Image Brings Indie Pop to Comics
BERKELEY, CA -- 08 December, 2005

Scottish indie pop sensations Belle & Sebastian make their first foray into the four-color world in a very different approach to the comics anthology in Image Comics' PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF: A BELLE & SEBASTIAN ANTHOLOGY GN.

Bursting out of Glasgow in 1996, Belle & Sebastian took the U.K. by storm, going from an independent underground sensation to placing an album on the British Top 20 in just two short years. With their infectious brand of indie pop, Belle & Sebastian has become a college radio staple in the United States. Thanks to its bittersweet love songs and fanatically loyal fans, the band has sold over 2 million albums worldwide.

Now, the band's colorful lyrics and gorgeous, full-bodied melodies have provided Image Comics with the inspiration for a new kind of comics anthology. With the full-color, 144-page PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF, a stellar collection of independent comic creators and cartoonists put their own spins on a cross section of Belle and Sebastian's songs, crafting stories inspired by the band's music, drawn from the band's entire catalog.

With an all-out marketing assault, including mailing out to the over 40,000 fans that are on the various official and unofficial newsletters & fan clubs, a strong push over radio, online and in print, plus the band itself talking about the book while promoting their new album, THE LIFE PURSUIT, sales of the book are expected to be stellar.

PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF: A BELLE & SEBASTIAN ANTHOLOGY GN (ISBN: 1-58240-600-6) is tentatively scheduled to be released February 22nd, 2006, the week before THE LIFE PURSUIT is in stores, giving it an extra push through cross-marketing.

I'd like to take a brief time out from the world of Morrissey and ask for your support for a personal community effort to raise funds for the South Asian tsunami disaster still in need. I'm taking donations through the end of January to go towards CAREs Asia Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund in the name of the Morrissey-solo community. If you have already given, please give again! I donated $500 earlier to Oxfam and am donating another $500 for this collection. I'll report at the end how much was collected.

So, I'm an internet junkie, what can I say ? I had disconnected my land-line telephone last Wednesday and I thought that the cable man was going to show up on that Wednesday to hook me up to the internet. As it happened, the next guy wasn't going to be available in my area until this Sunday (12/19), which kind of annoyed me because that would leave me with a few days of a lack of the 'net. Sigh.

I suppose it could be worst,
but I can't believe it's not better.
Okay, so here is the breakdown of cost from before and after:
SPRINT
- $28.95 for standard telephone service
- $0.00 for work internet
- Connects at "56.6k"
- DSL not available via Sprint in my area.
- Note: time-consuming... takes forever to download, sometime randomly disconnect
COMCAST
- $47.95 for internet ($29.95 for the first 3 months)
- $9.95 television
- $3.00 modem rental (can't commit to this yet, but eventually I will buy one for myself)
- Connects at 2-3mbs

I realized that I am paying twice as much as dial-up (which was basically for the telephone service), but there was a time that I was paying an additional $10 a month for dial-up, so technically it would've been more like $40 vs $60.

Plus, the other thing is that I have two computers and we can both be online at the same time, as opposed to what was available previously: one telephone line. Anyway, it should be good, I'm looking forward to a faster internet experience. If you know of a cheaper broadband-type of service that's available without the telephone service (I've read a lot about "naked DSL" lately, which I'm assuming will be cheaper than cablenet), please let me know. I'm only loyal to the lowest rate, because I'm poor.

I recently discovered that my friend's band, Serenaide, is on MySpace.com. You should check it out and listen to their songs on myspace. Now.

I'm very fond of Mimi (the bassist) on there. Looking at their photographs of their recent festival gig, it looked like they're really doing swell.

Oh, in case you were interested, I do have a MySpace.com account (or if you use Friendster).

An afternoon in the country,
Was all that I was after
If I can't see you in the future,
I'll see you in the pasture

Also, it's about time, but I'm getting broadband very soon. I couldn't get my work to pay for it, but I figure I need faster internet anyway.

It is my Christmas gift to myself.

Elastica
You are Elastica. You like to keep yourself busy. You don't crave attention or money. You do what you want and don't care what anyone thinks of you. You're spiky, tough and energetic.

VAMPIRES: THE MASQUERADE (Nov 2004)
I hate these quiz things that everyone likes. I had to take this particular one only because I was trying to get "You are Sleeper", but unfortunately there were only a few results and Elastica seems like a good choice if any.

You know, I've lost my 5th ATM Bank Card. Everytime I lose them, I always tell myself "Never again!!" It's always one thing: I stick my card in the Automatic Teller Machine and then as soon as it spits out money, I'm off running !!

