled because he only realised the venue was a converted slaughterhouse when he arrived and became increasingly squeamish about the gig until he finally decided not to play.

One out of every three or four fans on day one were sporting Morrissey or Smiths T-shirts. Although Beck was the event's headliner, the Mozzer, who canceled his rare engagement at the House of Blues in Las Vegas just two days earlier, was the hands down crowd favorite.

photo: Victoria Morrissey: He may not eat meat, but he's a beefcake
As the sun began to set, the tents and concession stands emptied, and the field in front of the main stage filled with eager, loyal fans (a large percentage of which were representing the Mozzer's sizeable Chicano following; quiffed hair, cuffed blue jeans, classic cars out in the massive lot). Up until the moment DJ Liquid Todd put away his vinyl after warming up the main stage (a smart between set novelty that helped quell crowd tension and impatience) and the lights turned a dramatic blue, it was unclear whether or not Morrissey would play at all. When he finally took the stage, the 40-year old icon didn't disappoint his worshippers despite a muddy sound system and the absence of former creative partner Johnny Marr, who was rumored to be at the show as part of Beck's band. Despite Marr's absence, Morrissey resurrected three Smiths classics (by far the most he's ever performed solo), "Is It Really So Strange," "Meat is Murder," and the encore "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me."

Dresden is officially cancelled [ Dresden Schlachthof, Germany - 18 Oct 99 ]

Dresden tickets will be honored at Leipzig show which the Dresden venue people said was the next show. So where does that leave Berlin???

The reason given by venue people for the cancellation was that Morrissey was sick

Tina from Germany was told that he didn't want to play a slaughterhouse.

Our guesses as to the reason: not enough tickets were sold for tonight, he didn't want to play a slaughterhouse, production problems. Who knows? It was time to "pull a Morrissey"?

Also, the production people had been at the venue at 7 to set up, but had packed everything up and left by 11 and gone back to the hotel.

Yet his rabid contingent still found plenty to savor in an impressive and unusual set that ranged from album tracks to Smiths nuggets.

Among the highlights were a fierce "Meat is Murder," led by Boz Boorer's echo-laden guitarwork; Morrissey's added vocal flourishes on "Hairdresser on Fire"; his highly dramatic gestures during "November Spawned a Monster" and a charged-up, rollicking "Is It Really So Strange?"

Unfortunately, the annoying ritual where fans clamor onstage to touch or hug Morrissey continued. Five of them (mostly male) succeeded and one idiot almost strangled the singer before getting hauled away by security. Morrissey capped things off with an enthralling "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me."

Fans excited over singer's visit to Coachella Valley

By Mark Armstrong
The Desert Sun
Sept. 14, 1999

Indio might seem an unlikely place to see a sexually ambiguous crooner singing lyrics evoking images of a dreary London club rather than a hot, dry Coachella Valley afternoon.

But the many local fans of the English singer, Morrissey, say the desert is a "very Morrissey" place.

"It's a far cry from the London he sings about, but he loves old-school glamour and the old mystique," said 22-year-old David Gudelunas, a self-professed Morrissey fan since he was in junior high school. "And since the Palm Springs area is back in vogue now, it makes a lot of sense, in a weird sort of way."

Seventeen years after Morrissey broke into London's New Wave underground and formed a moody pop quartet called The Smiths, the man whose vocals graced such songs as "How Soon is Now?" and "Girlfriend in a Coma" remains an unlikely -- and unique -- hero for a generation of music fans here and abroad.

Which is why fans say Morrissey's upcoming performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival makes perfect sense.

"He's a cult figure for people in my generation," said Gudelunas, "and I think he has that drawing power, that literary mystique about him."

Despite recently losing an ugly legal battle with former bandmates over royalties -- and getting dropped from his record label -- throngs of his dedicated followers are still expected to converge on the Empire Polo Club grounds Oct. 9 for his performance at the Coachella Valley festival.

For longtime fans in the valley, the thought of seeing him here seems as surreal as his music.

Gudelunas, a former Palm Desert resident studying at the University of Pennsylvania, said he has been heckled by his friends for months because he won't be able to return to California to see the singer perform near his hometown.

"It's one of the best things to roll through the desert in 100 years ... and I'm not going to be there for it," he lamented.

Dedication: During the 1980s, The Smiths had seven top-10 albums -- including "The Queen is Dead" and "Meat is Murder" -- as well as 16 top-30 singles in the United Kingdom, on the Rough Trade label. Since the band broke up in 1987, Morrissey's solo work has continued to draw a dedicated group of listeners -- including many who are now in their early- to mid-20s.

