"Within days, Joyce was busily rehearsing with The Smiths in preparation for their imminent debut at the Ritz. He was particularly taken with one song, the teasingly-titled 'I Want A Boyfriend For My Birthday'. Unfortunately, the composition was soon dropped from their set and never returned. The old fixation with New York Dolls-influenced material was gradually thrust aside in favour of lyrics whose sexual ambiguity was more subtle and threatening." |
