Morrissey, "¡Oye Esteban!" (Warner Reprise, $24.98 for DVD, $19.98 for video) - Funny how the beautiful moper who used to bemoan the notion of music videos when he fronted the Smiths has made so many of them on his own - and so many featuring him mugging at the camera. How much you'll get out of this depends on how much you appreciate crooning asexual icons done up like glam James Deans. The 19 songs are excellent across the board; the videos get a bit repetitious. Swoon away, fans - it's been hard to see most of these. Some of us, though, may listen with the TV off.

From
Virgin
Viva Morrissey!
At about midnight yesterday
(10/16), Steven Patrick Morrissey
settled down at a table in the
Book Section of the Sunset Virgin
Megastore in Los Angeles and
readied himself for a lengthy
signing session. Morrissey had
agreed to do the in-store
promotion on the eve of his DVD
video compilation, Oye Esteban,
his first release since 1998's My Early Buglary Years. Leaning back in his chair, he took in a
few deep breaths and exhaled through his trademark half-grin,
cameras flashing all the while.
The contrast between
Morrissey's confident rock persona and his soft-spoken, humbled
composure at last night's signing was startling; it seemed as if
the marveled Morrissey was more lost in his fame than reveling in
it.
Nodding with his two points - the tip of his surf-wave Elvis hair
and his jutted chin - Morrissey began to welcome in a slew of
patient fans. One could have mistaken the entourage for a cult -
uniform in their black clothes, sobbing and kissing the hand of
their historically forlorn leader. Emotions ran high at the signing,
with one or two overzealous fans prompting slight activity on the
part of the security force. But in the end, sheer admiration won
over as each enthused fan as they collected themselves and
approached Morrissey in one-by-one fashion. The depression
typified by Morrissey and his earlier band, The Smiths, was
instead replaced with excitement and glee.
With his sexuality-challenging English contemporary, PJ Harvey,
playing a surprise gig at the Viper Room just up the street,
Morrissey proved his ability to transcend - or crush, even -
gender barriers. Men and women alike kissed the pop prince,
make-up lightly applied on the faces of both parties. Morrissey
didn't hesitate to sign body parts both visible (arms, neck) and
covered (back, chest). And though one could have easily cited
the crowd's identical dress, more notable was the uniformity in
emotion at the Megastore - pure ecstasy as one of pop music's
greatest leaders emerged again from the shadows to spend the
evening with his fans.

Morrissey at Virgin and in Your Living Room

He once crooned as the frontman of
The Smiths, but following the end of that '80s Brit rock ensemble, Morrissey broke out on his own with a faithful following. Since 1988's Viva Hate, which debuted at no. 1 on the British charts, the singer has compiled nine solo albums in the US, with My Early Burglary Years being the last release in 1998. Now, advancing with the times, the delivery boy of dark lyrics and unconventional tunes will deliver his first-ever DVD video compilation of his solo work throughout the last 12 years. Titled !Oye Esteban!, the latest music/movie offering by Morrissey is being promoted with a rare appearance by the traditionally out-of-the-spotlight star. Virgin Megastore Sunset will host a Morrissey signing next Monday night (Oct 16) to celebrate the special DVD release. Beginning at midnight, a limited number of loyal fans will have the opportunity to meet and greet the influential and evocative performer. To ensure your face-to-face encounter with Morrissey, preorder !Oye Esteban! this Friday morning (10/13) at 9am. The Sunset store will distribute wristbands to those in line on a first-come, first-serve basis, however lineup will be prohibited before 8am. Like a band-aid to the wounded, Morrissey's cerebral tunes can comfort those brooding in emotional turmoil, or rip off to explore further the pangs of depression, always passionate and provoking. However he does it, the singer has commanded mesmerized audiences and squarely established himself apart from his early success with The Smiths. After a two-year hiatus, it seems the beloved icon is ready to return, and like the lyrics to his hit song, "The more you ignore me, the closer I get," fans are ready as well. - Linda Koffman

Morrissey to Sign Copies of New DVD
Thursday September 14, @07:32PM PDT
I know for a fact that Morrissey will be appearing at a well known video type store in
LA(one where alot of signings take place)where he will sign copies of the pittiful new DVD.
This is not a live performance..only a signing.
Now fans..be sure to ask him why he felt the need to leave off "Ouija Board..", "Certain
People I Know", "Our Frank" and "Sister I'm A Poet". I doubt any of you will have the guts
to do it..but I would love to know his reply to this.
While you're at it..ask when he plans to release a new album(don't fall for that "I don't
have a contract BS). Also ask why he couldn't of released a live video or CD from his
recent tour (since alot of the South American show were recorded on video
professionally).