"I think the first tape I ever got from my sister was The Smiths," said Adam Sandoval, 18, a student at College of the Desert. "I liked the music, the lyrics, and I guess he just sings about what's right for himself and not really for anybody else."

And while solo albums such as 1992's "Your Arsenal" and 1994's "Vauxhall And I" were well-received by his fans -- reaching No. 21 and No. 18, respectively, on the Billboard charts -- Morrissey has never achieved widespread success in the United States. His personality remains a topic of conversation. The singer-songwriter preaches a vegan lifestyle and has shunned a sexual identity.

"People say he's gay, or he's asexual," Sandoval said. "But it's the music I like him for."

Admiration: Gerard Grey, a 23-year-old Palm Desert resident, said his one-time obsession with Morrissey in high school has now evolved into a casual admiration. But when he was 15 years old and first listening to Morrissey's music -- along with other groups such as the Cure and New Order -- Grey said the songs spoke to him.

"It's poppy, but if you listen to the lyrics, it's real melancholy and depressing," he said. "I think it's just something that has to do with the music ... you can listen to it forever and it doesn't get boring."

For die-hard fans, the upcoming Morrissey show also has been shrouded in rumors regarding a possible reunion with former Smiths guitarist and co-founder, Johnny Marr. While fans' Web sites continue to speculate, recent newspaper interviews with both Morrissey and Marr suggest that neither are interested.

Still, Gudelunas can't help but wonder.

"It's amazing how my friends all over the country are talking about this show and the possibilities of them getting together," he said. "It would be nice if it happened at my home base."

Exclusive report from Johnny Marr
Yesterday Johnny Marr (Electronic and ex-Smiths) told Side-Line exclusively, that the recordings for his solo-album are going quite well, we quote "I have an amazing new band: Healers, and we're half-way through the first album" though he also said "I'm recording every waking hour, no exageration." Marr has not decided on a record company yet. Marr: "I can't say I like any of 'em that much. Gotta like who I'm working with you know." Marr ended by saying that the track he recorded with Beck is called "Milk and Honey" and not "The Doctor" as reported in the U.K press for his next album.

Ed O'Brien, of Radiohead, mentioned the Smiths in his online diary.

From Greenplastic
When TNT imploded, Thom offered Colin the chance to play bass in a band he was forming with the tall, handsome chap in the year above who looked a bit like Morrissey: Ed O'Brien. A sixth-former, who looked nothing like Morrissey but had a drum kit, was also asked to join. Thom's first words to Phil Selway were mementous: "Can't you play a bit faster?"

'knives out' sounding quite 'smiths-esque'. especially phil who has got that mike joyce thing down to a tee. on to 'optimistic' -must record that soon before we lose it (remember 'lift'?). 'up on the ladder' sounds pretty grim. 'say the word' (or c-minor song); great drum, bass and vocals - personally getting a bit anxious over it, as i can't find anything that works with it, or rather i have an idea but can't get the sound right. makes me a bit neurotic. finish on what i used to call the 'jonny scott walker song' - very short and sweet.
last diary piece for a couple of weeks. how was it for you? i'm finding it a little difficult to set the right tone, but as i'm not a journo i guess that's fair enough. hopefully this is going to be an ongoing thing throughout recording and maybe even touring, so it will get better.

From Quynh. (Obviously my sister isn't a big Smiths fan, so here are some corrections...)
As told to me by my sister: Craig Kilborn (a Minnesotian !) and Janeane Garofalo were fans of The Smiths. The show was filmed on 17 May 1999 [ The Janeane Garofalo Information Page ], but aired on Wednesday, September 23 [ from Joey Hollywood ]. On Kilborn's The Late Late Show (the show after Letterman's The Late Show), and gueststar Janeane talked about the Smiths.

From Eric Reidar from Moz-solo Board

just to clarify a few things... d Craig Kilborn had asked the audience to say to Jeanene "craig love's you" when he played HIS favourite smiths' song. When Jeanene was out there he did it and she mentioned how much she liked the smiths but accidentally referred to the song as "Sweetness" and Craig corrected her saying it was "Bigmouth Strikes again" and she mentioned how her favourite smiths' song was "how soon is now" and did mention the stuff about her being a fat goth girl in college with a lunchbox for a purse! anyway it was cool no matter how you recall it.