I'm playing this video game called "Vampires: The Masquerade" and there is this woman in the video game that looks just like Louise ! At least, I think it looks like her :)

I hung out with my brother yesterday and we watched Morrissey and The White Stripes videos. I didn't know he liked them at all, I guess he's really growing up.

I bought my first scarf yesterday too. EL tells me it's very "peppery" and then made fun of my hat.

At the video shop today, I ran into two people I knew, but I couldn't remember their names. I'm terrible with names. They looked at what I was renting: The Stepford Wives (2004), Envy, and Lady Death. I told them, "It's free, don't make fun of my choices."

Since joing Hollywood Video's "MVP" program, I've must've rented at least 60 DVDs in the course of two months.

BELLE & SEBASTIAN PIN (Karren & Sandy) (31 Oct 2004), photograph by Matt Zulawski
I hate aol, but for some reason, I really like AIM. I'm sleepercat on there - please send me a message if you want to hang out (or want to play Scrabble online).

I'm going to Scottsdale, Arizona, for a work-related event in January 2005. I was told that the resort there is quite nice and I have my own room. Internet will be provided, so I'm taking my home laptop, and hopefully it'll be good and fun. I think the only real work day is Thursday, I will be assisting in a Power Point presentation. Friday, I think I'm going to do a hot air balloon (it was either that or more golfing or ATV/Hummer in the desert). Not really sure what I'm actually doing in AZ, but hey, it's all paid for, so I might as well show up.

I'm hoping to be around Toronto, Canada, around March 2005-ish. I will be seeing some really, really old friends called Karren & Sandy (can't believe their photograph are online because they're so camera shy!) and Linh, who I met through a Friendship Book (penpal) around 1995. I've met Linh in real-life before in Los Angelese, I still have this old photograph of us being all young and dorky.

Oh, and I haven't scared off Celeste.... yet. (Shadez is Celeste). Sigh, I wish someone else would move up here!

Update: My DVD list is now automatic via Intervocative Software. If you choose to, you can have your DVD list online, so anytime you add something new, the list gets updated. It's a pretty neat software.

Oh, my S*M*A*S*H website is getting quite a bit of activity due to their tour recently.

WHO NEEDS FLU SHOTS WHEN RHINO HAS THE CURE!
DATE: OCTOBER 26, 2004

Highly Anticipated Cure Reissue Campaign Begins With Expanded, Remastered THREE IMAGINARY BOYS December 7

THREE IMAGINARY BOYS (Dec 2004)
LOS ANGELES - Twenty-five years after The Cure began their global pop invasion with their debut disc, THREE IMAGINARY BOYS, Rhino Records gives the album its first-ever U.S. domestic release with a deluxe two-disc edition loaded with previously unreleased tracks. THREE IMAGINARY BOYS will be available December 7 at all retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $18.98.

The album marks the kickoff to Rhino Records' revitalization of The Cure catalog. Each title will receive a sonic upgrade and be released as a deluxe double-disc set featuring the original album on one CD and numerous rarities on the other. In addition, each release will come with a 16-page booklet filled with photos and tour memorabilia from the personal archives of vocalist Robert Smith, as well as a track-by-track commentary and notes by U.K. music scribe Johnny Black.

Cure fans have long clamored for THREE IMAGINARY BOYS, an energetic 1979 U.K. debut which features "10:15 Saturday Night," "Grinding Halt," "Fire In Cairo," and a quirky rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." The band's debut U.S. album, Boys Don't Cry, featured many of the songs on THREE IMAGINARY BOYS along with singles like "Jumping Someone Else's Train" and "Boys Don't Cry." The Rhino reissue offers the original U.K. album with an added previously unreleased instrumental ("The Weedy Burton"), as well as a 20-track bonus disc which includes the additional tracks from Boys Don't Cry, previously unreleased studio and home demo versions, live renditions, and other curiosities. In total the package includes six previously unreleased songs, eight previously unreleased versions of songs, and 17 tracks never before available on CD.

Johnny Black's liner notes, which make use of extensive and exclusive interviews with Robert Smith, provide fascinating insight into the making of this classic album. One interesting story tells how The Cure managed to get the album recorded with virtually no budget: they simply snuck into Morgan Studios at night once the Jam had finished their sessions, and, using the Jam's gear, recorded through the night till dawn.

