From Morrissey-solo

Josh sends the bio / press release (Word format) he received for distribution:
---
"This is the best album I've ever done."
    - Morrissey, on You Are The Quarry

You Are the Quarry, the first new solo material in seven years from Morrissey, is to be released May 17th in the UK and May 18th in the US on Sanctuary's revamped imprint, Attack. Recorded in Los Angeles and London, Quarry is an album of extraordinary original songs using keyboards interwoven with crunchy guitars that work to create a lush, musical backdrop.

"There are no links to the past. This is a much brighter sounding album, than much of my previous work. We've turned the page with Quarry. It's a dynamic album and I couldn't be any happier."

"America is Not the World," "I Have Forgiven Jesus" and "The World is Full of Crashing Bores" illustrate that Morrissey's genius and wit haven't waned a bit. On "America", Morrissey personally pleads with the U.S. of A to hold on to its humility and to cease its heavy-handedness but, make no mistake, "America" is not an anti-American song. "I love you/I love you/America/ but you are not the world," Morrissey sings in a melancholy voice while a thunderous guitar strums and a drum beats heavily in the background. "I'm Not Sorry" shows that Morrissey has no regrets. "I'm not sorry for the things I've done" he sings to the sound of a droning guitar and the beat-beat-beat of a drum loop as Morrissey warns "There's a Wildman in my head." Morrissey lets his detractors know that harsh words have helped his career in "You Know I Couldn't Last," "the critics can't break you/they unwittingly make you."

Morrissey is the Quarry
updated 12/01/04

Morrissey fans should start getting excited now for the imminent return of the quiffed one to the musical spotlight with release of his new album, You Are The Quarry, in April.

In typical style, the names of the tunes recorded for the album are as attention grabbing and provocative as the songs themselves, with such titles as America Is Not The World, The Slum Mums, The First Of The Gang To Die and the More You Ignore Me-esque It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small.

Speaking on 6Music, guitarist Alain Whyte said that "it's gonna be a great album. I think the fans will be really really excited. I personally think it's the best Morrissey album to date. It's kind of like a cross between Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I musically - there's real variety there. There are some slow songs, some uptempo ones and a few real tough-sounding tracks."

Also working with Moz on the album were guitarist Boz Boorer, bass player Gary Day, drummer Dean Butterworth and pianist Roger Manning, with Jerry Finn on production duties. The album was been recorded at Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire and Conway Studio in Los Angeles.

Morrissey Digs The Quarry

Nothing divides an office quite like a discussion of Steven Patrick Morrissey, especially if said office is ChartAttack Central. Some of us swear the warbly one hasn't made a good song since parting ways with Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce - a.k.a. The Smiths - while others practically salivate when there's action in the Moz camp. Which means there's drool aplenty since Morrissey's new album has been given a name and some song titles have been leaked to the media.

Mozzer's new record - his first since 1997's Maladjusted - will be out on Sanctuary some time in the upcoming year and will be called You Are The Quarry. Reported song titles include "I Have Forgiven Jesus," "Come Back To Camden" and "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" Awww... sounds like our boy is as full of woe as ever.

About his decision to go with EMI-offshoot Sanctuary, Morrissey said that three major US labels offered deals to him, but not his band.

I guess they - like many others - were hoping that Morrissey would say yes and that, through the magic of music, money or the combination of the two, he would be reunited with guitarist Johnny Marr. Yes, it's a leap of faith, but with other notorious friends-turned-rivals Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson of Suede being spotted having a pint together last week, the time seems right for musical quarrels to cease. It's a new year. Let's give peace a chance.

We'll keep you posted on the release date of You Are The Quarry and other Morrissey-related news.

Return of the Rusholme Ruffian
Published 08 01 04

Morrissey's first album for seven years will be called You Are The Quarry. It'll come out on Attack records in April - the first fruit of the deal he signed last year with Sanctuary.

Moz and his band recorded almost thirty songs at Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire with producer Jerry Finn, and they've now been whittled down to the final set.

Guitarist Alan Whyte told 6 Music a few of the unmistakeably Morrissey-esque titles, which include My Life Is A Series Of People Saying Goodbye, Teenage Dad On His Estate, Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice, I Have Forgiven Jesus and How Can Anybody Know How I Feel.

Alan told 6 Music: "It's gonna be a great album. I think the fans will be really really excited. I personally think it's the best Morrissey album to date. It's kind of like a cross between Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I musically - there's real variety there. There are some slow songs, some uptempo ones and a few real tough-sounding tracks."

MORRISSEY TAKE A BOW!
Published: 09-01-2004-12-06

MORRISSEY's guitarist has revealed more details about the singer's first album in seven years, 'YOU ARE THE QUARRY'.

The record is due for release in April through the Sanctuary record label, on the Attack imprint.

Alan Whyte said: "It's going to be a great album. Think the fans will be really, really excited. I personally think it's the best Morrissey album to date."

Morrisseyand his band have recorded almost 30 songs in Oxfordshire's Hook End Manor with producer Jerry Finn.

Whyte told BBC's 6 Music: "It's kind of like a cross between 'Your Arsenal' and 'Vauxhall & I' musically - there's real variety there. There are some slow songs, some uptempo ones and a few real tough-sounding tracks."

New song titles expected to appear on the album include 'My Life Is A Series Of People Saying Goodbye', 'Teenage Dad On His Estate' and 'Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice'.

As previously reported on NME.COM, other titles include 'I Have Forgiven Jesus', 'Come Back To Camden', 'How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel' and 'I'm Not Sorry'.

Last year Morrissey briefly returned to the UK, where he told Manchester’s City Life magazine about the reason for the length of time since his last album, 1997’s ‘Maladjusted’.

"I honestly didn’t have any decent offers," he said. "For example, three major US labels said ‘We want you, but we don’t want your band’, so I turned them down. Another label said ‘We want to sign you, but we’d like you to make an album with the musicians from Radiohead’, and another label said ‘We’ll sign you if you agree to make an album with Tracey Thorn’. Absolutely bewildering. People don’t know what I’ve been through."