From Padraig Finnerty
I started Jonathan Coe's book 'The Dwarves of Death' today, imagine my surprise (and delight) when I saw the following in the credits

"And thanks, finally, to Warner Chappell Music Ltd. for their permission to quote from the following songs: 'This Night Has Opened My Eyes', 'Girlfriend In A Coma', 'Girl Afraid', 'I Know It's Over', 'Alsatian Cousin', 'Panic', 'I Don't Owe You Anything', 'London', 'Miserable Lie', 'Well I Wonder', 'William It Was Really Nothing'. The epigraphs in this book are reproduced by kind permission of Warner Chappell Music Ltd. Words and music: Morrissey and Johnny Marr © Morrissey and Marr songs Ltd."

The book has a musical theme, and each chapter has a Morrissey quote as it's epigraph. I'll list out the chapter titles and their epigraphs. Each quote has "Morrissey" (not "The Smiths") under it, and the song title, which you'll all know so I won't bother naming them.

Intro
this night has opened my eyes
and I will never sleep again
Theme One
Boy Afraid
prudence never pays
and everything she wants costs money
Theme Two
loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(although she needs you
more than she loves you)
Middle Eight
Were you and he Lovers?
and would you say so if you were?
Interlude
Panic on the streets of London...
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
Solo
did I really walk all this way
just to hear you say
'oh I don't want to go out tonight'
Turnaround
you left your girlfriend on the platform
with this really ragged notion that you'd return
but she knows that when he goes
he really goes
Key Change
So, goodbye
please stay with your own kind
and I'll stay with mine
Coda
Gasping - but somehow still alive
this is the fierce last stand of all I am
Fade
and everybody's got to live their life
and God knows I've got to live mine
God knows I've got to live mine
I can't recommend this book cos I haven't finished it yet, but I can absolutely recommend any (and all) of Jonathan Coe's other books, 'The Accidental Woman', 'A Touch Of Love', 'What a Carve Up!' and 'The House of Sleep', each of which are fantastic.

Morrissey "Wants To Sing": Boz Boorer Speaks Of Forthcoming UK Tour
Fri Sep 17 1999 19:00 BST
Following the recent news of MORRISSEY's November tour of the UK, comes a press release issued by the the former Smiths frontman's guitarist Boz Boorer and agent Elliot Roberts.

Boorer says "We're touring because Morrissey wants to sing and we want to play. It's true there is no record label but none of the record labels in the past have ever supported a Morrissey tour. As a touring unit we've always been self-sufficient".

"Elliot Roberts (Neil Young's long time associate) is now managing Morrissey and he is looking for a new deal. We have a new drummer, Spike Smith and Gary Day, the original bass player is back in the line-up. And there will be quite a few songs in the set never performed live before".

Elliot meanwhile, is full of enthusiasm for his latest charge. "Next year is gonna be a big year for Morrissey. He's been very creative, he's been writing loads of new songs; there's gonna be a lot happening."

Los Angeles is apparently treating Mozzer well. The US source says he seemed in 'incredibly good spirits in light of his court battles with some of his former bandmates in the Smiths. He also seemed relieved and almost celebratory to be free of his ties to Mercury and is eager to start recording the new songs he has written'.

"I look back upon the Mercury experience as the worst time of my life," Morrissey said. Several publishers, record labels, and Internet companies have approached the singer/songwriter about recording and he is weighing up his options. His last studio album was 1997's 'Maladjusted', followed by last year's compilation of rarities and B-sides called 'My Early Burglary Years'.

Speaking about his home in LA where he's been living for two years he said "This house was built in 1931 by Clark Gable for Carole Lombard." The house was later the home of such other famous faces, including author F. Scott Fitzgerald, actor/director John Schlesinger and film producer Robert Stigwood. Meanwhile, he's been taking drives to Death Valley, San Diego and Mexico and claims he has developed a new-found fondness for pasta.

Since Gem (formerly of the band, Heavy Stereo) is joining Oasis, we can safely rule out that lame rumour about Johnny Marr or even Andy Rourke will be joining Oasis. This is old rumours and old news. Do not believe this. From BBC News
Marr 'set to join Oasis'
Wednesday, August 11, 1999 Published at 16:25 GMT 17:25 UK
Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is set to join Oasis, a London newspaper has reported.

The Evening Standard claims 36-year-old Marr has been in discussions with band leader Noel Gallagher about replacing Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, who announced on Monday he had left the group.

A spokeswoman for Oasis could not confirm or deny the story, which claims an official announcement is expected soon.