It's been almost three decades since a 17-year-old Smith formed The Easy Cure in Crawley, England. Despite various lineup changes, The Cure have forged an ongoing career highlighted by an astonishing run of artistic and commercial successes, including chart-topping hit singles, gold and platinum records, countless awards, critical acclaim, and an international fan base that follows the band with religious fervor. They have secured their place in music history by shaping modern rock as we know it today.

CELESTE'S HANDS (Nov 2004)
I think I am having a pretty good birthday (for once!), because of Raul, Celeste, Sara, my sister, and Dave.

Spent Saturday at the Minnesota Art Institute.

Spent Sunday eating Dim Sum.

Will be spending Monday semi-at-home. I have to show up for a 2 hour meeting, but it's my day off!!

Will be having a lunch "date" with Sophia on Tuesday.

There is a Boy that Never Goes Out:
"Ba-ba-bada-ba-ba" goes the backing vocals,
I'm trying hard not to be antisocial.
Truth be told, I'm not entirely hopeful
-The Lucksmiths

Sometime people's priorities are kind of funny. For instance, my brother, who constantly is running low on cash, spent $30 on a cap because "it looked cool".

Or how about Celeste? She brought two crates of records, a record player... and one pair of socks.

Or the worst case of all: me. I sort of bought a house, but I'm going through a midlife crisis, so I also want a superduper fast car and, perhaps, a tank.

Also, I now know three or four Texans, and I think they're all very cool! How come none of them have accents ? Y'know what I mean, sugar?

Ever had a song stuck in your head in a loop that just won't go away? Mine was Information Society's Mirrorshades:
She said "Now you're here, you've got to show and prove,
And do that dance until it don't move.
The phone doesn't work so you won't be calling home."
I had to revisit the Hack album and it is so good. I love all the songs on it, and it's a total departure from their first record, which was basically pop music. I love InfoSoc, I mean they lived in Minneapolis for a time!

Celeste is arriving here on Saturday and I'm so excited about it. I left a voice mail on her cell phone and must've sounded like a complete dork. I had 20 things I wanted to say, but none of them came out in proper complete sentences.

I wanted to say, "We've never talked to each other, so, this is my voice. Hello, how are you? I hope you have a safe drive. Look forward to seeing you."

Instead, this is what I sounded like, "Oh, erm hi, my voice. Drive. See you. White Pizza" (My boss was asking what I wanted for lunch.)

Books EP - Japanese & Australian versions
Wed 28th Jul - 2004

In the spirit of brotherly love towards our Japanese and Australian cousins (and particularly to stop the Japanese getting shafted by imports), we've released special versions of the "Books EP" in these territories.

Both versions will have the "Final Day (Slow)" remix in addition to all the gubbins that accompanied the European and US versions, while the Japanese edition has the extra bonus of "I'm A Cuckoo (Japanese)", which of course is a version where Stuart sings in Japanese. Hence the name...

Both available from your local (so long as you live in Australia or Japan) record store now.

BELLE & SEBASTIAN - BOOKS (US) (29 Jun 2004)
Please note that I am changing my email address, once again. Please start using , although I might change it to another username since "sleeperster" sounds weird. It was a suggestion because 'sleeper' was already taken. I thought about it and I would've either gone with Sleeperchamp or Pajamapants.

Last week, I was supposed to meet my friends to see a comedy troop. I was late. Since I was already in downtown, I decided to walk down Nicollet Avenue to an import record store called Let it Be Records. But along the way, there was some sort of festival happening all summer called "Sommerfest". I ended up watching a Jazz band and then a street performer juggling sharp knives over four people underneath him. He dubbed it, "the Human Table... of Death!"

At the store, I bought two CDs, Belle & Sebastian's "Books" EP and a used Camera Obscura "Underachievers Please Try Harder" CD. B&S's "Your Cover's Blown" is the most amazing song ever. I just could not stop listening to it. The song seems like it's a patchwork of musical genres. I wish radio stations would play this song, but it's not going to happen as the song is six minutes. Too short, if you ask me.

Well, I have been buying cheap software via Ebay lately. I'm not sure that these software are entirely legal, but it's definitely cheaper than retail. I've picked up Photoshop 8 CS and Pocket Quicken for a very reasonable price.

IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER (Nov 1996)

Belle & Sebastian: If You’re Feeling Sinister
Released: November 18 1996
Mark Bennett, 6 Music listener

Late again. It was 2001 before I heard If You’re Feeling Sinister and I’ve been trying to make up for it ever since. Like Superman flying around the world backwards to bring Lois Lane back to life, I’ve been trying to backdate my love for Belle and Sebastian, hopefully eradicating that unfortunate drum ‘n’ bass phase in the process.

