    1. What inspired you to write this book and do you consider this to be a follow up from 'Bigmouth' or a seperate project?
"I think I just wanted to write, and I was a big Morrissey fan so I chose to write about him. Bigmouth came out ten years ago when Morrissey was falling from critical favour, but when I started writing the new book he was seen as a total has-been, so both books have this feeling of me springing to Morrissey's defence. Bigmouth was a 6,000-word essay whereas the new book is 100 pages long, so it's a bit more substantial. In the ten years since I wrote Bigmouth I've changed a lot as writer. Bigmouth is written in typical music journo/fanboy style, while in the new one my style has matured a bit. I'm my own man now, and I've realised that I'm in disagreement with the music journalist consensus when it comes to Morrissey - and everything else as well."

    2. Do you think Morrissey is bigger now, than he was when the Smiths Split?
"I suspect he's bigger now. The new album is heading towards worldwide sales of a million, which must make it his biggest hit ever. With The Smiths and in his early solo years he was huge in Britain and a cult in America. With You Are The Quarry he's making inroads in markets where he's never been before. I think he could have become a global megastar in 1988, but he fumbled the ball..."

    MORRISSEY by PAT REID (2004)
Pat Reid's long-awaited book on '80s icon Morrissey is now available. Go to www.morrissey-solo.com/../0653211 for a look at the rather lovely cover.

Pat comments: "It took us so long to finish the book that the unthinkable has happened and Morrissey is fashionable again..."

There will be a launch party for the book at Bristol's Il Bordello on Tuesday 13 July, from 8pm. Admission is free and all are welcome. Pat will be reading from the book, signing copies and playing Smiths/Morrissey music and groovy related sounds (from the New York Dolls to Franz Ferdinand) all night. Special guests to be confirmed. Il Bordello is a bar on a boat on Welsh Back, opposite the Premier Lodge. Further details: www.ilbordello.co.uk

    From Pat Reid, via Morrissey-Solo
    Hi there,

I thought maybe I should belatedly respond to some of the speculation on the site about my forthcoming book.

    1. The launch of the book has now been delayed until the middle of 2002. Sorry...

    2. Although the book is concerned with issues of sexuality, it also contains an extensive examination of Morrissey's work within the context of late-20th century pop culture. There's also a certain amount of stuff concerning my personal relationship - as a fan - with Morrissey and his work.

    3. The book is NOT a dirt-dredging biography. I'm more interested in the themes and issues which have erupted around Morrissey throughout his career. I would definitely describe it as a real fan's book, and I really hope you guys like it.

    4. When the book appears, I'll be doing readings/discussions in Bristol, Liverpool and London in the UK, and hopefully in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto in North America.

    5. If anyone has any queries, or would like to send me relevant material, please email me at ortonesque@hotmail.com

    Have a fab Christmas!

One of pop music's most enigmatic and compelling figures. Morrissey's only claim about his sexuality is that he is celibate. But he is both reviled and revered by various sections of the gay community. Pat Reid delves into the hushed territory of it all.

Outlines was born in 1997, launching with Bessie Smith, David Hockney and Benjamin Britten. The series is now nine titles old, with Quentin Crisp and Ziggy Stardust due for release at the beginning of 2002. Confirmed titles to follow already include the first biography to delve into the hushed sexual territory of Morrissey, and Pedro Almodóvar, a portrayl of the leading Spanish film-maker whose work was manifest with themes of desire, liberation and sexuality. Montgomery Clift and Francis Poulenc will take Outlines on towards the end of 2002.

Outlines has matured into the most impressive series, has received critical acclaim right across the press and continues to lead the way in stylish, serious and intelligent gay biography.