Bonehead said on Monday he had left the group to "concentrate on other things" in his life. Noel Gallagher told music paper NME this week he had, in fact, been out of the band since Monday.

The band are currently recording their new album - due for release next year - in London.

The Smiths, led by Marr and singer Morrissey were one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Since then, Marr has worked with a number of bands as well as his project with New Order's Bernard Sumner, Electronic.

He asked if I were going to see his shows. But of course! I told him "where ever you're going, I'm going your way." He laughed and dismissed my hyperbole. But I would be going to Phoenix, Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, and Coachella. He was surprised and asked, "How did you know about the show in Phoenix? Did you hear about it on the radio." I strenuously denied that the radio ever gave me any kind of useful tour information. He guessed the internet then.

The most innocuous thing I thought to ask was, "Why did you change the name of your tour to Oye Estaban!?" He explained that Reprise wanted the tour name to coincide with his dvd release. I clarified, "Oh, I was thinking that perhaps there was some controversy about naming it 'The Isle of Dogs tour'." He laughed and pooh-poohed that idea as if it were the silliest notion he'd ever heard.

Moz & Marr rumours cite reunion & tour
[Aug 26 1999 4:17PM]
Rumours abound that Morrissey and Johnny Marr may perform together for the first time since 1987 at the Coachella Festival in California on October 9. Morrissey is headlining at the event and Marr is believed to be planning an appearance with Beck, with whom he has been working. Marr has written two guitar parts for Beck’s next album which has fuelled predictions of a performance with the tousel-haired singer at Coachella.

Both are also planning new solo projects – Marr’s The Healers, slated for a February 2000 release, plus a follow up to 1997’s Maladjusted for Morrissey, title and release date to be announced. Morrissey is also in the process of putting to a DVD retrospective for US release to be called ¡Oye Esteban!, according to an unofficial Morrissey website. The DVD will contain a selection of vintage videos never before shown to the public. Among those that have been unearthed are Seasick, Yet Still Docked.

Yet another unconfirmed rumour puts Morrissey on tour in the UK later this year, but no British dates have been announced. There is however a schedule for an November / December Irish tour, which venues say has been provisionally booked and is being advertised, but which has not been given final confirmation. Those dates are as follows:

Wednesday November 24 Befast Ulster Hall
Thursday November 25 Derry Rialto
Saturday November 27 Cork Opera House
Sunday November 28 Limerick University
Wednesday December 1 Dublin National Concert Hall
Thursday December 2 Dublin National Concert Hall

MORRISSEY may resume working with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr if rumours from America are to be believed.

Both artists are in Los Angeles working on solo material. Also, Marr is believed to playing the Coachella Festival in California on October 9, at which Morrissey is headlining. The bill also features Beck, The Chemical Brothers, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Cornelius.

Since his arrival in LA, Marr has been working with Beck, including recording two guitar parts for his new album, due out in November.

Richard Blade of US radio station K-ROQ announced that Marr will be playing as a guitarist for Beck at Coachella, which would be the first time since The Smiths split in '87 that Morrissey and Marr have been on the same bill at a live event. Morrissey is to tour the UK later this year, his first performances since 1997; although this is yet to be officially confirmed.

The so-called 'Isle Of Dogs '99' tour will begin at Rock City in Nottingham on November 15, however when NME contacted the venue a spokesperson could not confirm that this had been finalised.

An October tour of Germany, however, takes place with dates in Hamburg (13), Bremen (16), Dresden (18), Berlin (19) and Leipzig (20).

According to US sources, Morrissey is in good spirits and is looking forward to performing again, even considering the strain of his lengthy court battles with ex-band members and the departure from his label Mercury.

He recently told a US reported: "I look back upon the Mercury experience as the worst time of my life."

Morrissey now lives in a property in LA which used to be home to author F Scott Fitzgerald, director John Schlesinger and film Bee Gees producer Robert Stigwood.

"I've actually been living in Los Angeles for about two years. The house was built in 1931 by Clark Gable for Carole Lombard," he said.

The Healers, Johnny Marr's solo project, will release their debut album in February 2000, with a possible US tour to follow.

As previously reported on nme.com, Beck engineer Mickey P will produce the record, and Marr will recruit a new band for the project. He is yet to sign a record deal.

Morrissey's next release will be a solo album, the follow-up to 1997's 'Maladjusted', with a retrospective DVD spanning his solo career and his work with The Smiths to come shortly after.