Having spent much of the previous decade whinging (to myself, mainly) about British pop’s obsession with the ‘60s, I suppose it was inevitable that I’d be sniffy about B & S’ ‘classic’ pop influences (Dylan, The Byrds, The Smiths, Felt, Bacharach and David). Mix that lot up the wrong way and you’d end up with Gene or worse. But If You’re Feeling Sinister is so winningly wry, delicate, sad and funny that I just couldn’t help but fall in love with it. Hearing it is an instant comfort, like turning off the news and finding out Robin’s Nest is on on the other side. I have cable.

There are no highlights as such It’s just that some tracks (Me and the Major, Like Dylan in the Movies, Fox in the Snow, Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying, The Boy Done Wrong Again) are life-changingly great as opposed to just great (the others).

If only I’d picked up on this back then, it would have made The Lighthouse Family, Suede, Be Here Now and house records seemingly recorded on the waltzers at the fair seem just about bearable.

But no, I had to waste five years destroying my brain with punishing electronic noise records before I’d even allow If You’re Feeling Sinister into the house, didn’t I? Where did that get me? There I was thinking I was Lester Bangs when really I was Jeremy Clarkson with a Wire subscription. Next week: cruisin’ with the Doobie Brothers.

STUART SHAVING JONATHAN DAVID DIRTY DREAM #2
I bought the U.S. version to FANS ONLY, which is horribly distributed by Matador Records. You can't find the DVD in any retail store (since I only live by Best Buy), so I had to place an order online. Also, I know a lot of the videos were especially cheesy, but the audio sometime goes bad. I don't know if this has anything to do with PAL format being converted to NTSC, but you can definitely tell the picture and audio quality isn't that good, at least compared to some other DVDS I own. Still... it is a million times better than VHS.

Enjoy the random screen captures. If you're on the DVD and want a screen capture, please email me .

I'm A Cuckoo competition!!!
2004-01-29

Our friends at smalloranges have created a fabulous new competition/game for "I'm A Cuckoo" which you can play online at www.imacuckoo.com

The first prize is a trip for two to see Belle & Sebastian play in Barcelona on March 13th 2004, and there are 15 randomly chosen second prizes of signed records and various other goodies. The winner of the first prize will be the highest scoring eligible entry for the game and will receive two return flights FROM THE UK to Barcelona, two nights accommodation, tickets for the show and £200 spending money. The competition is running from NOW until 12 noon GMT on Monday March 1st 2004. Even though it is pretty likely that the winner will be from the UK (unless you can get yourself here at your own cost) please don't let that put you off entering the competition as everyone is eligible to win in the random second prize draw. Good luck!!

REGURGITATOR - "Everday Formula" (1997) THE STROKES - "12:51" (2003)

I recently saw the Stroke's "12:51" video, which is loosely based on TRON (1981). TRON is considered by many critics as the first Computer Generated movie. Anyway, seeing as it is influencial as well as the first of its kind, they have inspired music videos, like Australia's Regurgitator to the Strokes. I'm almost certain there are more Tron-based videos, but these are the only two I know of. Special thanks to Sharon Romer. I miss you!

BELLE & SEBASTIAN ON…

WORKING WITH LEGENDARY PRODUCER TREVOR HORN
DRUMMER RICHARD COLBURN: we were ready to do an album, so we had three or four producers in mind. For a fifth, just a giggle, we said, 'Oh, we'll pitch Trevor.' And he was the only one who ended up responding to any of it. He came up to Glasgow to hear us rehearse a few times, just to get a rough idea of what we're all about. I think at first maybe he had a plan in his head to record us one way, and then when he actually met us and he saw the way we work, he probably had a radically change it.

TODD SOLONDZ CUTTING HALF THEIR MUSIC FOR STORYTELLING
VIOLINIST SARAH MARTIN: we actually put a lot of work into it before it turned out a little differently - six minutes of our music in the film. We'd all written quite a lot of instrumentals and songs, and we'd recorded everything, and we played it to Todd and he would pick what he wanted for the film. So I think we sort of felt that we could do things justice by actually finishing them off and releasing it as our own album.