Morrissey Videos Land On DVD
Edited by Jonathan Cohen / September 7, 2000, 4:00 p.m. EDT
As it did for the Smiths' collected videos in March, Reprise has compiled 19 music videos from the group's former frontman Morrissey for the DVD collection "¡Oye Esteban!," due Oct. 17. The solo career-spanning release features such favorite clips as "November Spawned A Monster," "Suedehead," "Tomorrow," and the never-before-issued video for "Seasick, But Still Docked," which, until it was found by Reprise staffers last summer, had been missing for several years.
"¡Oye Esteban!" also sports seldom-seen videos from Morrissey's more recent recorded output, such as "The Boy Racer," "Dagenham Dave," and "Sunny," previously available as a multimedia track on Reprise's "My Early Burglary Years" compilation. A live version of "Will Never Marry," previously available on the "Live In Dallas" VHS, is also included.
Morrissey, currently without a record label in the U.S. or his native U.K., is said to be living in Los Angeles and working on new material. He mounted a successful tour of North and South America earlier this year, but has not performed live since an April 5 concert in Rio De Janiero.
The artist's last studio album, 1997's "Maladjusted" (Mercury), debuted at No. 61 on The Billboard 200 and featured the single "Alma Matters," which peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
Here is the track listing for the "¡Oye Esteban!" DVD:
- "Everyday Is Like Sunday"
- "Suedehead"
- "Will Never Marry"
- "November Spawned A Monster"
- "Interesting Drug"
- "The Last Of The Famous International Playboys"
- "My Love Life"

- "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful"
- "Glamorous Glue"

Warner/Reprise has readied a new DVD version of the 1992 video collection "The Smiths: The Complete Picture" for an April 4 release. Boasting upgraded sound quality but no extra tracks, the 50-minute release features music videos for five of the late, great U.K. pop act's songs, including "Ask," "Girlfriend In A Coma," and "How Soon Is Now?," which was lensed by student filmmakers in the U.K.
"The Complete Picture" also includes early television footage of the Smiths performing their hit "This Charming Man," and performances of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" and "Sheila Take A Bow," among others, from the U.K. television show "Top Of The Pops."
Derek Jarman's short film "The Queen Is Dead," which encompasses videos for the title track, "Panic," and "There's A Light That Never Goes Out," rounds out "The Complete Picture."
In related news, former Smiths frontman Morrissey just wrapped a U.S. tour March 5 in Los Angeles. Touring without the backing of a record label in the U.S. or his native U.K., the artist continues on this month to South America for dates in Mexico City (March 24); Santiago, Chile (March 28); and Buenos Aires (March 30); before playing four shows throughout Brazil.
Elsewhere, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr's new band, the Healers, will join Oasis for two concerts July 15-16 at Reebok Stadium outside Manchester, U.K.

Long-Lost Morrissey Videos Unearthed For DVD
Aug 11, 1999, 11:30 am PT
Morrissey has sent the folks at Reprise on a bit of a musical scavenger hunt to come up with some long- lost videos to include on his upcoming DVD release. With the mission of including all of his videos, Reprise execs have been hard at work
tracking down some never- before- seen videos, including "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" and "Hold Onto Your Friends."
The "Seasick" master was found Tuesday (Aug. 10) through people involved in its
production in the U.K., while a source says the label is this close to finding the "Hold Onto Your Friends" video. "Seasick" is from the live album, Beethoven Was Deaf and Your Arsenal, while "Hold Onto Your Friends" is from the album Vauxhall and I. When asked what the "Seasick" video entails, our source quipped, "Morrissey singing." Morrissey -- who gave Reprise a long list of clips to unearth -- especially wanted tracked down these two videos for the DVD, which now has the title of ¡Oye Esteban!.
¡Oye Esteban! will likely include 19 videos and, as previously reported here (allstar, July 29), will be released before Christmas at the same time Reprise releases the Smiths DVD titled, The Smiths: The Complete Picture. The Moz is writing the booklet that will go inside ¡Oye Esteban!.

Morrissey Promos Found [Aug 12 1999 5:34PM]
Long-lost, previously unseen videos are now ready for inclusion on Morrissey's forthcoming DVD release. On a mission to compile all of his promos, Morrissey has finally located Seasick, Yet Still Docked and Hold Onto Your Friends.
A total of 19 videos will be featured on Oye Esteban, to be released before Christmas at the same time as the release of Smiths DVD, The Smiths: The Complete Picture.
Morrissey's UK tour begins on November 15 at Nottingham's Rock City. The former Smiths frontman is hoping to bring Mexican Elvis, El Vez on board as support.

MORRISSEY RETURNS
Morrissey is set to return with a major world tour and a three DVD retrospective, two for his solo career and one of The Smiths featuring unseen footage.
According to US website Allstar the former Smiths frontman heads out on tour round Europe including 18 dates in the UK and Ireland although details are not yet available. Nottingham Rock City was to be the first date but a spokesmen there denied that Morrissey was playing.
The site also states that he will play the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 1999 in Coachella, Calif. near Palm Springs on October 9th it also features the Chemical Brothers, Pavement, DJ Shadow, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Rage Against The Machine.
Morrissey's last album of new songs was 1997's 'Maladjusted', followed by a compilation of rarities 'My Early Burglary Years'.

August 29th - More dates/new drummer
Sources close to the band say that we will see a new drummer and a familar face on the bass guitar this tour. New drummer will be Spike Smith (more info. on him as I get it), and Gary Day comes back on bass.
I asked if anyone knew what 'Oye Estaben' means. It's Mexican for 'Hey Steven'. No more new dates have been announced but keep checking back to the tour page!
From
Melinda
The most innocuous thing I thought to ask was, "Why did you change the name of your tour to Oye Estaban!?" He explained that Reprise wanted the tour name to coincide with his dvd release. I clarified, "Oh, I was thinking that perhaps there was some controversy
about naming it 'The Isle of Dogs tour'." He laughed and pooh-poohed that
idea as if it were the silliest notion he'd ever heard.