Long-Lost Morrissey Videos Unearthed For DVD
Aug 11, 1999, 11:30 am PT

Morrissey has sent the folks at Reprise on a bit of a musical scavenger hunt to come up with some long- lost videos to include on his upcoming DVD release. With the mission of including all of his videos, Reprise execs have been hard at work tracking down some never- before- seen videos, including "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" and "Hold Onto Your Friends."

The "Seasick" master was found Tuesday (Aug. 10) through people involved in its production in the U.K., while a source says the label is this close to finding the "Hold Onto Your Friends" video. "Seasick" is from the live album, Beethoven Was Deaf and Your Arsenal, while "Hold Onto Your Friends" is from the album Vauxhall and I. When asked what the "Seasick" video entails, our source quipped, "Morrissey singing." Morrissey -- who gave Reprise a long list of clips to unearth -- especially wanted tracked down these two videos for the DVD, which now has the title of ¡Oye Esteban! .

¡Oye Esteban! will likely include 19 videos and, as previously reported here (allstar, July 29), will be released before Christmas at the same time Reprise releases the Smiths DVD titled, The Smiths: The Complete Picture. The Moz is writing the booklet that will go inside ¡Oye Esteban!.

 June 16, 1999 Boz
From Melinda Hsu
Seeing Boz play with John's Children made for an interesting night, I must say. Plenty of surprises. First off was the preponderance of mods. I dunno, I thought the show would be some 70s rock flavored with some rockabilly. John's Children delved into that mushroom-induced, Hobbit-like psychedelic nonsense in some of their songs, but the show was part of a 66-99 mod revival festival. It cost $26 just to get into the door!

Boz said he and Moz talked (a long talk, 7 hours) earlier this week in L.A. Morrissey has completed 12 songs, is in good spirits, feels very creative, and is generally well. Christy got Boz to perform his great Moz impression -- uncanny reproduction of Morrissey's speech patterns and tone though Boz's own accent slips in. Boz will be up in S.F. for three days, then returns to L.A. to fly home (England).

Morrissey Loses Appeal
[May 20 1999 12:20PM]
Morrissey has lost his appeal against a 1996 court ruling ordering him and Johnny Marr to pay the other two members of the band more royalties. Morrissey and Marr had been taken to court by former band-mates Andy Rourke and Michael Joyce who hoped to claim money from the pair.

The rift came about after Joyce and Rourke decided to contest the division of profits from The Smiths. Before they disbanded, Morrissey and Marr received 40% while the other two got 10%.

Now Morrissey and Marr face bills of around £1m in payouts and legal fees, after three Law Lords dismissed the 1996 High Court ruling which stated that the pair had short-changed their former colleagues. At the time, Morrissey was dubbed "devious, truculent and unreliable" by the court.

In an unrelated incident, Andy Rourke’s former wife was involved in a fracas with Manchester United captain Roy Keane on Sunday night. Maxine Rourke met Keane in a bar in Manchester while he was celebrating winning the Premiership, and claimed he assaulted her after she had asked him to buy her a drink. He spent the night in police cells.

Smith's Bassist Bankrupt
[Feb 26 1999 3:23PM]
In a rather sad display of the values of patience former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke has declared himself bankrupt only months after drummer Mike Joyce won £1 million in back royalties. Rourke (who struggled with Heroin addiction while in the band) was unable to benefit from the ruling because he had already accepted an £83,000 out-of-court settlement.

Meanwhile ex-best pal Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr was recently estimated to be worth £2million while lead singer Morrissey's wealth was around £8million. (The 100 Richest Stars In Rock)

 February 25, 1999 Charmed
I was watching television, when this show, Charmed featured, Love Spit Love's version of "How Soon Is Now?". The producers of this show probably used this song, because of its apparent influence of the movie, The Craft, which had used Love Spit Love on their soundtrack and commericals.

Also note that the new movie, Cruel Intentions also feature the same song in their trailer.

 February 25, 1999 Invisibles
The latest issue of the comic book, "The Invisibles" Number 12 (April 1999), published by Vertigo/DC Comics, features a small Morrissey reference, on page 10. The character Mr.Six described himself as "the last of the famous international playboys."

You might also remember that Grant Morrison, the writer, has used Morrissey/Smiths lyrics into his stories. Most notably from his old comic, "Doom Patrol". One of his first published stories, "St. Swithin's Day" is a story about a young man, who takes the train to London (stopping in Euston too!) to assassinate Margaret Thatcher. The whole diary dialogue is very Morrissey-esque.

He's currently the writer of the successful popular superhero comic, "JLA", published by DC Comics.