COMPLAINTS THAT TOO MANY BANDMEMBERS WRITE SONGS
SINGER/GUITARIST STUART MURDOCH: I don't really care. I know for a fact that it's been a tremendously positive thing. I'm not in this band for the fans; I'm especially not in the band for the critics or the record company. The band makes a records because we like to do it and we must do it and we're interested in pleasing ourselves. This might sound harsh, but it's true: if we can't develop and try things out and have a bit of fun, then there's no point in doing it.

Belle and Sebastian can be heard courting graying Buggles fans and teenaged lesbians on their new Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Rough Trade).

MOVIE POSTER THE CROWD
There were a lot of people that showed up for the five shorts tonight at the Caprice Theatre. I am pretty sure the theater was at maximum capacity of 250 persons!

I was pleased to see the two poster I put together at the entrance of the old theater, they both turned out really well on poster-print.

Of all the short films, I have to say that "15 Minutes with Uma" is probably the worst of bunch, because it made absolutely no sense at all. It's about some conspiracy that Uma Thurmann is a man (or something like that). I guess, you can't fault the director/writer, as it is his first film.

Other than that, not really much happening here. I have been meaning to work on this website, but I just haven't gotten around to it. You know how it is.

VU'S DVDS (Nov 2003)
I am pretty close to 600 DVDs now. What is sad is these shelves do not hold all of my DVD collection. I keep moving things out to make more room. The next purchase is the Aliens Legacy Boxset, and I have a place for it next to the Scream Boxset.

You'll notice the Cyclone fighter from Robotech: The New Generation, the complete 28 volume of Lone Wolf and Cub (with the retailer's Hardcover), The Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons (who doesn't have a real name, but we think it's Luis Lane), and the giant CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS OVER-SIZED POSTER and Radiohead's OK COMPUTER being covered up by the shelves. I just don't have the bare walls to display them anymore, unfortunately.

I will be out shopping for a step-on stool/ladder-type as the high shelf is pretty hard to reach for me.

Also, I will be on a business trip to Alpharetta, Georgia, next week, I haven't really been prepared for it yet. All I know is I have my laptop to take with me, and I'm very excited about it.

Love On The March
transcribed by vu

Animals comes, banging their drums
Street clears in Summer
Kids running around, having their fun
They're all already drunk

Ba ba da da da...

A religious holiday's begun
Maybe it's because we have no sun

Marching begins, animal sings
Words that are twisted
Meanings of hate, look at their face
Bitter and ready to fight

A religious holiday's begun
Maybe it's because we have no sun

Lost in the crowd, shouting out loud
Drinking my fill of a bottle of gin
I'll do anything to help me forget about you

You're full of it,
You hopelessly flirt with the girl who works in the pub for a night
But at closing time you will be at my door

Tell me what it is I have to do?
I sacrifice everything for you

I was feeling so good and the sun was shining
All I wanted was to get across the street
I made my biggest mistake when I left her
With a yelling match and a broken kettle

I'm sick of this, you're a little kid
I always have to bail you out when you take off
with your drinking mates and their idiot games
If you sing the songs you half deserve to take a beating

Beat me up 'cos I crosssed the march
They said I need to learn a bit of respect
But I am on this side and I follow the team
When I get out of here, somebody's going to get it!

Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving ?

I am getting four Shaw Brothers movie from www.dddhouse.com tomorrow (I have to sign for them). I think they are zone 2 films, but I have an all-zone player, so let's see how that works out...

I also got the coolest gift for my birthday, from Melinda. It is a record box holder of the latest Japanese craze: "Gloomy", which is about a teddy bear that kills their owner.

No, I'm not making that up.

Desperation Made a Fool of Me
transcribed by vu

I'm sick, I've felt this way for sometime now
I'm fed up with the daily grind
I'm trying to find relief
If you feel this way then clap your hands
Every thought this was a backward land?
What is keeping people mean?
A bad scene

Now that I've got my motives straight and I am thinking clearly
I'll sneak up to your window with my senses open wide

I'm tired, on my shoulders weighing heavily
Is a full responsibility for your trouble and your charm
Your betrayal goes around with me
Like the sword in some old tragedy
It is sticking in my back
People laugh

Now that I've got my motives straight and I am thinking clearly
I'll sneak up to your window with my senses open wide
Never really thought it would be like this
I know it's kind of hard, but I'm glad that it is
Oh I'm glad, yeah I'm glad

I have always loved B&S. I wanted to do something fun for myself on my birthday, so I've decided to put this together... Nothing is done, this is a work in progress.

I also bought a notebook computer yesterday (Sony VAIO® V505DX Notebook PCG-V505DX).

I know it's a little expensive, but it's not everyday I turn twenty-nine.
